Good afternoon, and welcome toWalton Lane for today’s SouthernCombination Football League, Division Twofixture against Westfield. We extend a warm welcome to the visitingplayers, officials and supporters fromWestfield who have made their longestjourney of the season from the Hastingsarea, in addition to match referee – MartinSmith, from Bognor Regis. The games are starting to come thick-and-fast for us now following a disruptivewinter – today’s falls in the middle of amin-run that will see us play six times inthe space of two weeks.Ten league matches to go in all – with aDivision 2 cup semi-final also to come – willcertainly test the physical reserves of thesquad. We then head to Clymping on Tuesdaynight, and Rustington on Thursday (both6.15pm), before another game on Saturday(16th), which we await confirmation of atthe time of going to print.Ironically it was our forthcoming cupopponents – Montpelier Villa – who wefaced on Saturday – a 5-4 victory with a lastminute winner from evergreen assistantboss, Neil Redman – having lead 4-0 earlyin the second half! That set us up nicely for Tuesday evening’s‘home’ fixture against AFC Varndeanianswhich was re-arranged at Bognor RegisTown’s Nyewood Lane ground in order forus help clear another game from our busyend-of-season schedule. Our performance and work rate over theninety minutes warranted something fromthe game, however a very competitive
Varndeanians side were clinical in theirfinishing, and that was the difference asthey ran out 1-3 winners. While we have games in hand, we need tostart making them count – starting todayagainst Westfield, who gave us our firsttaste of defeat in the reverse fixture at theParish Field back in August. That was an afternoon to forget, as wewere caught out by the traffic and startedthe game fifteen minutes late with EIGHTplayers! Admittedly not our finest hour, butto only lose 2-1 and hit the woodwork -which would have levelled - gave us somecause for optimism. They come into today’s game fresh withouta midweek fixture, and on the back of a 3-3home draw with Alfold last weekend.Westfeld also held league leaders Cowfoldto a 1-1 draw in March. Our reserves went down to a 2-1 defeat atFerring last week – with player/ manager,Danny Mullen and Toby Wallis bothreceiving their marching orders. After the game, Danny announced he wouldbe retiring from playing after a 20 yearcareer, to focus solely on coaching thereserves.Having been thrown in at the deep end atthe start of the season and creating a squadvirtually from scratch, Danny – who gainedhis Level 2 coaching badge last year - hasdeveloped a stable and competitive sidewho play a vital role in supporting the firstteam, and nurturing younger playerscoming in from the under 18’s, too. They play their penultimate game atMidhurst & Easebourne this afternoon(4.30pm k.o).Today is also the Grand National, which willbe shown live in the clubhouse after thegame (race gets under way at 5.15pm).Do get involved with our sweepstake in thebar, and check out our fun infographic inthis programme with some interesting ideason how to pick the winner!Enjoy the game and thank you for yoursupport!

By Alan PriceBosham played host to AFC Vardeanians atthe beautiful setting of Nyewood Lane –the home of Bognor Regis Town onTuesday night in a much anticipatedfixture in Division Two of the SCFL.The visitors took the lead after only threeminutes when Jack Langford got to theball first to poke home passed thestranded keeper, Kieran Magee.Bosham soon settled and came at theyellows with full throttle and the likes ofDave Storey, Alex Barnes and MarcoGiambelardini all had good chances toscore but couldn’t find the finish whenrequired. Thankfully Bosham were gifted
an equaliser right on half time when EllisHull diverted a Graeme Dowdencorner into his own net to see the side gointo the break all square once more.Bosham came out looking to continue themomentum they had gained but withinten minutes were behind again whenAhmed Shaker burst through on goal andshot low into the corner of the net.Bosham, at times, were found wanting atthe back, such was the searing pace offorward pair Shaker and Tariq Richards -and they held out until the seventiethminute when Langford grabbed his secondof the game to all but seal the points forthe visitors.Bosham tried everything to find a wayback into the match - and there was somelovely football to watch - but the quality inthe final third was lacking. As it was, Vardeanians were able to holdfirm and come away from Bognor withthree points in the pocket.Bosham: Magee, Bulbeck, Bryant, Fewell, Bell,Docherty, Wilson, Giambelardini, Storey, Barnes,Dowden. Subs: Ruston, Lafferty, Desi.
