• Isaac (25:12-28:9)−Approximate dates of Isaac - ~2066-

1886 B.C.−Ishmael's and Isaacs Generations

(25:12-20)• Ishmael had twelve sons known as the

twelve princes• Ishmael died at age 137• His children settled to the east of Egypt

toward Assyria (Saudi Arabia)−Isaac was 123 when Ishmael died

• Isaac the son of Abraham• He was 40 when he married Rebekah

−Rebekah was the daughter of Bethuel, her brother was Laban

• Isaac (25:12-28:9)−Birth of Esau and Jacob (25:21-26)

• Rebekah is barren but Isaac prays and she becomes pregnant

−God tells them she is carrying twins who are struggling inside her

−God foretells about them (see 25:23 prophecy)−One will be stronger than the other−The older shall serve the younger

• Esau the first born first and Jacob second−Isaac was sixty years old at the twin's birth

• "Jacob" means one who takes by the heal or supplants

• Chronology of Isaac−Age 40 married Rebekah−Age 60 birth of Jacob and Esau (Abraham will see

−Esau Sells His Birthright (25:27-34)• Esau sells his birthright for red stew• He was therefore called Edom (means red)• Swore to Jacob and sold his birthright (see

Heb. 12:16-17)• Esau "dispised" his birthright – no remorse

• Isaac (25:12-28:9)−Isaac and Abimelech (26:1-22)

• God's promise repeated to Isaac (1-6)−Famine in the land so went to Gerar to Abimelech

king of the Philistines−God tells Isaac not to go to Egypt but to stay in

Gerar• God gives Isaac the promise he gave

Abraham−God will be with him and bless him−God will give this land to Isaac's descendants−God will establish the oath He made with

Abraham−His descendants will be as many as the stars−By his descendants all nations will be blessed−Because Abraham obeyed God and kept His

commandments, statutes, and laws (26:5)

• Isaac lies to Abimelech about Rebekah (7-11)

−Tell's the people Rebekah is his sister in fear of being killed

−Abimelech finds out and tells people they will be put to death if they touch her

• There is a sense of honoring another man's wife.

• Isaac prospers (12-17)−God blesses Isaac.−Philistines envied him and stopped up their wells−Abimelech tells Isaac to leave because he has

become too powerful−Isaac moves down into the valley of Gerar

• Dispute over wells (18-22)−Isaac re-digs the wells his father had dug as the

Philistines had stopped them up after Abraham's death

−The Philistines brought contention over the first two but with the third there was no argument

−Isaac thanks God for making a place for them

• E. Isaac to Beersheba (26:23-33)• 1. God reconfirms His covenant with

Isaac.• 2. Abimelech seeks out Isaac to make a

covenant with him.• a. Abimelech has sent Isaac away in

peace.• b. Abimelech wanted Isaac to treat him

as well.•

c. Had a feast, next moring said oaths and Abimelech left.

• 3. Dug a well at Beersheeba "well of oath."

• God reconfirms His covenant with Isaac−Abimelech seeks out Isaac to make a

• Esau takes two wives• They made life miserable for Isaac and

Rebekah−Jacob Steals Esau's Blessing (27:1-46)

• Isaac, who is almost blind, tells Esau to hunt and fix him some food from it and the Isaac will give him his blessing (as first born) (1-4)

• Isaac falls ill at age 137 and thought he was going to die so calls Esau to bless him, however Isaac lived to 180

• Jacob and Esau were 77 years old• Blessing = combination of asking God to

bless them and a prophecy of their future

• Rebekah plans to deceive Isaac (5-17)• Overhears the conversation between Isaac

and Esau• Rebekah tells Jacob to get two lambs so she

can fix Isaac something for Jacob to take to him to get the blessing

• Jacob afraid Isaac may feel him and see he is not hairy and discover the deception

• Rebekah puts skins on his hands and neck

• Jacob deceives his father (18-29)• Jacob says he is Esau: three lies Jacob tells

−He is Esau−He did as his father told him−Ask him to eat his venison

• Isaac thought he brought the game rather fast and wanted to touch him to see if he really was Esau

• Isaac blesses Jacob (after smelling his garments)

−fatness of the earth, abundance of grain, people serve you, nations bow down to you, mother's sons bow down to you, cursed those curse you, bless those who bless you.

• Esau seeks a blessing to replace what he lost (30-40)

• Esau arrives but finds Jacob has already received his blessings

−Isaac cannot take back the blessing−By law of that time period, a death-bed statement

could not be revoked• Isaac gives Esau another blessing

−away from the fertility of the earth.−away from the dew of the heavens.−live by your sword.−he will serve his brother.−he shall break the yoke from his neck (only

positive part).

• Esau plans to kill Jacob (41-46)• Esau plans to kill his brother after his

brother until Esau cools down• Rebekah does not want Jacob to take a wife

from the daughters of Heth like Esau (Hittites)

• Jacob is told to take a wife from Laban's daughters

• Told may God bless him to be fruitful and may he receive the blessing of Abraham to posses the land

• Esau see that having Canaanite wives displeased his father so he marries a daughter of Ishmael
