SURREY – AnAbbotsford man waskilled and a pregnantSurrey woman lost her baby in separatetraffic crashes in North Surrey this pastweekend. Both were backseat passengers.

At press time a 25-year-old womanwas still listed in critical condition inhospital following a traffic crash at 96thAvenue and 132nd Street just after 4 p.m.Saturday. Her unborn baby died.

Surrey RCMP Insp. Randall Marquardtsaid the woman, whose name has not beenreleased, was one of five passengers in a

Toyota Tercel that collided with a NissanQuest.

“It appears as though the Toyota wentthrough a red light,” he said. The pregnantwoman sustained the most serious injuriesand firefighters had to free her from thewreck using the “jaws of life.”

Meantime, a 30-year-old Abbotsfordman, whose name has not been released, was killed after the vehicle he was incrashed into a power pole on 100thAvenue, about 100 metres east of 156thStreet, shortly after 3:10 a.m. Saturday.

“It appeared the vehicle travelled at

high speed eastbound, possibly after turn-ing off of 156th street, and spun out ofcontrol,” Insp. Dave Attfield said. Therear of the vehicle struck the pole and wasbadly damaged.

“There were two front passengers thatwere conscious and able to communicate,”he added, but the man in the back “wasnot responsive.”

Attfield said it took a while for firefight-ers and paramedics to rescue them becausea power line was down beside them.

“Hydro was immediately called andrescuers were eventually able to reach the

vehicle,” Attfield said. “At this point therear passenger was found to be deceased. The two front occupants were transportedto hospital with undetermined injuries.”

There was also a serious crash on 100thAvenue at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, whena Ford Mustang heading south on 152ndStreet crossed the centre median andcrashed with three other vehicles headingnorth. Two occupants of the Mustang andan occupant of one of the other vehicleswere seriously injured while three otherssustained less serious injuries.

SURREY – RodDales is feeling a littlehappier now than hewas back in July.

The city wants to expropriate twopieces of property owned by Dales in CityCentre to make way for the constructionof a new city hall, public plaza and anunderground parking garage. There’s atwo-storey office building in the 10300-block of City Parkway and a parking lotunder the SkyTrain tracks in the sameblock of 104th Avenue.

The city has been buying up propertiesin the area for some time and only needsthe Dales parcels and another adjacentlot occupied by a medical practice tocomplete the acquisitions needed for thenew civic centre.

In July, Dales told the Now the citywas low-balling him on the sale priceof the properties. He had an assessmentshowing the fair market value to be $4.54million. The city was offering $3.5 mil-lion.

Dales went to court in an attempt toblock the expropriation, but the rulingwent against him. Now, he and the cityare talking again, Dales said Monday.

“There’s a possibility of a settlement. There’s an offer (from the city), but I justdon’t want to talk about it until a deal isdone.”

Dales said an agreement with the citycould be hammered out by Oct. 1.

In the meantime, Surrey is going aheadwith the expropriation.

Council was scheduled to vote onapproving the expropriation at itsMonday’s meeting.

SURREY – The publicwill get its first look at thenewly renovated NewtonCultural Centre in less than two weeks.

The centre is located in the old Firehall10 at 13530 72nd Ave. The city spent $1.5million updating the building for its newuse and the Arts Council of Surrey has justlaunched a fundraising campaign to comeup with the $300,000 it needs to equip theplace.

“We’ve just sent out word to a lot ofbusinesses. They’re asking us for more infor-mation, so we’re just putting that togethernow,” said arts council president, CarolGirardi.

They’re also looking for a corporate spon-sor, somebody to write a nice cheque inexchange for the right to name the centre.

“The Newton Cultural Centre is just thename we’ve hung on it for now,” Girardisaid.

Individuals are invited to donate to the

centre, too. Sponsorship levels from $100 to$5,000 and more are available. Arts councilmemberships are also available beginning at$22 per year for an associate membership.

The new building includes a theatre, gal-lery space and meeting rooms and on theweekend of Sept. 25 and 26, it will be openfor viewing.

“It’s going to be our sneak peak weekend, when people can come in and see whatwe’re doing here,” Girardi said.

“There are so many arts organizations outthere the public doesn’t know about and theidea is to get the word out there.”

The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 4p.m., Sat., Sept. 25 and from noon to 4 p.m.on Sunday, Sept. 26.

SURREY – A cor-oner’s inquest jury is rec-ommending that a sobri-ety and detox centre be built in Surreyfollowing last week’s hearing into the caseof a man who fell into medical distresswhile in Surrey RCMP custody and died inhospital three days later.

The inquest, held at the B.C. CoronersCourthouse in Burnaby last week, foundthat Scott Alexander Walker, 43, died onFeb. 7, 2008 of natural causes, namelyliver failure brought on by hepatic cirrho-sis, Hepatitis C and chronic alcoholism.

