DID YOU KNOW? ………..in & around Brechin On

The radar system Sir Robert Watson-Watt pioneered was described as

Britain's "secret weapon" in the war, and was credited with winning the Battle of

Britain.

The Dalhousie Estates have been in the ownership of the Earls of Dalhousie for almost 250 years

and at one time extended to around 150,000 acres in the

Counties of Angus and Midlothian.

The Brown and White Caterthuns on the fringe of the Angus Glens are home to two Iron Age hill forts

that date from c550BC to 200AD

Brechin Castle stands proud on a massive bluff of rocks

above the River Southesk on the site of a much older fortress belonging to the

Scottish kings.

During the 1937– 1938 season Brechin City Football Club were

beaten 10–0 by three different clubs

(Cowdenbeath, Albion Rovers

and Airdrieonians)

The Dalhousie Arch which marks the entrance to Edzell was erected to commemorate the 13th Earl of Dalhousie and

his countess

Ian (Pink) Campbell holds the record for

all time goals at Brechin City Football

Club (131)

Born and raised in Brechin and later studying in Dundee, Watson-Watt was a descendent of James Watt, the inventor who improved

the steam engine

Brechin is well known for its cathedral, with eleventh

century round tower, one of only two of these Irish-style

monuments surviving in Scotland (the other is

at Abernethy, Perthshire). The tower was originally free-

standing, but is now attached to Brechin cathedral.

Alexander Davidson and his wife Margaret emigrated to Wisconsin, USA

from the smiddy cottage at Aberlemno in 1857. Their son William,

had three sons, Arthur, Walter and William who, along with Englishman

Bill Harley, founded the iconic Harley-Davidson® motorcycle

The present Brechin Castle was last reconstructed in the early

1700′s and incorporates parts of the original Castle dating back

to the 13th century.

The so called Battle Stone that stands in Aberlemno churchyard is one of the finest examples of the carved symbol

stones of the Picts, which are considered to be amongst the greatest artworks of Dark Age European culture.

Aberlemno has three large carved pictish stones (and one fragment),

dating from the 7th and 8th centuries AD

Brechin is home to the

Glencadam distillery, the

only remaining whisky

distillery in Angus

BRAVO Brechin is an events groups run entirely by volunteers and is

responsible for organising five ‘…in the City’ events each year attracting

visitors from around the globe.

In 2008 the Davidson Legacy began a four-year labour of love to

restore the smiddy cottage from a

crumbling ruin to how it would have looked at

the time Sandy and Margaret left in 1858. The Davidson Cottage

is now a pilgrimage site for Harley-

Davidson® enthusiasts from around the world.

There are more

homes with swimming

pools in Brechin than

in any of the other

Angus towns.

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) identifies small area concentrations of multiple

deprivation across all of Scotland, in ‘datazones’ (areas with populations between 500-1000). This

is measured by considering several different types of deprivation (see the list above). In an area like

Angus, with small towns and rural areas, poverty and deprivation is likely to be more dispersed

than in urban areas and therefore less likely to be highlighted in SIMD.

Not everyone in an area of multiple deprivation is deprived, just as not every deprived person in

Angus lives in an area identified by SIMD.
