CHAPTER 2 Pedal to CrankBALL SIZESMost with loose balls have ten to fifteen 5⁄32" balls per side or 1⁄8" balls. For pedals using cartridge
bearings refer to page X-X to identify replacements.
Italian pedals
and cranks are
now ISO. They
used to be
called Italian
standard which
for all practical
purposes is the
same as ISO
standard.
When retapping pedal threads, start from the back of the crank arm.

Some shoes, such
as certain Time
models, come with
removeable plates
(inserts) to achieve
the various pat-
terns. Shown here
is the Time 4-bolt
sole insert.

PEDALS, CLEATS & SHOES
Shoe DrillingPEDALS, CLEATS & SHOES
Various shoes have provisions
for multiple patterns built into
the sole without the need for
an insert or adapters. In this
example the sole accommodates
three common patterns:
A 3-bolt pattern: Look, SPD-SL,
Campagnolo, Speedplay, etc.
B 2-bolt SPD pattern
C 2-bolt SPD-R pattern
Note: in addition to the hole
pattern, the curvature of cleats
and soles may be considered.
Supplied shims can be added
or deleted with cleats such
as Speedplay to better match
the shape of the sole.

SPD cleat 2-bolt horizontal bolt pattern

There are many cleats, often with subtle
differences, using this bolt pattern, either
from Shimano or other companies. Take
note that these need to be matched to
compatible pedals.

CHAPTER 2Shoe SizesEUROPEAN SHOE SIZESThe shoe sizing systems are different between
the USA, Europe and UK. Furthermore, the
measuring systems, units of measurements and
interpretation of the standards differ even for
individual manufacturers. It is nearly impos-
sible to find an exactly corresponding size in
another system. In many cases the size ranges
overlap. Our chart shows the systems as a series
of size bands which, placed side by side, give a
framework for conversion. Use the chart to focus
the potential match to the one or two best possi-
bilities, thereby reducing the time and expense
of shoe fitting.
A conversion system can get you close, but no
further. To achieve a good fit, there is no substitute
for actually trying on the shoe.
HOW TO USE THE CONVERSION CHARTExamp le 1 John wears an American men’s
size 10 athletic shoe, and a size 9½ dress oxford
with thinner socks. Considering the thin cycling
socks he will wear, the shop looks at the conver-
sion chart, mentally extends a line down from
the boundary between 9 and 10 (the smaller
end of John’s 9½–10 size range) and suggests
he try on a European size 43 first.
Examp le 2 Mary wears an American ladies’
size 7½. Though the chart shows this exactly
above a men’s size 6, corresponding to a Euro-
pean size 39, women’s shoes are often labeled
smaller than the size might indicate relative to
a man’s shoe, so the shop suggests Mary try on
a European size 40 first.
To achieve
a good fit,
there is no
substitute
for actually
trying on
the shoe.
Notes
Each box in the chart represents a size band. USA half-sizes are shown as shaded gray on the right side; European and UK half-sizes (i.e. European 35.5, 36.5; UK 2.5, 3.5, etc.) are not shown to avoid crowding the picture.
Length is defined as heel to toes overall length of the foot. Inches/cm scale is assumed to extend to the left for full measure of foot. Heel to ball length and width are other equally important elements in finding proper shoe fit.
Men’s vs Ladies’: Sometimes elsewhere you may see US ladies’ and men’s sizes listed as 1½ numbers apart for the same actual length, due to differing conventions coming from historical factors. Bear that in mind, as it may be necessary to downsize ladies’ indicated sizes an additional ½ size when reading to the Euro line (i.e. L7 should be read as L6.5, etc. Conversion conventions between US ladies’ and men’s sizes is not exact–another example of the difficulty of translating across systems, and the absolute need to try on shoes.