The jury recommended to HealthMinister Kevin Falcon that a sobriety anddetox centre be built in Surrey with asection dedicated to dealing with peoplewho’ve been arrested while under theinfluence of alcohol or drugs.

It also recommended that a doctor orother medical practitioner be assigned tothe Surrey RCMP cells to obtain prisoners’

medical records, provide medical help andhelp guards check prisoners to lessen thechance of medical emergencies.

Further, the jury recommended thatcity hall and the Surrey RCMP ensure thataudio is included in the CCTV surveillanceof the lockup, and that the beds in twocells be lowered so prisoners won’t be ser-iously injuries if they fall off.

The jury also recommended that thepolice improve their record keeping, theircommunication with the BC AmbulanceService, and that a guard be delegated towatch prisoners on CCTV if medical orsafety issues arise.

The RCMP currently has three policies– national, provincial and local detach-ment – governing prisoner safety. Thejury recommended that it be explainedto Mounties why there are three policies, and which one should be followed at whattime, to avoid confusion.

School board bows to auditLANGLEY – Failures of planning, financial control,

and the board’s inability to work together are at theroot of the Langley school district’s financial problems, said the auditor general’s report released Friday.

“We have made a number of recommendations tothe board, the most important one being the trusteesmust find ways to work together effectively,” provin-cial Auditor General John Doyle wrote.

The auditor general was brought in earlier this yearto help get the district’s finances in order.

Over the course of a few months, the district wentfrom being told it had a small surplus, to finding it hada combined debt and deficit of about $13.5 million.

Doyle’s report makes a series of nine recommenda-tions, broken down across areas of governance, inter-nal financial controls, and long-term planning.

“A key risk to the future success of the Langley SD[school district] is the working relationships amongstboard trustees,” the report says.

A lack of a positive “tone at the top” and two dis-tinct factions are hindering the board’s work, it says.

The school board has already met and endorsed theplan unanimously, Chair Joan Bech said Friday. Everyrecommendation will be adopted.

Festival budget triplesRICHMOND – The City of Richmond and its

elected council are going “gung ho” with hosting nextyear’s Tall Ships Maritime Festival.

That’s the charge of Coun. Greg Halsey-Brandt,the lone dissenting voice on council after it waivedthrough a staff recommendation to spend $1.6 millionon infrastructure for the 2011 Tall Ships Festival atGarry Point Park.

Hasley-Brandt is having trouble swallowing the fig-ure, which he says is almost three times the $550,000he agreed to earlier this year.

“I think (staff) are right out to lunch about how thetaxpayer feels about all of this.”

One of the justifications for spending the extra cashwas that the floats could be easily relocated elsewherealong the Steveston waterfront area and provide“future moorage revenues for the city.”

Leaks put pool in limboMAPLE RIDGE – After more than 60 years as a sum-

mertime hub for Pitt Meadows, it looks like the HarrisPark pool has seen its last cannonball.

“It’s gone through different renovations and upgradesover the years and now it’s pretty much reached theend of its life,” said Michael Millward, Maple Ridge/PittMeadows facilities operations manager.

Millward recommends the pool be closed.“The pool, as is, will not have another year’s life,” said

Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean.According to Millward’s report, the pool was losing

an average of 25,362 litres of water every day during thesummer. In 2008, the pool lost an average of 8,300 litresof heated, chlorinated water every day.

MacLean said he was aware of the problems with thepool, but not the extent of water lost every day.

“We’re spending thousands of dollars to pre-heat thepool,” he said. – Maple Ridge Times

SURREY – The Crownis seeking a 19-yearprison sentence for a manwho had unprotected sex with a string ofwomen without telling them he was HIV-positive.

Adrian Sylver Nduwayo has been con-victed of aggravated sexual assault againstfive women.

He is scheduled to be sentenced nextMonday in B.C. Supreme Court in NewWestminster.

A publication ban shields the namesof his victims. Nduwayo was found guiltyin five of seven counts related to womenin Surrey, Delta, Burnaby and PortCoquitlam.

While the sex had been “ostensiblyconsensual,” Justice James Williams noted,Nduwayo did not tell he women he wasHIV-positive.

This, the Crown argued, “vitiated,” ornullified, the women’s’ consent.

Nduwayo’s conduct “was outrageousand wrong,” Williams found.

The court heard from Nduwayo’s vic-tims. He began dating one woman afterthey’d met at a bus stop in Vancouver, inJuly 1997. When she asked him about hishealth, the court heard, Nduwayo deflect-ed her question, replying “What? Youthink I have HIV?”

After she became pregnant, he toldher he’d been HIV-positive for two years.

Medical tests revealed neither she nor thebaby had been infected. She complained topolice, the judge noted, “but it appears hercomplaint was not taken seriously.”

Another woman learned in March 2001that she was HIV-positive after gettingpregnant by Nduwayo. The woman testi-fied that after she confronted him aboutnot telling her about his infection he toldher, “It’s none of your business.” Her childwas not infected.

