Forestry and agroforestry services can be grouped into three
categories:
1. Production services: goods and services produced
2. Regulation services: regulation of hydrological and
biochemical cycles, climatic and biological processes
3. Cultural services: benefits obtained through recreation,
cognitive development, relaxation and spiritual reflection
Importance of forestry and agroforestry

Production services: Goods & services generated from wood, non-wood products and services, such as: ü Food: fruits, legumes, trees and agroforestry crops, honey ü Fodder: forage from trees and shrubs or grass grown in
forestry and agroforestry systems ü Fuel (wood and dung), ü Timber, ü Fibres and other raw materials, ü Biochemical and medicinal resources, ü Genetic resources, ü Ornamental trees and shrubs, ü Employment, etc.

Regulation services: ü Carbon sequestration; ü Climate regulation through regulation of albedo, temperature
and rainfall patterns; ü Regulation of the timing and volume of river and ground water
flows; ü Protection against floods by coastal or riparian systems; ü Regulation of erosion and sedimentation; ü Regulation of species reproduction (nursery function); ü Breakdown of excess nutrients and pollution (minerals); ü Plant pollination; ü Regulation of pests and pathogens; ü Protection against storms; ü Protection against noise and dust (air filtration); ü Biological nitrogen fixation (soil fertility improvement).

Cultural services: ü Nature and biodiversity (provision of habitat for wild
plant and animal species); ü Provision of cultural, historical and religious heritage
(e.g. a historical landscape or a sacred forest); ü Provision of scientific and educational information; ü Provision of opportunities for recreation and tourism; ü Provision of attractive landscape features enhancing
housing and living conditions (amenity service i.e. landscape beautification);
ü Provision of other information (e.g. cultural or artistic inspiration).

Agroforestry enhances sustainable forest management
Most common agroforestry practices in Rwanda include: ü Individual trees/shrubs planted in home gardens,
around houses, along paths or roads, and public places;
ü Dispersed trees/shrubs in cropland and pastures; ü Crops in between rows of trees/shrubs (alley cropping); ü Strips of trees/shrubs along contours or waterways
(rivers, dams or lakes); ü Living fences and borderlines/boundaries; ü Shelterbelts/windbreaks/road lines; ü Improved fallows; ü Trees/shrubs to stabilize terraces on hills or earthworks; ü Trees planted to control erosion on hillsides and gullies; ü Woodlots for the production of fuel, timber, etc.;

Agroforestry may contribute to sustainable forest management through two pathways:(a) as sustainable intensification and/or sustainable diversification; (b) as a source of wood and non-timber forest products (Current opinion in Environmental sustainability)

Way forward ü Promotion of agroforestry practices particularly where
there is land shortage
ü Strengthen and enforce adoption and application of forestry standards (all forests (both natural and plantations should have management plans)
ü Strengthen and enforce sustainable forestry policies and legislation
ü Promote private-public partnerships in managing forests (Joint/participatory/co-management
