THANK YOU!
GIVING BACK
TO THE COMMUNITY!
We would like to thank all of our learn to
swim students for continuing to enrol each
term with us, as 10 cents from every lesson is
funding our Community Access Program for
Swimming (CAPS)!
Our migrant and refugee swimming lesson
program increases in popularity every term
thanks to our partnership with AMES Australia.
Term 1 had 26 students attend a 5 week
introductory program, our best term! This
introductory program begins with a tour of
the pool and identification of pool depth
signs as the majority of students have never
been to a swimming pool before. These
migrants, refugees and asylum seekers were
from Myanmar (Burma), Syria, China,
Thailand and Iran. Students are screened by
AMES Australia for this program based on
income and all students who are included
are extremely poor. We have also been
working with BUPA who fund a similar
program for Deakin University English
Language Institute students on low incomes.
In addition, we have been able to open up
more funding to children with special needs
who are unable to attend mainstream
lessons.
All students are currently referred to Surrey Park
by Scope for this funding. In the past we have
worked with the Mirabel Foundation and Family
Access Network. We are always open to
developing partnerships with other organisations
to help open up swimming lessons to all families.
If you work for an organisation who assists “at risk”
individuals or students with a disability and would
like more information on partnership options,
please contact Emily, the swim school manager,
on 9898 8876.
10 cents from every lesson is funding our Community
Access Program for Swimming (CAPS)!

WATER SAFETY IN OUR COMMUNITY
A FREE initiative from Surrey Park
Swimming
We are now delivering an education program
into child care centres, kinders and schools that
approaches learning about water safety
through interactive role play and fun. We cover
areas such as safety at the beach, home, pool
and inland waterways.
We are committed to increasing awareness of
water safety in our local community. Our take
home messages we deliver are directed to
adults and kids as we aim to encourage our
whole community to stay safe in and around
water.
If you think your school or kinder would be
interested in our free talks, please drop in and
ask for Lauren or email her at
Welcome back to all returning families and a big welcome to new
families to Surrey Park Swimming.
This term we have introduced a Welcome Handbook that covers all
things we think you will need to know about us, our processes, Aqualink
Box Hill entry, rules, feedback etc. Whether you are new to Surrey Park
Swimming or a returning family we suggest you follow this link to view our
handbook.
Our commitment to continual improvement in our processes and
communication is ongoing so we would welcome your feedback.

3. The cost of technical suits makes them
unattainable for many families. SV does
not want to add any extra financial
pressure on parents with unnecessary
purchases.
4. These suits aren’t designed for young
swimmers. The manufacturers design
these suits for older athletes. One of the
main benefits of wearing a technical suit is
for muscle compression. Children, who
are not yet developed, are not impacted
by this benefit. Swimmers cannot ‘grow
into’ these suits.
5. A common misconception amongst
younger swimmers is that without a
technical suit, a swimmer cannot swim
fast. An age group swimmer does not
need a performance suit to swim fast;
swimmers will improve and attain PBs
regardless of the sort of suit they are
wearing due to gradual increase in
training and skill development.
6. The aim should be to build mentally-
strong swimmers, confident in his or her
own ability and training ethic rather than
an athlete depending on a technical suit
to get an improved result.
7. Technical suits are required as you get
older when your skills, conditioning and
physique are developed. At that time, the
fraction of a second drop you’ll get from
the suit will actually make a difference.
TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE SUITS FOR 11/U SWIMMERS
Why has Swimming Victoria put this rule in place? 1. There is no documented evidence that
supports performance benefits of technical suits for
athletes 11 years and under.
2. Personal best times should not be the only
evaluation or measure of success for younger
swimmers. Technique and skill development is
essential for all long term swimmer development. It is
crucial that as swimmers progress through the sport
they have developed a solid foundation in
technique and stroke development to enable them
to achieve higher results in the latter years of their
career.

Twilight Tuesday Series Term One 2017 draws to a close!
It is a great series introducing swimmers to the sport of swimming and
enabling them to practice racing skills in nurturing environment. We
look forward to seeing you all again in Term Four.
Week Four
Week 4 of Twilight Tuesday Racing for Term 1 was held on 21st March.
Unfortunately this time around it was quite wet but that didn't deter the
swimmers. Once again the session was a busy one with around 60
swimmers from Junior and State Development Squads plus a good
number from the Club's Learn to Swim Program participating.
The times swimmers achieved can be accessed in the following table:

FEES AND PAYMENTS FOR COMPETITIVE SQUAD
It’s hard to believe we are already into
April and the end of the 2016/2017
competitive swimming season. We
would like to congratulate our National
Championship swimmers travelling to
Queensland and look forward to
celebrating your achievements in the
next Newsletter.
It has been a busy couple of months for
the Committee, including a Strategic
Planning day in March where the
Committee evaluated and set future
goals for the Club. The selection panel
appointed by the Committee is
continuing the process of finding a new
Director of Coaching and the
shortlisting and selection process is well
underway. We hope to make an
announcement by the end of the
Month.
For many, this week was the last
opportunity to say goodbye to current
Director of Coaching, Matt Brown as he
heads to Queensland with the National
squads for the next 2 weeks and training
squads begin breaks at Easter.
COMMITTEE UPDATE
At his last training, Matt was presented with a gift of a
signed and framed 2016 Richmond Football jersey – his
second favourite Club in Melbourne!
Once again, I would like to thank Matt for his strong
contribution on many fronts to Surrey Park over the last 2
years and wish him every success in his new venture in
Queensland.
The Club also farewells Coach Kylie, a former swimmer
for Surrey Park, Kylie has coached at the Club for the
past 6 years. We would like to thank Kylie for her hard
work and wish her well in her future endeavours.