That same year, Nduwayo met anotherwoman at a wedding and pursued her forseveral months before she relented. Whenshe asked him if he had any diseases, hereplied, “no.”

The court heard he left her a phonemessage saying, “By the way, you’d betterget tested for HIV” after she’d spurned hismarriage proposal, but she didn’t take hismessage seriously. Years later, she discov-ered she was pregnant and after a batteryof tests learned that she is HIV-positive.She had a miscarriage.

The court also heard Nduwayo had meta woman at a club in late 2001 or early2002. She asked him to wear a condom, but he replied “It’s OK, sweetie, we don’tneed it.”

She was later tested and found negative. This was Nduwayo’s second trial on

the matter. In 2005 he was sentenced to15 years but was granted a new trial onappeal.

Emmanuel Arceneaux - 84

Height: 6.02 | Weight: 211Born: September 17, 1987,

Alexandria, Louisiana

College: Alcorn StateYears: 2 BC / 2 CFL

I’m from the south – I was born and raised in Alexandria, Louisiana. As a guy who has always been pretty athletic, I began playing football in highschool and also ran track. In fact, I did so well at that level that I was named anall-district wide receiver and free safety and was also an honourable mentionplace kicker in my senior year.

When I graduated from high school, I decided that attending college at Mississippi’sAlcorn State University would give me the best opportunity to get a post-secondary education while realizing my dream to play football at the next level. After four years with the Braves, I seized the opportunity to head north toCanada to join the Lions as a rookie guy in their receiving corps. I had a greattime in my first season which motivated me to train even harder when I wentback home during the winter months, in addition to working as a substitute

teacher and track coach at my former high school while mentoring local kids aspart of Alexandria’s Boys and Girls Club.

Now that I’m in my second season, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day to playthe game I love. Nothing would make me happier than to win a championship with this team. Winor lose, the guys in our locker room are a close group and I’m proud of our accomplishments on and off the field. As a kid who dreamed of being a professional athlete from a young age, I know what it’s like to look to others for inspiration. For that reason, I love taking

part in the Lions’ community efforts during the season, particularly the club’s annual Timbits Camp. I feel proud knowing that I could be teachingfootball basics and the importance of being active to a young kid who one day could use his or her athletic ability to secure a university scholarship

and a bright future. As a guy who comes from a small town, I know that it’s up to the local community to invest in their kids in order to ensure they succeed in life.

Farming issue spurs votersto cast early ballots in Delta

❚BUSINESS

SURREY – The SurreyBoard of Trade is host-ing an awards luncheonThursday to recognize theefforts of 13 local business-es working to reduce theircarbon footprint.

The companies haveall recently completed theClimate Smart pilot pro-ject, B.C.’s first municipallysupported climate changeprogram designed to helpsmall- and mid-sized busi-nesses reduce greenhousegas emissions.

The program was startedin Surrey back in Aprilwith funding supportfrom the city and MetroVancouver. The Board ofTrade co-hosted the pro-gram along with the city.

Participating businesseslearned how to reducegreenhouse gas throughmeasures such as updatedvehicle fleets, no-idle poli-cies, the use of bio-fuels,reducing paper use andother strategies.

“This program supportsthe goals and visions out-lined in our SustainabilityCharter,” said SurreyMayor Dianne Watts, whocongratulated the partici-pants.

“Businesses are findingout that adopting environ-mentally-friendly practicescan reduce costs, increaseefficiencies and create neweconomic opportunities.”

The awards luncheonis scheduled from 11:30a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday,Sept. 16 at Eaglequest GolfCourse, 7778 152nd St.

DELTA – A steadystream of voters hasshown up to cast bal-lots in the advanced polls for Saturday’sDelta council byelection.

Advanced polls were held at therecreation centres in North Delta andTsawwassen as well as at municipalhall in Ladner Sept. 4, 8 and 9 for thosewanting to cast their ballots ahead of theSept. 18 byelection.

Eight candidates – Peter Harms, MariaDeVries, Amy Ghuman Sara, Ian Paton,Sylvia Bishop, Sandeep Pandher, RayRobinson and Kathleen Higgins – arevying for the seat left vacant due tothe death of longtime council memberGeorge Hawksworth this spring.

At municipal hall on Wednesday mor-ning there were no lineups, but a steadyflow of voters showing up. An electionofficial at the hall said it was busier onthe first day of advance voting the previ-ous Saturday.

Delta CAO George Harvie filledout his registration and cast his ballotWednesday morning, saying he wasn’tabout to hint at who he’s supporting.

Another man, who didn’t want to benamed, said he came out to vote becausethe farmland issue was an important onefor him.

Harvie Delmar, accompanied byhis wife Phyllis, also said farming wasimportant, particularly the Southlandsquestion.

“We would have voted anyhow butwe are strong proponents of farminguninterrupted,” said Delmar, a SouthDelta resident since 1967.

