WHAT NUTRECO IS DOING TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

Through our focus on sustainable innovation

we aspire to be part of the solution. As an

animal nutrition and aqua feed company with

a global presence, we are ideally positioned to

contribute towards the development of more

sustainable food production.

Nuterra, our global sustainability programme,

is designed to live up to our responsibilities

and ambitions.

After all, it’s not just what we aspire to do,

it’s what we do.

Global challengesOn a global scale, the sustainability challenges of food production

are both significant and intensifying. In the coming decades, the

world will need to produce as much as 70% more food to feed a

growing world population, while we are currently already using the

equivalent of 1.5 planets to support our way of life. At the same time,

farmers face ever-greater consumer demands and new challenges

such as the need to reduce the use of antibiotics.

Page 3: Sustainability - Nutreco · animal nutrition and aqua feed company with ... farmers face ever-greater consumer demands and new challenges ... include a project in Nigeria where we

By 2050, the world population will have grown to over

9 billion people. At the same time, increased urbanisation

and income growth are changing dietary preferences and

increasing the demand for animal proteins. MORE FROM LESSWe believe that using resources in increasingly efficient ways is

key to feed a growing world population in a sustainable way.

For example, more resource-efficient farming can help to avoid

new agricultural land being generated through deforestation.

INNOVATION IS FUNDAMENTALOn a global level, the productivity of livestock and aquaculture

species can be as much as 30-40% below its genetic potential. We can

close that gap by integrating the latest technological developments

into practical and innovative nutritional solutions.

MORE EFFICIENT, BUT SUSTAINABLEWe support new farming practices that seek to optimise production,

rather than unidimensional maximisation. For instance, we believe it

is more sustainable to focus on nutrition in the early life stages, as well

as keeping animals healthy and productive through good nutrition

and farm management, rather than through the unwarranted use

of antibiotics.

DIALOGUE AND TRANSPARENCYWithout societal and consumer consent, our innovations might not

be as significant as they could be. We can only create acceptance

if we communicate, if we are open, and if we enter into dialogue

with stakeholders.

NUTERRA ROADMAPOur Nuterra Roadmap sets clear ambitions

regarding people, planet and profit. It is an

aspirational vision designed to align our actions

and initiatives over a period of several years, as we

work to fulfil our mission of ‘Feeding the Future’.

These objectives are aligned with the long-term

goals of our strategy as well as the UN Sustainable

Development Goals. The roadmap is grouped

into four areas: Nutritional Solutions, Ingredients,

Operations and Commitment.

NUTERRA STANDARDOur Nuterra Standard is an internal tool that clearly

outlines the actions needed to realise the Nuterra

Roadmap and enables us to measure and score

progress over time. Our operations undertake

this assessment biannually to ensure that we hold

ourselves accountable in our sustainability

aspirations and targets.

NUTERRA PRODUCT ASSESSMENTThe Nuterra Product Assessment is a tool that helps

us to measure the environmental impacts and

attributes of our nutritional solutions. It uses Life Cycle

Assessment methodology to systematically evaluate

the environmental aspects of using our products

and services.

Important indicators of measured sustainable

nutritional solutions include greenhouse gas emissions,

acidification, eutrophication and energy use.

The Nuterra programmeThe Nuterra Programme sets out Nutreco’s

sustainability strategy and provides the

tools required to implement this throughout

our company. The programme is made up

of three distinct components: the Nuterra

Roadmap; the Nuterra Standard; and the

Nuterra Product Assessment.

Nutritional solutions

LifeStart sets life performance

Environment and nutrition during early life have a

profound and long lasting effect on animal health.

To achieve sustainable growth it is crucial to prepare

an animal’s intestine for efficient feed digestion at

an early stage. Maximising feed intake after weaning

is vital because metabolic systems can be

reprogrammed during this time frame. To close the

gap between genetic potential and performance,

quality nutrition during the first weeks of life is vital.

Investing in LifeStart is about sustainable farming and improving farm financial results.

Through the development of nutritional solutions,

Nutreco can make a significant contribution to

making livestock production and aquaculture more

sustainable. We focus on four innovation areas:

LifeStart, animal health & welfare, feed efficiency,

and models & services.

In parallel with nutrition, farm management is

of significant importance to achieve sustainable

growth. Cleaning and disinfection, water and

climate control, housing and stock density, as well

as data management are basic parameters that

should be monitored and controlled properly.

