Cambodia is one of the richest countries for Wildlife especially in the Northern Plains, which

includes Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal and Inundated Grassland around the lake in Kampong

Thom and Siem Reap. Nowadays Wildlife Viewing Trip is also popular for those tourists who

love nature, environment and wildlife. Sam Veasna Center (SVC) is a local NGO which enables

tourists to see the amazing wildlife of the country. SVC is a non-profit organization that

supports conservation and the environment by enhancing livelihoods in communities living

    alongside these important areas.

This is a 5-day Trip to Bengal Florican Grassland, Prey Veng and Tmatbeoy to observe theGlobally Threatened Species of Bengal Florican, Giant and White-shouldered Ibis, White-

winged Duck and other lovely species both resident and wintering species. Our Group is just 5

people 4 tourists from Sweden and Svc Guide, Srun.

Our trip started from Siem Reap to the Florican Grassland of Prohout then we drove to north to

Prey Veng. We spent 4 hours to spot Bengal Florican, Sarus Crane and other species. We

stopped at Beng Mealea for Lunch. We spent some little times for birding along the way to Prey

Veng. Of Course we spotted 3 White-rumped Pygmy Falcons, Sarus Crane with very nice view

as all close to us. We got to Prey Veng village at almost 4 pm so we did not head to the camp,

we just let one of the trucks bring food and stuff there and the clients and I went to the roost of

White-winged Duck which was 9 km from the camp. We sat down in the hide quietly and wait

for the Duck. It came when it was a bit dark and we heard only the calling and when it perch

but we did not see it. Bengt made a good decision to go back home and came back on the

second evening as we did not want to disturb bird we did not use the light to find it or make

any noise when we went out. We got to the camp late till 7:45 pm.

The Second and the third day morning we were staying at Prey Veng spending the time for

Giant Ibis and White-winged Duck. We manage to see Giant Ibis at Roost (4 ibis) with very

nice, loud calling of the day. Then we saw a big feeding flock of Red-breasted Parakeet, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Black-necked Stork and Black-headed

Woodpecker. We spent another evening and the last morning for WWD both at the roost and

feeding pond but none seen as villagers everywhere in the forest and pond to collect thatch and

fishing. When we got back to the car we saw the driver pumping air into the flat tyre as he

could not place a new one. All just help each other to place a new tyre and we could fix it after

    30 minute working.

We left Prey Veng after lunch of the third day as we wanted to get to Tmatbeoy early and on

time for Ibis and Owl. We got to TB at 1: 25 pm and stop along the high way to see WS Ibis as it

was nesting there, one ibis seen then it flew away as the fire and smoke below that. We did not

go the lodge as time was late and many things to do. We stopped at Srey Snoa for Spotted

Wood Owl but we failed then continue to the second expected roost. When we got there Srun

played the tape and Local Guide (Kim Oun) when to the other side to check and find it but

    3/15

failed again. We decided not to play tape anymore and walk to the car to the roost of WS Ibis

we were stuck by the calling of White-bellied Woodpecker. We played tape to attract this but

not really as it was quiet for a while then one male showed with very nice clear view.

Continued to WS Ibis and waited close to roost tree behind a little bush. The Ibis came also late

in the evening as the darkness killed the color. Some photos taken and Nightjar appeared andsoaring around with some calling (Large-tailed and Savanna). We got home late till 7: 00 pm.

We spend the fourth and fifth day morning for Pale-capped Pigeon, Brown Fish and Brown

Wood Owl and Great Slaty Woodpecker. We could find Owls and Woodpecker but with very

poor view as they were shy and far away. We could see the Giant Ibis before we tried to see

Brown Wood Owl as 3 flashed from the feeding pond. We decided to go and see WS Ibis again

as we wanted to good photos and record the calling so we decided to go to the roost early in

the morning. We found 13 Ibises but not really good pictures and record because no hide and

we did not want to disturb it. We drove back to Siem Reap at 12: 00 pm and we stopped at the

nest of WS Ibis again just a quick look. When we got to Koh Ker area we got at the same placewhere we saw WRP Falcon for 30 minutes birding and another place to take photos of WRP

Falcon. We got to Siem Reap International Airport at 4: 20 pm, drop off 3 of them for flight to

Vietnam and took Bengt to Siem Reap and find place to stay as he would go to Thailand on

    next morning by bus.

I would like to extend a very special thanks to all of the participants who help make this tour so

thoroughly enjoyable. My special thanks too, to the Local Guides at Florican Grassland and

Tmatbeoy Bern Chy, Ros Vai and Kim Oun for their good Community and outstanding Bird

Knowledge and finding and, of course, to our driver-Ly and Choam who are very professional

    driver and very kind.