Noting she had to vote in the advancepoll because she would be visiting herdaughter in Bellingham on byelectionday, Velma Leuis said she supported can-didate Ian Paton.

“I like the fact he was a teacher anda farmer and he lived here all his life. Ididn’t know the others so I said, ‘Theheck with it, I’ll vote for him.’”

Saying she would have taken the timeto vote regardless of the issues, ChristineTerpsma said she was interested in whatthe candidates had to say about theSouthlands.

“I’m a farmer, so I have a lot of opin-ions about those sorts of things,” shesaid.

Last week Bishop, who has beenendorsed by TriDelta, Southlands theFacts and former councillor KristaEngelland, announced that ex-mayorBeth Johnson is also in her camp.

Not long after that announcement,Paton, who has the support of MayorLois Jackson and councillors ScottHamilton, Robert Campbell and BruceMcDonald, announced a list of notableswho support his candidacy, includingthe Delta firefighters’ union, the DeltaFarmers’ Institute and former mayorDoug Husband, as well as several others.

As far as the others candidates go,Peter Harms said that while he receiveda lot of support, he has also been pub-licly berated for his position to allowdevelopment on the Southlands. Harmssaid Tsawwassen, as well as Ladner andNorth Delta, need to engage in a conver-sation on the touchy issue.

Ghuman Sara announced this weekshe wants to help better educate resi-dents about the permit process to allevi-ate what she said were many of the set-backs and frustrations homeowners feel.

Higgins has been running on a plat-form that includes the need for moreaffordable housing. DeVries says shewants to ensure council is making soundfinancial decisions.

Pandher has a dozen points in hisplatform, including protecting BurnsBog under the United Nations RamsarConvention, as well as establishing aninterpretive centre.

Robinson, who along with Harmsdoesn’t have campaign signs, is callingfor internal audits on municipal govern-ment spending and more private sectorinvolvement in projects.

It didn’t getnearly the kindof sustainednews coverageit deserved, butthe report byB.C. auditor-gen-eral John Doyleon the state ofthe province’sAgriculture Land Reserve shouldbe cause for concern.

Doyle raised two key issuesthat have the potential of seri-ously threatening the ALR’s futureviability and value.

First, he notes the budget forthe Agriculture Land Commissionhas dramatically declined in recentyears, thus impairing the commis-sion’s ability to ensure preserva-tion of land and monitoring com-pliance of regulations.

Second, he notes that while thetotal amount of land in the reservehas remained relatively stable overthe years, a significant amount ofprime farmland has been takenout while less-valuable land in thenorth has been added.

The ALR was established in1973 by the New DemocraticParty government of the day.Along with the creation of theLabor Relations Board and theInsurance Corp. of B.C., establish-ing the ALR has to rank as one ofthe lasting legacies of that govern-ment.

At a time when ensuring an on-going food supply becomes moreand more important (as climatechange begins to alter agriculturepractices around the world) it iscritical that B.C.’s lush and pre-cious farmland be protected.

Doyle, who is quickly earning areputation as a no-nonsense, inde-pendent watchdog of government, points out the annual budget forthe commission has shrunk fromalmost $3 million at the beginningof this government’s first termto barely more than $2 million. That’s a cut of one-third and it hasled to fewer staff and resources,

Now, morethan ever,farms needprotecting

❚POLITICS

KeithBALDREY

InTheH

ouse

which makes ongoing preservationof farmland that much harder toaccomplish.

Meanwhile, the loss of primefarmland is even more worri-some. Since the ALR’s creation,Vancouver Island has lost 13 percent of its prime farmland, whilethe Okanagan has lost 12 per centand the Lower Mainland (primar-ily the Fraser Valley) has lost eightper cent.

The development pressures thatcome with population growth aremostly to blame for the loss ofgood farmland. When the ALRwas first established, for example, places such as Surrey, Delta andLangley were barely populatedcompared to the number of peoplewho live there now.

Whole farms have beenreplaced by huge subdivisions andhighway projects (I remember alarge sheep and vegetable farmbeing directly across the roadfrom my grandparents’ home onSaltspring Island; a parking lot, tennis courts and a soccer field arethere now).

Some of the land-use fights havebeen memorable: the SpetiforeLands in Delta, Six Mile Ranchnear Kamloops, Fantasy Gardens

and Terra Nova in Richmond andColony Farms in Coquitlam allgenerated a lot of headlines overthe years.

The picture is not entirelygloomy, however. AgricultureMinister Steve Thomson seems toget the idea that more has to bedone to protect the ALR.

Thomson, who comes froma farming family, is a formerexecutive director of the B.C.Agriculture Council and he hasemerged as one of the steadiesthands in the B.C. Liberal govern-ment.

He has asked the new chairof the ALC, Richard Bullock, totour the province and meet withagriculture groups and other stake-holders to get a sense of the chal-lenges faced by the ALC.

