Smarter Choices in Sutton
Daniel RatchfordLondon Borough of SuttonSutton Partnership Board
21 April 2010
This is not something new…
“Clunk, Click” every trip
…governments have a long history of trying to influence the choices people make
In Sutton we’ve been working with our residents to help them make Smarter Choices
Sutton’s Smarter Choices work has attracted interest from around the world
We have learnt a lot along the way, specifically that successful behaviour change projects need:
“more carrot and less stick”
3-year, £5 million partnership with Transport for London aimed at reducing residents’ car trips
Offering residents information and advice to make their own travel choices
The behaviour change had other benefits including health, personal finances and the environment
75% increase in cycling, 6% reduction in car use and more than 4 out of 5 residents said this was a service they valued
Smarter Travel Sutton is all about helping people make Smarter Choices
We’re helping residents to make Smarter Choices about eating healthy food
94% of local residents were concerned about eating healthily, but only 40% were eating their five a day
“Veggie” the Veg Van makes it easier for people to make Smarter Choices by bringing seasonal, locally grown, fruit and vegetables to them.
Smarter Streets - be part of the team that keeps Sutton clean
Sutton is experiencing an increase in the volume of cigarette rubbish left on our streets
We are introducing an £80 fine for anyone caught discarding litter in a public place
We are encouraging residents to see themselves as a “part of the team that keeps Sutton clean”.
Promoting democracy – young people encouraging their peers to vote
Only 37% of young people voted in the 2005 elections
High impact “guerrilla marketing” tactics were used to promote new behaviours