LifeStart brings together world-class expertise on

young animal health and nutrition with practical

farm management experience, to find

sustainable ways of improving productivity.

Securing animal health

Many aquaculture systems are open to the natural

environment, which exposes fish and shrimp stocks to

stresses such as extreme temperatures, handling and

a range of parasites and diseases that can lead to

negative health impacts. We are committed to

helping farmers secure animal health through

continued investment in R&D, which helps to improve

the sustainability of production by maintaining a high

level of animal welfare as well as increasing the

efficiency of production.

The result from more than 20 years of research,

our Protec products help protect the skin, intestine

and gills of aquaculture species. They support

immune systems, add the building blocks for

new cells and increase the level of antioxidants.

Documented evidence shows Protec enables species

to better cope with the challenge of being exposed

to viruses, parasites and pathogenic bacteria.

Feeding animals more efficiently

It’s all about achieving more with fewer resources.

Feed costs account for as much as 70% in livestock

production. With raw material prices and quality

being both changeable and unpredictable, every

feed-related decision can have a significant impact

on animal performance as well as profitability.

Our modular precision-feeding systems offer the latest

nutritional science data and technology. With these

models our customers can fine-tune their feeding

strategies according to accurate nutritional data and

current market prices. Precision feeding also helps to

produce more edible protein with fewer resources

by reducing the amount of waste.

In addition, we offer a broad range of science-

based tools and services, such as near-infrared (NIR)

spectrometry of animal feed ingredients. This

technology gives results within minutes, compared

to traditional analyses that can take several days.

This enables timely decisions to be made resulting in

optimal feed efficiency.

Health diets strengthen immune systems of aquaculture species.

Feed costs account for as much as 70% in livestock production.

SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS

Cooperation between value chain partners

(business, government, science and NGOs)

is a prerequisite to successfully address the

sustainability challenges of our industry.

Nutreco participates in various sustainable

partnerships such as the Round Table on

Responsible Soy, The ProTerra Network,

the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil,

the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and

the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil

Responsible Supply Standard.

Our nutritional solutions include a wide variety of

ingredients sourced from all over the world. We

can only develop sustainable nutritional solutions

if we are part of a responsible supply chain.

Sustainable sourcing

Our Supplier Code of Conduct enables us to engage with our suppliers on

material issues relating to their operations and to set minimum criteria relating

to environmental, social and legal aspects.

Based on spend, over 90% of our suppliers have signed-off on their agreement

to comply with the Code, and it is mandatory for all new suppliers to sign.

Supplier sustainability audits are performed, with an extra focus on countries

and ingredients that have been identified as ‘high risk’.

OperationsENERGYWe make smarter decisions about using newer,

more energy efficient equipment and processes in

our factories.

CO2 EMISSIONS We continuously investigate options to change our

energy sources to more sustainable options.

WASTE We aim to reduce the amount of waste going to

landfill by recycling and reusing as much as

possible. We also focus on reducing the amount

of products we purchase that cannot be reused

or recycled.

WATER We lower withdrawals from local water sources by

increasing productivity per water input, reducing

wastewater discharges and their pollutant load, and

reducing thermal energy consumption.

HEALTH AND SAFETYWe monitor our health and safety performance by

registering work accidents and by continuously

improving the safety of our work environment.

Under the Nuterra Programme, we focus on the

monitoring and recording of five sustainability

KPIs. For each of these we set targets and

discuss results quarterly, so that we actively

work towards meeting these targets.

AQUAVISION AND AGRIVISION

Nutreco hosts two biennial conferences, AgriVision

and AquaVision, which provide a platform to discuss

global feed, food and business related topics. The

aim of bringing together key stakeholders from the

international feed-to-food chain is to facilitate strategic

debate, develop new ideas and inspire innovative

approaches for the future.

COMMUNITIES DEVELOPMENTMany farmers in developing markets are smallholders,

using basic agriculture and aquaculture methods.

An important challenge in feeding a growing

world population in a sustainable way is to

improve the productivity and sustainability of their

farming methods.

In local community development programmes,

we team up with local governments, NGOs,

universities and other companies to share our

knowledge and expertise. Current programmes

include a project in Nigeria where we are helping

to raise the livelihoods of up to 1,000 small catfish

farmers and a project in Indonesia involving up to

1,000 small dairy farmers.

CommitmentWe can only progress if we communicate to and

enter into dialogues with all our stakeholders –

not only customers, suppliers and employees,

but with society in general.