Bullock is supposed to file areport in October. Hopefully, whathe discovers on his fact-findingtour will spur the B.C. governmentto not only restore the funding tothe ALC, but to take steps to stopprime farmland from being turnedinto blacktop.

Now, there’s no question morehousing and transportation net-works will have to be built in theyears ahead. And it’s more than

likely that some ALR land willform part of future treaties withFirst Nations bands.

But Doyle’s report is a timelyreminder that protecting our foodsupply should be of paramountimportance.

I suspect the NDP will makepreserving the ALR a key part ofits election platform come 2013. Ifthat party does indeed gain power,it will be interesting to see if ittakes a look back at the record ofits predecessor in the 1970s to gaina sense of proper priorities.

The Editor,Re: “They cry together. They

run together. They survive togeth-er,” the Now, Sept. 10.

On behalf of the CloverdaleTerry Fox Run committee, wewant to thank Marisa Babicfor her outstanding story aboutKimberly and Lynn Sparling.

What the story didn’t mention ishow tirelessly these two survivorshave worked as part of our com-mittee, with a goal of making the2010 Cloverdale Terry Fox Runthe best one this community hasever seen.

With class, grace and courage, they’ve helped with fundraising, sponsorships and planning forregistration and kids’ activities. They’ve been inspiring and haveshown us all first-hand what thevalue of cancer research can meanto an individual family.

Despite common conceptions, there are many ways for peopleto participate in the run, even ifthey choose not to collect pledges. We invite people to come to theCloverdale Legion on Sept 19.

If kindergarten ain’t brokethen let’s fix what is brokenThe Editor,

Re: “Full-day class still leaveslots of time to be a kid,” the Now,Sept. 7.

Tom Zillich’s column regardingfull-day kindergarten was clearlywritten from the perspective of aparent of a child in kindergarten.

The letter from Thea Wilsonin response (Sept. 10 issue) wasclearly written from the perspec-tive of an educator.

I submit another perspective, that of the parent of a high schoolstudent (in North Delta). Havingnurtured three kids through highschool and watched in increasedfrustration every year when cru-cial programs are cut, it is reallyhard to justify the dollars spentto increase the hours of colour-ing, story time and naps for fiveyear olds – particularly when highschool students are so close tomaking decisions that will effectthem the rest of their lives.

Athletic programs have beenscrapped. To some this may bejust adolescent play, but to thosehoping to go to university on ath-letic scholarships – the boat is sail-ing without them.

Music programs are almostnon-existent unless you seriouslybelieve a living can be made play-ing “Kumbaya” on a ukulele.

So many teachers have been let

go that frequently there is only oneavailable class in the few remain-ing arts programs and studentsbattle for spots in those classes.

Technical courses such ascarpentry or mechanics are onlyoffered at certain schools so fam-ilies will have siblings attendingdifferent high schools in order toget access to the programs theyneed.

If quality of education is trulythe goal then let’s fix what’s bro-ken.

Wendy GageNorth Delta

Vote out B.C.’s piratesThe Editor,

It is not wrong to say that it isthe Liberals’ lies that have people

hopping mad.But it goes so much further and

if left at that, we would let themget away again when they dumpCampbell as the sacrificial lamb atthe next Liberal convention andsay everything is all right now.

HST is not a new tax but a shiftof who pay the tax, going fromthe mostly multinational primaryresource companies’ profit marginonto the backs of the income earn-ers and small businesses.

If, in fact, Colin Hansen hadindeed not seen the briefing notesas he claims, he has done us alla huge disservice, as it states thatunemployment would rise and theGDP would fall for at least fiveyears and maybe longer before itmay improve.

If he did, what were they think-ing? And that is not all that hasthe voters fuming. The workingstiff will have to pay $200 a monthor $2,400 a year (after tax dollars)in tolls to cross a bridge to earn aliving while the West Vancouverrich will zoom to ski in Whistleron a new highway we also paidfor.

The taxes from the people inthe past built a railway to connectthis province and it was sold undera cloud of suspicion at a bargainprice for a 999-year lease – andthe first thing to go was the pas-senger service for the people.

The run of river projects willdam and destroy countless wilder-ness areas to give the investors aguaranteed high price on the elec-tricity to be paid for by you and I.Wall Street investors are lining upfor that one.

Carbon taxes, parking taxes, taxon taxes, and on and on. It doesnot matter who we elect, as longas it is not this bunch of piratesonce again.

Teenagers often seem togrow in the blink of an eye,but few can compare toBrenden Parker.

Last fall, the Cloverdale boy endured alengthy surgical procedure to straighten hiscurved spine and relieve pressure on hisinternal organs.

The 26-hour surgery was complicated andnearly claimed Brenden’s life, but he is now ableto speak better and generally live more comfort-ably, despite the challenges of cerebral palsy.

Brenden also grew five inches — literallyovernight.

