Project Scale Model

Page 3: Surface Area & Volume Unit

Main Content Standards

Measurement and Geometry2.0 Students compute the perimeter,

area, and volume of common geometric objects and use the results to find measures of less common objects. They know how perimeter, area, and volume are affected by changes of scale

Mathematical Reasoning2.0 Students use strategies, skills, and

concepts in finding solutions

Page 4: Surface Area & Volume Unit

Objectives

Know and be able to apply

necessary formulas to find surface

area and volume

Use scale factors to find new surface

areas and volumes

Use understanding of scale factors and apply it to

real-world situations

Assess the reasonableness of the solutions

to real-life situations

Identify steps & patterns used

to answer problems and apply them to newer, more

complex problems

Independently break down a

complex problem and

correctly progress

through the steps to solve it.

GoalsStudents

• Confidently & accurately calculate Surface Area and Volume for all 3-D solids.

• Understand pattern behind scales and unit conversions with respect to Surface Area and Volume.

Personal• Thoroughly gauge

students needs and address them accordingly.

Gauging Student Needs Assessment

Think-Pair-Share Review past lessons that

pertain to Surface Area Volume (Area & Perimeter)

Go over work with one other student; help each other correct and quiz one another

K-W-L Self-report from students about what they

know and don’t know Students have a say in the direction of

their learning

Essential Question

Question Purpose

How can using math improve

our lives?

1. To get students to think about where they use math in their life.

2. To get students to consider what life would be like if they never used math.

Unit Questions

Why would we find Surface Area in the real

world?

Why would we find Volume in the real world?

Content Questions

What does Surface Area mean, and what does Volume

mean? What are the different formulas for Surface Area and Volume?

What are the unit measurements for Surface Area and Volume?

What is a scale factor? What is the pattern of change in Surface Area and Volume when a

scale factor is used?

Project Summary

Assignment SkeletonWith a partner, find a 3-D solid object at home that you can replicate on a larger or smaller scale. Record its measurements, surface area, and volume.

• Students will convert measurements, surface area, and volume from cm to meters and kilometers.

• Students will use given scales to find the measurements, surface area, and volume of a solid that would be similar to theirs.

• Students will produce a scale model of their 3-D object.
