Susquehanna Township School District

Team Member Training & Engagement Plan 2017-2018

Even the wisest mind has something yet to learn. –George Santayana

Beliefs and Rationale

Vision

World class. Every day. In every way.

Mission

The success of every learner

Core Values

Every learner has the right to a world class education.

We will be a leader in innovation and technology.

The learning environment must be safe and supportive.

Our diversity is our strength.

Community partnerships are vital to our success.

We will act ethically at all levels of the organization.

Rationale

According to a Dale Carnegie Institute study (2012), employee retention increases when employees are

engaged, a factor that can dramatically impact organizational improvement. The Susquehanna Township

School District is committed to providing a world class education that will ensure that every student has

the opportunity to pursue their First Choice for college or career after graduation. Thus, we believe that in

order for teachers and staff to effectively serve our students and their families, it is imperative that team

members are engaged through consistent, appropriate and job-embedded training and professional

development across all levels of the district.

Our philosophy is grounded in the belief that building team member capacity through personalized

learning opportunities will result in improved programming, processes, learning experiences and

performance outcomes for students. This year, the district will provide extensive training on the process

for analyzing multiple sources of data (e.g., achievement, attendance, discipline, etc.) to inform instruction

and improve student outcomes.

Early dismissal days will focus on how to access student data, triangulating student data, conducting data

dialogues with students, and providing targeted instruction and assessments based upon data.

Additionally, we believe that a world class organization requires an emphasis on providing excellent

customer service. Therefore, we will offer a learning strand that focuses specifically on improving district

communications and customer support at all levels.

Comprehensive Literacy Plan (CLP)

The integration of literacy across the curriculum requires a consistent, aligned and collaborative approach

to instruction requiring systematic and explicit planning. The local comprehensive literacy plan was

developed by a cross-functional team representing staff, parents and community partners; and embodies

demonstrates the district’s commitment to providing a solid literacy foundation for all students within our

community, birth to grade 12. Participants will receive an overview of the plan and learn how the plan

will support and guide district efforts to become world class in literacy instruction.

Culturally Responsive PBIS

CRPBIS is s a project designed to support culturally responsive approaches to managing Positive Behavior

Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Disproportionality represents one of the most significant problems in

education today (Gregory, Skiba, & Noguera, 2010; U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2013). The

results of decades of research consistently show that students of color, particularly African American

students (and even more so for those with disabilities), are at significantly increased risk for exposure to

exclusionary discipline practices, including office discipline referrals and suspensions (e.g., Fabelo et al.,

2011; Losen & Gillespie, 2012; Shaw & Braden, 1990). School-wide PBIS is particularly relevant to

addressing the challenge of disproportionality (McIntosh et. al, 2014).

H.E.A.T. (K-12)

14 *Topics are subject to change as the district continues to review various sources of data and manage by fact.

Rev. 08/17

H.E.A.T. represents the amount of 21st Century Skills applied by students within any learning

environment. H.E.A.T. is an informal observation rubric used to evaluate the level of engagement within a

lesson. While technology plays a large role in the H.E.A.T. framework, it is important to remember that

the use of technology does not always equal high levels of learning, and therefore, the H.E.A.T. rubric

places equal focus on higher order thinking (H), engaged learning (E) making authentic connections (A)

and (T) technology integration. Participants will learn how the framework can be used to support and

enhance instructional practices.

Supporting English Language Learners

English language learners (ELLs) are a highly heterogeneous and complex group of students, with diverse

gifts, educational needs, backgrounds, languages, and goals. Some ELLs come from homes in which no

English is spoken, while some come from homes where only English is spoken; others have been exposed

to or use multiple languages. Some may be high achievers in school while others struggle. Students may

excel in one content area and need lots of support in another. Participants will learn to provide rigorous

instruction for all ELLs utilizing a strengths-based approach.

Diversity and Inclusion in Instruction

customer relationships that are strong and ‘sticky’. This course provides learner with practical tactics that

help build customer relationships.

Conflict Resolution

15 *Topics are subject to change as the district continues to review various sources of data and manage by fact.

Rev. 08/17

Conflict is a normal, and even healthy, part of relationships. After all, two people can’t be expected to

agree on everything at all times. Since relationship conflicts are inevitable, learning to deal with them in

a healthy way is crucial. When conflict is mismanaged, it can harm the relationship. But when handled in

a respectful and positive way, conflict provides an opportunity for growth, ultimately

strengthening the bond between two people. The purpose of this training is to help develop the skills

needed for successful conflict resolution.
