W
elcome to the 2nd Edition of Silicon
Indias Top 100 Engineering Colleges,
2011. This year apart from Engineering
Colleges, we are also covering M.Tech
Colleges. It is evident that IITs, NITs
and few other premier engineering colleges alone cannot
churn out enough engineers to meet this need and it is here
the other engineering colleges, private and public, play their
role. But with new technology institutes mushrooming in
every nook and corner of the country, a dilemma about the
quality of education arises for both IT organizations who
are looking for good engineers and students who want to
pursue a career in this industry.
We at SiliconIndia, with our 15 years of media expertise
and expose to IT and related technology space, understand
that despite the infrastructure, faculty, fee structure and
other criteria, the sole parameter of judging a college's qual-
ity is the performance of its graduates in the industry, which
in turn can be measured by the pay package commanded
by them. Thus, this list is entirely based on a single param-
eter - CTC of a graduate. after five years of work experi-
ence
Methodology:To rank the best engineering colleges, a perceptual study
was conducted among HR managers, Recruitment firms
and job boards. The companies/institutes were chosen care-
fully to ensure that the HR managers/professionals inter-
viewed were involved with recruitment and had a fair idea
about the market. Over 3000 engineers who Graduated in
the year 2005 and did not pursue any other course/program
a rewards were interviewed across the six metros-Delhi,
Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
After an exhaustive research and analysis, we finally came
up with a list of top 100 engineering institutes (govt/pri-
vate) in three streams - Computer Science, Electronics and
Communication and Mechanical Engineering. Apart from
this we also formed a list top 10 institutes across India in

The Sma rt Techie |18|J u l y 2 0 1 1
After the Mackinsey report
had expressed serious con-
cerns that only 20% of stu-
dents coming out of higher educational
institutions are employable most of the
employers & members of HR frater-
nity have been expressing grave
doubts, regarding the efficacy of our
educational system.
By and large, the industry has been
able to get the required numbers at the
entry level albeit with some compro-
mises. Surprisingly most of this so
called unemployable lot of students
have demonstrated the capability lev-
els expected of them upon selection &
training and ultimately settled down
into successful careers. Many of the
students at the bottom of the ladder,
through structured learning or due to
hands on learning and growth at the
work place, a few years down the line,
have entered into reputed multinational
companies.
It means that many employ-
ers while hiring entry level talent are
looking for developed students with
Work Place Competencies-(Knowl-
edge, Skills-Technical & Soft-,Win-
ning Attitudes & correct enablers e.g.
balanced & whole some personality,
emotional maturity, confidence, pas-
sion for achievements etc.). Obviously
a young qualified student coming out
of a professional college does not pos-
sess these workplace competencies
quite as adequately, as the prospective
employer would wish to have & so the
employer feels the student is not em-
ployable, however, through the process
of getting experientally exposed to the
working on the job the students acquire
and develop the competencies & skills
and succeed. Thus this competency &
skills development is the consequence
of rigorous experiential exposure, &
work and the majority of profession-
ally qualified freshers are able to
successfully acquire it. It is also obvi-
ous that not all educational institutions
are able to simulate similar conditions
for the students during the process of
acquisition of the degree or diploma.
This does not, however, mean that all
the students are not having the poten-
tial to be gainfully employed, as the
word unemployable has been pro-
jected to mean; all it means is that the
correct exposure & development has
not been provided. Of course the stu-
dents should possess the correct mix of
resources that can be converted into
correct work place competency profile
after the due process of training, learn-
ing and development.
Thus it is the potential that
has to be spotted by recruiters while
hiring at the entry level (read freshers)
and recruiters have to be prepared to
invest in them through learning & de-
velopment interventions, rather than
being vocally concerned that adequate
talent is not available. In my opinion,
the 20%, so called employable cate-
gory of students (as per Mackinsey
studies) are those ones whose re-
source development has already hap-
pened to a better or larger extent,
because of either their own extra re-
sourcefulness, keenness, self drive or
aptitude or the strong mentoring pro-
vided by the institution when they are
studying. There is a band of about 60%
students in the mid segment which are
the ones who can be so developed &
made employable through strong &
extensive learning & development ex-
posure and will adequately meet the
expectations of mid segment employ-
ers, which are all successful & estab-
lished companies; its only some
bottom 20%, who are the non moti-
vated & lacking in both aptitude & self
drive or the resource capability within
them is too less, who should be classi-
fied as unemployable & who should
settle down for lesser jobs demanding
lower competency or skill levels.
However this perspective is
not visible in majority of cases; the ma-
jority of the employers expect the fresh
recruit to be billable, from day one.
Industry & commercial compulsions
may demand so, however, the best
suited talent can not be acquired in this
manner. There is no harm in expecting
such billable entry level talent but
then industry has to be prepared to in-
tegrate backwards i.e. it has to select
students based on potential early
enough and provide them the experi-
ential training during (say) their final
year and evaluate again at the end as to
how many of the students undergoing
such training have successfully come
up to expectations. This training, how-
ever, needs to be cost effective & good
in quality. To be cost effective the train-
ing has to be carried out either at the
work place or better still, in the final
Semester at the college itself, with the
help of training staff provided by in-
dustry. So that when the time comes for
the students in evaluation at the final
interviews before joining, he/she has
all the knowledge, skills and posseses
work place competencies expected of
him/her. Alternatively outsourced
agencies paid by the recruiter may be
engaged or selected few college faculty
can be trained (train the trainer). With-
out a driving motive in the student