For the family, one challenge is nowbeing able to safely raise Brenden, 14, intotheir wheelchair lift-equipped GMC Safari.Because of Brenden’s added height, thetop of his head rubs against the van’s doorframe.

cially if Brenden wants to bring his bud-dies somewhere,” explained Baron Parker,Brenden’s dad.

A larger van is needed, but the price ofone can command $80,000. It’s one reasonwhy the Parkers, their friends and corpor-ate supporters have launched the Lift of LifeFoundation, the goal of which is to raisemoney to help families buy vehicles equippedwith wheelchair lifts.

Cloverdale’s Brenden Parker and his family need a larger van, now that the 14-year-old is a full five inches taller following spinal surgery. The Parkers and friends have started the Lift of Life Foundation to help families purchase expensive wheelchair lift-equipped vehicles.

With kids back toschool last week, parentsacross the country arebreathing a simultaneoussigh of relief.

However, the nextchallenge parents are fac-ing is the sports dilemma.Do you enter your childinto a sport this year and,if so, which one?

Some parents shudder at the idea ofputting their child into a sport too early, for fear the competitive aspect might betoo much.

Despite many paying lip-service to thenotion that sports are about teaching chil-dren teamwork, fair play and sportsman-ship, sometimes it just doesn’t ring true.

I really do believe wholeheartedly insports, but why do some adults have to

take all the fun out of it for kids?Growing up, I was involved in track

and field, basketball and volleyball. In highschool, I pursued volleyball as my mainsport of choice. I went to volleyball campsduring the summer and, at one point, itlooked as though I was going to get a vol-leyball scholarship to attend university.

I was pushed hard by my coach at thetime. She was demanding, she was loudand, at times, downright mean.

I remember one particular game whereone of my teammates and I both went forthe ball at the same time and ended up col-liding, allowing the ball to hit the floor. Ourcoach came onto the court, grabbed us bythe arm and led us to the bench where, forthe next two minutes, she screamed in ourfaces about the incident. She then took herclipboard, broke it over her knee, threw it

across the floor and wouldn’t let us play forthe rest of the game.

That’s what ended it for me. She hadtaken all the fun out of playing the game.

This past summer, my son was in soc-cer camp. I have had him in a couple ofother sports, but this year I thought soccerwould be a good choice. As I stood off tothe side watching the young boys and girlsgo through some drills, I noticed an over-zealous father yelling at his son through-out the session.

At one point, his son had to kick theball in a race against another team andkicked it off the field. Unfortunately, histeam came in last.

For some reason, the boy’s father feltthat wasn’t acceptable. He yelled out tohis son over the field, “That’s because ofyou.”

I was stunned.I “get” that we want to encourage and

support our children to do their best, butat what point does that support becometoo pushy and downright humiliating?

His son’s face told the story. I wantedto take the father over to his son, whowas close to tears, and tell him, “That’sbecause of you.”

These children are seven. I don’t wantto know a child who takes a career insports seriously at this age. I want to knowthey are having fun and that they enjoywhat they are doing.

This year, let’s allow our children totruly experience the concept of teamwork, sportsmanship and fun in sports. Let’slead by example and keep those who havenegative comments and unsportsmanlikebehaviour off the children’s field.

As my mother used to say, “If youhaven’t got anything nice to say, don’t sayanything at all.”

In other words, zip it.

LOCAL HEATING CONTRACTORGIVING AWAY FREE FURNACES

WITH THE INSTALLATION OF ANYHEAT PUMP SYSTEM!

Dear Friend,

Heating season is fast approaching and soon our phonewill be ringing off the hook. Unfortunately our dreadedfour week “shoulder season” that precedes our normalhigh season is also about to arrive. This time of yearcan be a killer to our staff as it isn’t hot enough forair conditioning calls or cold enough for heating calls. Idon’t want my highly skilled technicians waiting for the weather to break so I ammaking this bold offer.

With every new complete heat pump / furnace system we install untilSeptember 25, 2010 we will give the furnace for free!

That’s right, the furnace is free. No special high end only, no builder grade special, whatever type or efficiency heat pump / furnace system installed will receive thefurnace for free.

All of these systems come with our ten-year parts and labour warranty, that meansno repair costs for you until 2020!

Now this special offer can’t last forever, when the cooler weather comes we will besimply too busy to consider a special like this. This sale must end on September 25,2010!

HURRY, CALL 946-1000 TODAY, THE FIRST 25 SYSTEMS SOLD WILL RECEIVE AFREE WIRELESS THERMOSTAT VALUED AT $ 495.00

This is a state of the art wireless thermostat, with this thermostat you can controlyour house’s heating from any room in your home.

Still not enough? How about special financing rates as low as 6.24% with nopayments for 6 months. Call now before the cooler weather comes and it’s too latefor you to save big on replacing your old furnace.

I’ve saved the best for last!

Now, here the part where I explain how you may be able to buy your systemwithout taking a penny extra out of your pocket and in some cases put somepennies back into your pocket. If your furnace is more than ten years old, and youreplace it with an energy star system, the money you may save on your utility billcould be enough to pay the monthly payment on your new system.

