It’s been a busy time since I last had a chance to contact; a period highlighted by the release of the Abbott Government’s Federal Budget in May. THE FARRER FLIER

Hello everyone and welcome to our latest and slightly ‘new look’ Farrer Flier.

It’s been a busy time since I last had a chance to contact; a period highlighted by the release of the Abbott Government’s Federal Budget in May.

As I mentioned at the time, budgets are always a financial balancing act but this document is both measured and fair, with a clear aim to build a stronger economy across the country. It’s a very good budget for regional areas like Farrer.

All the latest news and events to impact Farrer is inside, along with some of the ways our policy plans may affect you.

As always, if you are after assistance, advice, or have any questions that need answering, feel free to contact me at any time.

Best Wishes.

Heritage NowI was delighted to recently announce discretionary funding of $121,000 to ensure Broken Hill’s historic Headframe No 4 site remains an iconic symbol of Australia’s first National Heritage Listed City.

After contacting Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, who visited the area in January to announce the ‘listing’, he accepted the need to address an immediate threat to the integrity of the headframe, along with the safety of the public and mine personnel.

The century-old frame was on its last legs so it’s great we are finally getting work underway which will kick off the first stage of securing the historic structure located at Rasp Mine in the centre of the city. For details of the Government’s Protecting National Historic Sites program … www.environment.gov.au/heritage/grants-and-funding/national-historic-sites

Skilling StudentsSecondary Students in Broken Hill and the Far West have the chance to learn vocational skills as part of the Reaching Across Secondary Program Trade Training Centres.

The base Centre, located at Broken Hill High School, gives our students the chance to earn qualifications in areas such as construction, engineering and hospitality. The centre was refurbished as part of a $5 million contribution from the Australian Government, resulting in a revamped metals/engineering workshop, upgrade to the kitchen facilities and newly installed video conferencing and smart-board facilities.

Skills training through secondary school, allows students to pursue further training after school or to enter the workplace. For many, learning a trade like these can be the key to a real job across a wide range of industries.

Basin BoostIn late May, our Government delivered on its commitment to Murray-Darling Basin communities, by introducing legislation for a 1500 gigalitre cap on water purchases with the Basin Plan.

This cap was a pre-election promise by the Coalition as part of our focus to ensure the Plan is delivered with the so-called triple bottom line; that social, economic and environmental impacts are weighted equally.

This Government is making infrastructure investment its primary method for recovering water to improve the Basin environment. We’re also seeking greater flexibility to include off-farm projects as ‘efficiency measures’ under the Water for the Environment Special Account. This will increase access to funds to improve irrigation delivery networks.

The legislation, which is yet to pass the Parliament, provides an opportunity for the Federal Opposition to work with us and ensure win-win outcomes for Basin communities and the environment.

Now the Abbott Government’s new Work for the Dole programme is underway, can I again encourage local not-for-profit organisations, charity, community and sporting groups, councils or state government agencies to identify and register activities or projects for participants.

Work for the Dole is part of a new $5 billion jobactive employment service, with possible activities ranging from office administration and customer service, warehouse duties through to outdoor tasks such as landscaping and repairs. It really depends on the needs of your organisation.

Unemployment numbers are a little above the national average in our area and this proactive program is a key element in the government’s efforts to help people get back into work.

If you would like to offer a Work for the Dole placement or want to find out more, please feel free to contact my electorate office for all the details.

Cyber SkillsA government initiative I really want to spread the word on is Broadband for Seniors.

Under this program, local seniors across Farrer continue to have free access to computers and internet training, ensuring everyone can keep up in the digital age.

As well as developing on-line skills, the training is supportive and a relaxed way to learn or brush up on email, cyber safety and social media to stay in touch with friends and family.

Coming soon, we will also have online tutorials to help you get comfortable with internet banking. 28 Broadband for Seniors kiosks are in Farrer, with details on 1300 795 897, www.bfseniors.com.au or give my office a call and we will be happy to assist.