and without the motivated trainer
the development effort does not suc-
ceed quite as much. If value adding
training programmes are run for stu-
dents without the minimum level of
commitment, very few of them actu-
ally participate & even fewer develop
the necessary level of skills & com-petencies. Not all the trainers as
available in the market meet the qual-
ity expectations. Further highly ef-
fective training organizations
available for good corporate training,
are too costly for average student (or
Parents) to afford. Because it is the
recruiter who benefits the most by
getting cost effective entry level
trained manpower on board the re-
cruiters should come forward to sub-
sidize the cost of such training
heavily. Also not this cost is easily re-
covered (offset) against post induc-tion training which gets reduced by
75% to 80%.
The mid segment students so de-
veloped have more rational & realistic
expectations & stay longer with em-
ployers & the attrition is substantially
reduced. It may be noted that bulk of
the entry level jobs are suitable for the
mid segment student aspirants and out
of our tweaked perceptions we are de-
manding much too high a talent level
(in terms of competencies & skills)
which the current system is not devel-
oping, as out lined earlier. There is no dearth of talent in any
part of India, we are crying wolf be-
cause of dearth of mentoring, compe-
tency and skill development
initiatives from industry and educa-
tional institutions alike.

The vastmajorityof students inour college are locstudents. Why do I need tobrand?
It is precisely because a university degree is so important argumost important item on ones CV for a good many years, if not olife that branding has an vital role to play. How an individual whim or herself on graduation will be affected enormously by thetion of the degree from that institution. You could say that the ucollege brand becomes part of the individuals own brandSo much is invested in students or other stakeholders making thchoice that institutions have a responsibility to help ensure thathappens.
We are sure you don't want to be part of the generic higher edmarket. We would invite you to sign up for the 'College SpotlighIt will be our pleasure to feature your institution.

Engineering technology education
in India focuses primarily on the
applied aspects of science and
engineering aimed at preparing gradu-
ates for practice in that portion of the
technological spectrum closest to prod-
uct improvement, manufacturing, con-
struction, and engineering operational
functions. Engineering education is a
key enabler of Indias growth and a vital
element in shaping our national destiny.
We strongly believe that it teaches us not
only how to think but the principles by
which to live.
GHRCE is now an Autonomous
Institute committed to overall develop-
ments of our students. We are engineer-
ing excellence to create excellent
engineering careers. In this process of
transformation we are adopting the in-
novative educational methodologies for
academic excellence.
Today, with sprawling college
building, updated library, well-equipped
laboratories & workshop, and to cap
them all with a rare conglomeration of
highly qualified and experienced faculty,
the college is aspiring for global recog-
nition as well as global standards. With
the coveted status ofAutonomy, we wish
to provide all the opportunities to our
students those shall lead to excellence.
We aim to provide Quality Engineering
Education to our students and wish to
keep no stone unturned for their better-
ment.
The academic curriculum is the
backbone of our educational system. Ut-
most efforts have been taken to design
this as per the current requirements of
technologies, industries and human re-
source development. The recommenda-
tions of National Knowledge
Commission are also followed. OurAc-
ademic Council and Board of Studies
comprises of veteran academicians, re-
searchers, industrialists and stakehold-
ers. The members of our NationalAdvi-
sory Board are esteemed personalities
like IIT Directors, NIT Directors, and
Scientists from Ministry of Information
Technology etc. We have inculcated the
strategy of extending the academic con-
tents to solve the real time problems. We
have taken care for adequacy of self
learning also.
The industrial internship and other
efforts taken for the enhancement of in-
dustry institute interaction will definitely
the students to undertake challenging
jobs in the industries. The interdiscipli-
nary course contents will help to in-
crease the scope of research domain
thereby increasing the standards of our
R&D system.
I am very much confident that the
autonomy conferred to GHRCE will
help to build tomorrows leading tech-
nocrats.