PLUS THERE MAY BE GOVERNMENT GRANTS FOR UP TO $1420 AVAILABLE!!

Think about it. Replacing an outdated system with a current more efficient andreliable energy star rated system could more than pay for your new system.

Here’s another way of looking at it. With what you may save on your utility billsand may receive from the Provincial or Federal Government, it’s like having theutility company and government pay for your new air conditioning and heatingsystem!

Call now don’t wait until there is frost in the air and your old furnacestarts acting up, save time and save your money! Call 604-946-1000

So far, fundraising efforts includea fitness “boot camp marathon,”which raised close to $6,000 onAug. 29, and a golf tournament setfor Sept. 25 at the Newlands coursein Langley.

The long-range goal of thefoundation is to donate one lift-equipped van every year, with theParkers first in line. Their currentvehicle would then be donated toanother family that can use it.

“It’s been an excellent vehicle forus, and there’s lots of life left in it,”Baron said of their van, which ori-

ginally cost $50,000.For four years, the vehicle has

helped sports-loving Brenden travelto hockey games involving hisbeloved Cloverdale Colts rep team, the roster of which is filled with hispals.

Ideally, a new lift-equipped vanwould have drop-floor capabilitiesand also allow for the removal ofthe front passenger seat.

“It’d be great to be able to haveBrenden ride up front, which he’snever done,” Baron said. “It’dalso allow us to have him ride inthe vehicle with his grandfather(Baron’s dad, who is also in a

wheelchair). They’ve never donethat before.”

The goal of organizers of the golftournament is to have 120 playerssigned up for a round and dinner($150), with a dinner-only optionalso available ($50).

Some B.C. Lions football playerswill be in attendance.

“Brenden goes to a lot of theirpractises up there in Whalley,”Baron said. “He and Wally (Buono,Lions head coach) are buddies.”

The cheers from belowfueled my courage. Still, with every step the aircurrents seemed ever stronger, my knucklesgrew ever whiter as my fingers clutched therigging and my refrains of “Yo Ho Ho” sangout with ever decreasing bravado.

But there was little choice. My ascent was a matter of honour borne

out of a cheery time the evening before, when I had blithely accepted a challengeto climb the ratlines. After all, how hardcould it be? My ancestors had served in theBritish Royal Navy on craft such as this, and surely somewhere, somehow, their saltwas in my veins.

In truth, sailing has never been my fortebut after a few days aboard Angelique, oneof a dozen historic, multi-mast vessels thatform Maine Windjammer Association, itwas as if I had been born to feel the wind.

A hundred years ago, schooners racedup and down the eastern seaboard to gettheir precious goods to market, and only fellinto near oblivion with the advent of fastersteamships and trains. Today, these majesticcraft are making a comeback, refurbishedand steadfast in plying a new styled cargothrough the water: passengers.

Although many vessels date back some

80 to 100 years, Angelique is one purposelybuilt in 1980 for the modern windjammingtrade. Based out of picturesque Camden,Maine, she is the only ketch in the associ-ation’s fleet and, fashioned after a sturdyEnglish fishing trawler of the late 1880s, hasseveral other distinguishing features. Theseinclude a raised helm, roomy deck space,an on-deck lounge and galley — warm ref-uge if the wind starts to bite — and 5,296square feet of red-hued sails, the result of atime-honoured weather-resistant treatmentinvolving tallow, tannic acid and red ochre.

Windjamming is the antithesis of big-boxcruises, and offers an intimate experiencefor sailing enthusiast and neophyte alike.Start by finding a sunny spot and watch thePenobscot Bay shore glide by as a movingtableau of historic lighthouses, whitewashedhomes with lobster pots stacked to the roof-line, wildlife of nesting puffins, seals, squawk-ing gulls and magnificent rocky outcrops thathave made the coastline legendary.

Chances are that at some point you’llrally to the first mate’s battle cry — “team-work is no work” — and will find yourselfhelping to raise the jib, hoist that rope, splice a line or furl the sail.

Even getting ashore is an involved pro-

cess, jumping into a skiff, grabbing an oar(unless you take a centre seat) and rowingto a village dock or a granite ledge orna-mented with barnacles, mussels and peri-winkles. Besides, participation helps workup an appetite for traditional, homestylecuisine (tasty and always plenty of it) andcertainly promotes a great night’s sleep insurprisingly comfortable, albeit tiny, cabins.

Another allure of windjamming is itsout-of-the-ordinary shore excursions toislands, coves and hamlets. There are placeslike Wooden Boat Harbor and its one-of-a-kind boat building school, North Haven, where galleries only accept cash or a prom-

ise that you’ll send payment later. Thenthere’s Pulpit Harbor (aka Calvet Habourfrom Angela Lansbury’s popular TV seriesMurder, She Wrote) and Cranberry Island, which you can traverse in 20 minutes toa beach strewn with white-banded “luckystones” — always a special place to viewspectacular sunsets, against which the entirecrew will conjure up a feast of lobster, baked beneath a swaddle of seaweed.