The Coalition’s Green Army is assembling across the country, with plenty of opportunities for communities in Farrer to benefit.

Nationally, we’ve exceeded a target of 250 projects in the first year of the program – with an ambitious 1500 Green Army teams planned over the next three years.

Green Army units of 10 (up to nine participants and one team supervisor) are deployed on projects lasting 20-26 weeks to help communities deliver local conservation outcomes. Projects are guided by local community needs

Since my last newsletter, there has been significant progress by NBN in rolling out fast broadband options across Farrer.

Fixed wireless towers are emerging at more than 30 locations servicing the electorate and the latest rollout schedule for fixed line services (also known as fibre-to-the-node or FTTN) has also been announced. This includes supplying over 15,000 Farrer homes and businesses. Our government knows rural areas need this technology just as much as major centres, and we’re delivering this infrastructure as fast as

Locally, the most recent venture given the go ahead is to the Sunset Strip Progress Association near Lake Menindee, for works to enhance and revegetate areas near the town and help protect threatened animal species.I believe they’re still on the lookout for participants - usually you’ll be aged between 17-24 years and have left school, are a gap year student, graduate or job seeker.

possible, but only making assurances which can actually be achieved.

Monthly updates on the rollout progress are available via www.nbnco.com.au/rolloutplan

Meanwhile, new NBN satellites will be launched in September offering fast broadband options for the more remote parts of our electorate during the first half of next year.

Capital Idea

Works on new boarding facilities at St Paul’s College, Walla Walla are nearing completion, after the school received a $650,000 Australian Government grant.

Awarded as part of our Capital Grants Programme (CGP), funding was provided to help construct additional girls boarding facilities after exceptional growth in student numbers, particularly boarders, saw demand double in just a few short years.

CGP provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure where they otherwise may not have access to sufficient resources.

The new facility is due to be officially opened at the end of this month

$5b for BusinessAustralia’s small businesses have been delivered surety to make the most of our Government’s Jobs and Small Business package, with key measures passing through the Parliament last month.

All small businesses can immediately deduct every asset costing less than $20,000 purchased since Budget night and can continue to do so until the end of June 2017.Small companies with a turnover of less than $2 million also receive a 1.5% tax cut, which will mean we have delivered the lowest tax rate to small business since 1967.

The $5.5 billion Jobs and Small Business package is the biggest small business package in our nation’s history.

Healthy ChoicesAs Minister for Health in the Abbott Government, it’s invigorating to be able to oversee a number of key developments benefitting regional Australia including our electorate.

One of them, the GP Rural Incentives Program, enables hundreds of smaller communities to receive greater incentives to attract doctors. Changes from this month redirects money to towns which have had genuine difficulty in attracting and retaining GP’s, meaning a better opportunity to gain the services we need and deserve.

Plans to revise the Specialist Training Programme will also look at ways we can attract more medical specialists to regional and rural areas; something governments have found notoriously difficult to do for a long time.

And when you can’t make it to town, we have also provided additional funding to the Royal

Flying Doctors Service over the next two years to deliver emergency and primary health care.

We are also reforming the way primary care services are delivered though new Primary Health Networks, making mental and indigenous health among their key priorities.

I value your feedback on all issues. To contact me directly, email [email protected]

Sporting SchoolsDid you know research indicates around three quarters of primary school children now spend most spare time watching television; just one third have the recommended hour of physical activity a day and only half are involved in a sport activity.

With my Minister for Sport cap on, I would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to the 2000+ primary schools across the nation which have taken up the first round of the Abbott Government’s $100 million Sporting Schools program.

Targeting our children’s health by getting them involved in physical activity, Sporting Schools is one of our key preventative health measures aimed at healthy opportunities for children before, during and after school hours. This year’s round of the program will enable these schools, including 45 located in Farrer, to deliver sports-based activities during Term 3 and 4 this year.
