2Definition of United Nations: Youth is the period between childhood and adulthood, described as the period of physical and psychological development from the onset of puberty to maturity and early adulthood.Percentage of youth in Sri Lanka is approximately 29.4%.The idea and vision towards the young people have been changed time to time.So we decided to concern about prevailing life styles of our youth.Mainly we conduct our survey based on five specific sub topics. Education Economy Religion & culture Health Entertainment

Most ( approximately 64%) of the respondents are male in our sample population.10

Most of the young people (approximately 54%) represent 20-25 age limit.1111

Most of the young people in our sample are unmarried. The graph shows it is approximately 62%.12

73% of young people in age group of 29-30 have been married. Only 6% of young people have been married in the age group of 20-22.13

Most of the young peoples race is Sinhala and it is about approximately 66%.14 Most of the youth are Buddhist. As a percentage it is about 62%.

16Most of the young people are educated people in our sample. Among them, approximately 58% young people are beyond in A/L and Degree.

Most of the young people in our sample haven't fluent English knowledge. But most of the young people have normal knowledge about 52% also there are 12% of the youth fluent in English.18

Most of the young people (approximately 56%) do not satisfy about the facilities in sample area.19

In estates 0% young people have learnt up to A/L. In rural areas approximately 81.25% young people have passed A/L . And also in urban areas 70% of young people have passed A/L.2020

In estates, no one participated for a computer course. But in urban areas 61% have followed a computer course.21Entertainment Level

Most (approximately 28.9%) of the young people in sample area spend their leisure time by watching TV.23The young people living in sample area (estate, urban, rural) spend their leisure time by watching TV. Internet chatting can be seen only in the urban area as a leisure time activity.24Most (approximately 62.5%) of young people in estate area accept that they have been given enough entertainment facilities. Only 37.5% believe they have not enough entertainment facilities.

Most of (approximately 74%) young people engage in religious activities once a day.

Majority of (approximately 56%) are employees. Minority of people (approximately 4%) are employed while studying.30

Majority of (approximately 27%) employees are private, estate and self- employees. Minority of employees (approximately 18%) are government.31

Most (approximately 75%) of the young employees are male. 50% of female are unemployed. 32

Most(approximately 54.5%) of young employees in private sector do not satisfy with their jobs. 36% of young self employees satisfy with their job type.33Most (approximately 100%)of young estate workers belong to grade 5 and up to grade 8 education category. All the young people in degree level are included only to government & private job types.34

31% of young people have a monthly income in range of 10,000-15,000 . 35According to the above mentioned graph , majority of degree holders earn more than Rs. 20000. Majority of groups whose education level is least than O/L earn less than Rs. 5000.

68% of youth population maintain savings while 32% don't.37 As to the opinions of young people in our sample, there is no jobs for below grade 5 and degree level in sample area. Most (approximately 42.85%) of job opportunities are available for up to level of grade 8 education.

Weight of the young people is asymmetrical. Mean of the data set is 56.08. And the median is 53.0. Skewness of the dataset is 0.78. There is few unusual data in the dataset. 40

The behavior of the data is asymmetrical. The skewness of the dataset is 1.75. Mean and the median of data is 163.44 and 159. 41The mean value of BMI (21.33) of male is greater than females BMI (19.15) value.

Most(approximately 61%) of female has the normal BMI state. And most(approximately 48%) of male has the obese level of BMI value.43

84% of young people are not suffering from any chronic disease.44

Rural area has the highest percentage (approximately 87.5%) of availability of sanitary facilities. But the least percentage (approximately 64%) of availability of sanitary facilities are recorded in estates.45 In estates 64% don't have the facility of pure drinking water sufficiently. But in rural area 88% have pure drinking water facility sufficiently.

According to the above graph, the highest percentage (25%) of chronic patients are reported from the age group of 20-22 among young people in sample area.47Major Issues48

Most (approximately 54.5%) of the young people around estates have been addicted to odd things. Problem of the drainage system also represents a highest percentage (approximately 82%).49

Majority (approximately 91%) of young people in estates do not satisfy with their monthly income. But most (approximately 77.7%)of the young people in estates satisfy about their job.50 Statement : There is no association between Variable A and Variable B.

General54EducationIn Badulla district, as a whole, we can see a better educational level. Furthermore there is a good trend of reading for degrees.

But young people in estate areas in Badulla show poor enthusiasm for higher education.

Though there is a good education level in rural and urban areas, young people in rural areas show much motivation for higher education than the young people in urban areas.

When we consider about the English knowledge, most of the population has a normal knowledge. As well as computer literacy shows almost equal percentages in urban and rural areas. But in estates it shows a very low percentage.

55Among the leisure time activities of the young people in Badulla area, most popular activities are watching TV and listening to the radio.

But the preference for other activities like aesthetic subjects and sports is very low.

Furthermore, most of the young people are not satisfied with the entertainment facilities in this area. That may affect for their low interest about other activities.

Internet chatting can be seen only among the young people in urban areas. Low knowledge in computer technology, low income and the low availability can be the reasons for this observation. Entertainment56Internet 56Among the young people in Badulla, we can see a high devotion for their religion.

By accepting that they have enough time to implement religious activities, we can conclude that they accept religion as an important part of their life.

Religious and cultural57While most of the young people in Badulla are employed. On the other hand. considerable percentage of young people do jobs while studying. This situation shows us that the young generation in Badulla, actively participate for the development of the national economy.

The youths participation to the governmental jobs is lower than that of the other sectors. But we can decide that they dont highly expect government jobs.

The population of the young people who get the highest income and the lowest income is in low percentages. So we can decide most of the young people in Badulla have a middle class economy.

But the most of young people in Badulla do not satisfy with their income. So we think the inflation of the country badly affects for the middle class people.

Economy58Most of the young people in Badulla prefer to maintain savings. That is a clue to decide that they think about their future economy of their lives.

Most of the employed young people in Badulla area have achieved general education level. There cannot be seen more job opportunities in Badulla for the young people who have high education level. It shows that there is a high rate of unemployment among leading people inside of Badulla area.

There is a strong combination between monthly income and the education level.

Facilities for a young healthy life in Badulla area is in a good position. But when we compare the main three areas, the sanitation facilities in estates should be improved. There is a good potential in spending a healthy life in rural areas than the urban and estate areas.

60Suggestions Since opportunities for higher education are inadequate for youth in Badulla area more facilities for higher education should be provided.

Sufficient job opportunities should be created for educated young people in Badulla area.

Infrastructure facilities in estate in Badulla area should be developed further.

More facilities for high level of appreciation should be supplied.61Suggestions cont.. Private sector investors should be motivated to start private educational centers.

To the young people who live in estate areas in Badulla should be introduced new technology.

Unemployed young people in Badulla must be offered loan facilities and knowledge to start new self employments.

There should be new projects to produce pure drinking water to the estate workers.

New youth and sports societies must be created to improve their unity, creativity and sports skills of young people in Badulla area.