Experiencing the romance of a bygoneage is really the essence of any windjam-ming adventure. It invokes a freedom ofspirit that dwarfs sailing in any smallercraft, and you can’t help but release “theeveryday.” And in doing so, your imagina-tion will unfurl into the wind, from whereit might even evoke images of piratesclimbing the ratlines.

IF YOU GOTake a Cape Air flight to Rockport,

Maine, and pick up a short taxi ride toCamden Harbor. If you’re driving, cars canbe left in a secured parking lot. For details, check out www.angelique.com, and www.windjammerassociation.com.

Brothers unite in OT for Eagles’first win of the BCHL season

The Morley brothers connected forthe overtime winner in Surrey Eagles’first win of the season Saturday nightin Langley.

Eagles captain Tyler Morley scored25 seconds into OT on an assist byyounger brother Brandon Morley — a16-year-old rookie — for a 4-3 victoryover the Chiefs.

The B.C. Hockey League rivalssplit a home-and-home series to openthe season over the weekend, withLangley earning a 5-3 win Friday atSouth Surrey Arena.

Saturday, the Chiefs took the gameto the Eagles early, but were unableto solve a red-hot Surrey goaltenderVinny Lessard. The Eagles weatheredthe storm and netted the only goal ofthe first, a shorthanded effort fromRiley Sweeney.

In the second period, the Eaglesran into serious penalty trouble, thrice being down five-on-three.

Rookie head coach Matt Erhartpicked up his first career win behindthe bench. “The team did a great jobof killing penalties in the second,” hesaid, “and you need your goaltenderto be your best killer, and Vinny wasreally good.”

Brad McGowan scored twice forthe Eagles, while Josh Myers netted apair for the Chiefs just 1:58 apart inthe third to send it into overtime.

Next up for the Eagles is athree-game road trip to Nanaimo,Cowichan Valley and Powell Riverthis coming weekend. The team’snext home game is Wednesday, Sept.22 against Trail Smoke Eaters.

The weather was horrible Saturday night in Kamloops— and so were South Surrey Big Kahuna Rams.

The B.C. Junior Football team lost 13-5 to the Broncos, with the Rams’ offense suffering a major power outage.

The Broncos’ win moved the Interior squad into a third-place tie with the Rams, and it also gave the Broncos theirfirst three-win season in franchise history.

The Broncos played well defensively and earned pointsfrom a pair of field goals from Aaron Smit and a 15-yardtouchdown run by Spencer Martin.

Next up for the Rams is a home game Sunday, Sept. 19against the strong Okanagan Sun. Kickoff is 3 p.m. at SouthSurrey Athletic Park.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) hascompiled some compelling data on why weshould adopt safer, greener driving habits.

The latest statistics are very telling andpoint to a whole new mindset in the way wedrive. Studies show that the following fivedriving techniques can reduce your fuel costsby up to 25 per cent:

❚ Accelerate gently;❚ Maintain a steady speed;❚ Avoid high speeds;❚ Anticipate traffic;❚ Coast to decelerate. You should still combine errands, monitor

your fuel consumption, reduce idling, maintainproper tire inflation and vehicle maintenance, cut back on air conditioning use and lightenyour load; however, these five driving tech-niques will definitely put your wallet and theenvironment in the green.

NRCan has some very informative videosonline that walk you through fuel-efficientdriving, including the Auto$mart programtargeting novice drivers. You can find them atwww.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

Say “scrap yard” and some people conjure upimages of crushed cars, and piles of parts left aloneto rust with little concern for the environment, butnothing could be further from the truth. The realityis that scrap yards are better known as automotiverecyclers, and that’s exactly what they do – recycle.

Recyclers that are members of the AutomotiveRecyclers of Canada are committed to maintainingthe highest standards of environmental stewardshipwhen recycling vehicles. As the majority of an aver-age car’s content by weight can be recycled andhazardous liquids can be disposed of safely, recyc-

lers take the necessary steps to ensure that cars arepermanently retired so they don’t pollute again, and that cars are recycled in the most environ-mentally responsible way possible.

The drainage of operating fluids is the first step. All fluids are drained and stored for re-use orrecycling. Special equipment and methods are usedin order to prevent any groundwater contamina-tion.

The second step is the dismantling of parts andcomponents. After that, the unusable portion ofthe vehicle is crushed and sent to be shredded for

recovery. Any valuable metals are separated andreused to make new cars and other consumerproducts, reducing the demand for raw materials.

If you want to ensure that your car is perma-nently retired and responsibly recycled, participatein Retire Your Ride. The national program ensuresrecyclers have the most relevant information andtools necessary to prevent hazardous materialscontained in end-of-life vehicles from contaminat-ing our water, soil and air. More info is availableonline at www.retireyourride.ca.
