SUSTAINABLE EHS FROM ENABLON AND E2

MANAGETECH TO SUPPORT ERGON’S

GROWTH AND REINFORCE ENVIRONMENTAL

COMPLIANCE

From its roots in petroleum-related enterprises beginning in

1954, Ergon now operates as an advanced crude oil processor,

transporter and marketer of refined products. Once a petroleum

distributor with only two employees, it has since evolved into a

worldwide network of market-leading companies employing over

2,600 people. Through acquisitions and merging other company

operations, it now includes ventures in refining, terminaling, asphalt

production and marketing, mid-river operations, exploration,

maintenance support, real estate and more.

Ergon’s subsidiaries operate approximately 60 facilities in 25 US

states, with oil and other Ergon products being distributed globally

from bases in Europe, Asia, South America, Mexico, South Africa and

the United Arab Emirates. High-quality asphalt products, road

maintenance equipment and engineered surface protection coatings

are also manufactured globally including the Czech Republic and

China. Ergon’s real estate segment focuses on the acquisition,

development and brokerage of retail and commercial properties and

industrial facilities across the southeastern United States.

Ergon prioritized requirements for its EHS Management Information System based on priming the company for growth

and acquisition globally. With a focus on better enterprise risk management, Ergon’s objectives comprised:

With a focus on controlled growth, capital discipline and

safe and reliable operations, Ergon saw an opportunity to

gain a competitive edge amongst its industry peers by

standardizing and strengthening its approach to EHS

management. Aware that continuous improvement in

systems was a necessity for operating in a global

economy, Ergon and its partner Experis turned to Enablon

and E2 to provide a standardized system for use across all

its operations.

“We are starting to have discussions that we did not have

before, now that we have the tools to use”, explained

Blaine Totty, EHS Projects Manager at Ergon.

▪ Replace ageing

custom-built software

▪ Provide a configurable,

easy to use and easy to

enhance system

▪ Replace 8 additional

disjointed software

solutions both internal

and external

SYSTEMS TRANSFORMATION COLLABORATION

▪ Remove siloed pockets

of data and deliver

transparency

▪ Reduce duplication of

effort and focus on

informed decision-

making

ACCOUNTABILITY

▪ Drive down

accountability to the

operations where the

data originates

▪ Be able to demonstrate

accountability for EHS

metrics to external

stakeholders

STANDARDISATION

▪ Have one integrated

system to standardize

business processes

across a number of

functions

▪ Take advantage of up

to date industry

standards and best

practice

In addition, Ergon had a very clear strategy for embedding the software. They wanted to focus on EHS business processes

rather than specific statutory requirements to ensure an enterprise-wide deployment. Configuration rather than

customization was key to minimize maintenance and support needs. Finally integration with other systems was key to

efficient data management.

Having looked at several vendors, and speaking to similar client

references, Ergon chose Enablon. Blaine Totty, Ergon’s EHS Project

Manager, highlights why Enablon was selected:

▪ Met business need

▪ Easy and intuitive interface

▪ Flexibility with emission calculations and audit trails

▪ Responsiveness of the Vendor during selection

Enablon partnered with E2, an award-winning environmental and

engineering consulting firm, experienced in complex systems

implementations with EHS compliance components for large

diverse companies. Totty explains his choice: E2 is ‘an experienced,

well-organised and responsive’ partner to work with, and Ergon has

worked with them in a strong partnership across two phases, to-

date, of the total five phase implementation. Ergon chose to

undertake a complex multi-phase project, implementing a wide

range of Enablon applications and modules.

“ E2 was able to make Ergon

staff’s job easier by

integrating their Enablon

solution with two existing

systems that already tracked

reduced the data entry

burden on EHS operational

staff.

– GLENN MAYER, PE, CEO AT

E2 MANAGETECH

Phase 1 delivered Ergon Incident Management, Action Plans and EHS Metrics and Reporting. With that successfully rolled

out, the project teams started to tackle their more complex challenge in Phase 2: Air Quality Management and

Compliance, which included integrating tank emissions modelling into air quality monitoring and reporting across diverse

Ergon businesses.

After the Environmental Protection Agency ended support of the industry standard tool TANKS 4.09, companies

were left to address standard chemical tank calculations on their own. Ergon wanted to incorporate these

calculations into the Air Quality system being delivered in the project. This would involve moving from disparate site-

level spreadsheets to a cohesive, unified enterprise solution.

E2’s team of EMIS and air quality experts assisted Ergon with an all-encompassing design strategy, while at the same

time, looked at an organization-wide inventory of sites with air quality concerns. E2 and Enablon worked together to

enhance the tank emissions module to include calculations for heated tanks, floating roof tank landings and tank

cleanings. This provided a unique and hugely beneficial tool to Ergon for staying compliant with EPA requirements.

Along with optimising the Enablon system for the multiple

calculation types required, E2 examined every data collection and

entry point across sites to understand where the whole process

could be optimized, especially with so many data records to

manage. E2 was able to make Ergon staff’s job easier by integrating

their Enablon solution with two existing systems that already

tracked tank transactions. Tank calculations are done by

aggregation, whereas air quality focuses on throughput, so by using

data aggregation at individual sites, it significantly reduces the data

entry burden on EHS operational staff.

Examining incident data easily across the company is now also

possible for EHS teams. Where information was once in silos, all

events are consolidated in one system but with the ability to report

at company or facility-level to drill down into specific incidents, and

learn from them.

“ Users feel the Enablon

system is intuitive. They are

glad to be able to pull

reports easily from the

system rather than having to

manually generate them.

– BLAINE TOTTY, EHS

PROJECTS MANAGER AT

ERGON

E2’s collaborative approach to the project allowed challenges to be met head-on with innovative solutions, both in Ergon

business processes and in Enablon configuration. The dedication of the project teams meant that both partners took the

time to really understand Ergon’s processes. E2 working closely in an iterative process with Enablon’s product team to

advise on product enhancements that would suit both Ergon and the environmental compliance market was also a success

factor. These improvements have really strengthened the capabilities of Enablon’s air quality management software.
