Have you made them? Are they same ones you made last year? As I contemplated this thought I first realized that every year I begin with the same ones; lose weight and exercise. This year as I had these thoughts I found myself chuckling because they sound so familiar. I began to think about the Society and thought maybe this year I should make some of my resolutions an opportunity to develop programs in our council that will benefit our members. Two that come to mind are a Prison Ministry and Young Adult Conferences (18-30). How can I accomplish these two goals? Since we cannot possibly provide the information and training needed for a prison ministry the next best thing is to find an organization that can do it for us. The diocesan office of San Diego is offering an information and orientation session for Prison/Jail Ministry on Tuesday January 8 th , 2019 There will be two sessions #1 will be from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, and session #2 will be rom 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Both sessions will be in the San Mateo Conference Room at the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 3888 Paduach Drive in San Diego. Both sessions are identical, and it is only necessary to attend one of the sessions. For further information please contact Robert Ehnow, PhD at [email protected] or 858-490-8375. To start a Young Adult conference it will be necessary once again to ask for assistance from others. I have already asked two young adult members of my own conference for assistance with this goal. Both have agreed to help. Our society is in need of young people. If you have a desire to start a Young Adult conference at you parish please let me know and we can work together as we develop a plan and begin the process. What are you resolutions for the New Year? No matter what they are I pray that each of you will be provided with the grace and wisdom to accomplish them. Happy New Year Judy Marquie, President Message from Council Spiritual Director As we begin the new year with the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, we can reflect on how she once again, leads us to Jesus Christ, true God and true man, savior of all. Through her example, we have a model to follow. Her model of faith and trust in God sustains her through life. Following the Epiphany on January 6th where “they saw the child with Mary his mother” we move into many parables. Mary is not always present in these written parables but we know that she was there for him just as she is for us. As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the 13th, we recall that baptism not only purifies us from sin but also gives new birth in the Spirit. “The original sin that taints this world, and all our personal sins are destroyed by the waters of Baptism” (CCC1263). “The one spirit baptizes us into the one body.” (1 Cor 12:13)

SpecialtothediocesesoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica,onJanuary22nd,weobserveadayofprayerforthefullrestorationofthelegalguaranteeoftherighttolifeandofpenanceforviolationstothedignityofthehumanpersoncommittedthroughactsofabortion.Thisconsiderationforthedignityofapersonextendsfromconceptiontonaturaldeath.
Duringourhomevisitswedrawneartothosewhoaresuffering.Whileweofferhumanitarianhelpwithfood,shelterandotherneeds,itisthosewordsofencouragement,thelistening,thesharedprayersandthefrequenthugsandsmiles,whichreturndignitytothosewhooftenfeel,neglectedandlost.
Manyofthosewevisittodayarefacingendoflifeissues.Therearenotspecialministriesforseniorsinallofourparishes,sosomeofourConferencespickuptheroleofservingthisspecialpopulation.Onceagain,wearehopingtorestoredignity.
ForthelifeoftheworldwecontinueourVincentianwork,servingwhereweareable,prayingforallandcomingtoJesusdailyinourheartforwhathemaygiveus.

VoiceofthePoor(VOP)–KenPoggenburgWehaveaFarmBill!ThankyouforyourprayersandadvocacyasweworkedtorepresentthevoicesofthoseweservetoCongress
insupportoftheFarmBill.Recently,TheSocietyhasbeenveryactiveonthenational
level.We’vealreadymentionedourworkontheFarmBill,whichincludedjoiningvoiceswithCatholicCharitiesUSAandtheUnitedStatesConferenceofCatholicBishopsonajointlettertoCongress.PresidentRalphMiddlecampalsosubmittedalettertotheDepartmentofHomelandSecurityopposingachangetosafetynetprograms,referredtoasthePublicCharge.SinceDHSfirstproposedtheregulationchanges,therehavebeensteadydeclinesreportedbymanycharitiesandsocialserviceorganizationsthatservethosewhomostneednutritionandhealthcaresupport.Onceagain,ourpositionreflectedtheviewpointsofotherCatholicorganizationsbutalsoaddedouruniquecontributionsofreportingtheimpactoftheproposedchangesonthoseweserve.Currently,wearealsosupportingcriminaljusticereformlegislationthathaswidespread,bipartisansupportandisafoundationalaspectofrestorativejustice.Vincentiansknowalltoowellthatmanyofthesingleparentfamiliesweservehaveawageearnerinjail,unabletocontributetofamilywellbeing.Wewillcontinuetomonitorfederalissuesthatwarrantourattention.But,withthenewCongressbeingdivided,weanticipatethebulkoftheissuesmaymovetostateandlocallevels.ThatiswhyweareurginglocalCouncilsandConferencestodiscussissuesthatimpactthoseinneedanddevelopwaystogetvoicesofthoseunheardintothepublicarena.WearestartingtolearnofConferencesthatarehelpingneighborsimpactedbyproposedlegislationspeakinfrontofcityandcountydecisionsmakers.WealsoknowofmanyCouncilsthathaveformedVoiceofthePoorcommitteestokeepVincentiansinformedofthesekindsofconcerns.OneimmediateactionyoucantakeistosignupforVoterVoice,theadvocacyemailtoolweusetokeepVincentiansinformedaboutproposedlegislationimpactingourmostvulnerableneighbors.Signupat:
