DescriptionInside of Rabats picturesque harbor is found the longmellow rights of Doura a sand bottom rivermouth wave thatrolls right along the north jetty Rabat is the capital of thecountry and a great town to hang out in with fantasticmarkets restaurants and a plethora of surf spots all withinmorning surf check drive distance Its also the area mostcrowded with local surfers - which means a handful spreadaround the various breaks mostly on weekends Doura iswhere most of them will be found teetering on the mellowrollers when the swell is small But in winter big swells arefrequent and the protected waves inside the harbor can be agood bet when winds are funky or the swell is big or sloppy

On the south side of the south jetty outside the harbor is aseries of reefs that offer more challenging surf with steeppeaks and fun rebound backwash Its also the site of theOudayas Surf Club - look for the only building on the beachwith the parking lot - founded by King Mohammed VI Bothspots can be checked from beside the medina walls at thetop of the hill Make sure to tip or pay the street side parkingattendants and your car will be safe while you surf The viewof the town from the lineup is fantastic And when youredone wander in the kasbah (fortress) over looking the breakand have an afternoon Casablanca Beer at the bar of LaCaravelle restaurant overlooking the breaks

DescriptionThe coast between Rabat and Casablanca is littered with reefsthat pick up heaps of winter swell The coast road runs withinsight of the beach but often you need to pick your way downdirt roads to the actual surf There are excellent - and largelyoverlooked by travelers - surf spots in this region making ita great alternative to the crowds around Taghazoute in thesouth The few locals know the spots and are usually friendlyto share directions and tips A little French and a friendlysmile helps enormously as most Moroccan surfers in the areaare curious and eager to meet travelers

DescriptionStill within daily driving of Rabat the right reef at Bouznika istypical of the reefs in the area but easier to find It is locatedbeside a luxury golf course tourist resort - nearly abandonedin the winter months A long reef juts out on the north endof a pretty crescent shaped beach with a fun to challengingright-hander off the tip Low tide is a must - the wave cannearly disappear at high tide Signs off the free highway markthe turnoff then bear right at the beach road behind thehouses until the dead end at the guard gate To check thepoint walk out to the beach where a crowd of fishermanpulls up their boats each morning with the days catchPaddle the long way out from the beach or pick your wayalong the super sharp rocks and jump off at the tip like thelocals do Beware of the beds of sea urchins on the bottomThe wave itself crumbles off the side of the rocks then zipsor rolls along into the bay depending on the size and swellwith a couple of sections followed by cutty options Can begreat Can be fun Generally blows out in the afternoonsWeekends can bring ten or so locals out but the bigger itgets the more it spreads out the crowd Bigger swells maytend to break wider and fatter unless the tide is dead low

DescriptionThe megalopolis of Casablanca one of Africas largest citiesoffers a different experience than expected when one thinksof Africa Huge and bustling with traffic jams andmega-malls and football stadiums Casablanca is thefinancial capital of the nation and in reality is far from thesleepy town imagined by Hollywood in the film of the samename A dizzy mix of old and new east and west it is hometo the both the largest mosque in Africa outside of Cairo aswell as home to one of the biggest McDonalds restaurants onthe continent Understandably like Rabat it is also home tothe upper crust of Moroccan society whose large homespopulate the chic beach neighborhood of Anfa on thebeaches south of downtown

While Casa - as the locals call it - is populous and right onthe coast there is great surf to be found within an hoursdrive north or south from Anfa and most of the spots arentcrowded Dar Bouazza is found about 40 minutes south ofthe Anfa neighborhood by coast road - watch for signs asyou go and look for the big point on the right as you driveIts one of Moroccos few lefthanders and while its usuallyfairly fat it can pack a punch and has some rippablesections holding big swells Weekends find the small localpack on it with some boogies but the crowd spreads out asthe size increases

DescriptionHalfway between Casablanca and Agadir the dingy port townof Safi can be depressing It is a major port and industrialtown set into a bend in the coast strikingly ugly especially ifyouve come from the charming town of Essaouria to thesouth It is a major sardine processing port and south oftown there is an enormous - enormous - phosphate factorythat is nearly a town-sized factory like something out of ascience fiction movie It is also historically one of the mainceramic centers and an afternoon wander through the smallceramic shops to see pots and bowls being made isinteresting The surf is great in Safi however and - as withmuch of the country - overlooked by travelers If you want tosurf epic reefs with no one out its a good bet that youllscore in Safi as there are few to no traveling surfers andplenty surf if you look a little This stretch of coast is holdingsome true gems for the searcher

Joust south of town and easily found by driving along thecoast is the right pointreef of Sidi Ghouzia Located in frontof some open lots in a residential area the set up looksperfect when you pull up a small cove with rights swingingaround and no one out Park in the dirt lot within sight ofyour car and paddle out from the inside The wave itself iscrumbly and forgiving with playful sections and room forlots of turns reminiscent of Lower Trestles Lower tides arebetter making the faces steeper and in the mornings whenit is glassy it can be great fun The well-defined reef can

Follow the coast south from Safi until you come to the hugefactory Pull up in the dirt lot in front and just in front is along reef of right-handers that picks up a lot of swell Thepaddle out from the rocky beach can be a bit of work whenthe swell is big but the big shifty hollow peaks are whatyoure dreaming of right now There are barrels and big facesfor lots of turns challenging enough for the best surfers and- as usual in northern Morocco - no one out

Staying in Safi is the best option which allows you to checkthe coast and other spots on the drive down The factory isdepressing and noisy and makes the water quality dubiousalthough it looks clean and green enough so its not an idealplace for your girl to sunbathe But if youre looking to getsome solid peaks and pull into a few heres the place

DescriptionThe first spot heading south as you round the headland ofCap Ghair is a zippy right-hander visible in the distance fromthe road From here south the prevailing winter winds blowoffshore making the area the capital of Moroccan surfing withseveral world-class waves within an hours drive of eachother all centered around the dull town of Taghazoute andits yearly influx of traveling surfers

The right pointbreak called The Boiler is named for the rustyhull of a ship that sits just underwater at the top of the pointits boiler visible and gurgling at low tide The wave is a quickrunner that breaks along the urchin-covered rocks with a lotof speed and punch Lower tides are best as they give it morezip but be careful at the paddle-out as the rocks are coveredwith sea urchins The place works from waist high todouble-overhead and bigger and when the swell is solid andthe crowds spread out over the regions various waves TheBoiler can offer a dream session of offshore winds andoverhead sets that will have you hooting your friends as youpaddle back up the point

Located on the far west end of the cape it picks up moreswell than the famed Anchor Point and is a good option if theswell is small Camping in the dirt on the cliff will have youout at dawn but theres nothing out there at night but stars

DescriptionVisible from the lineup at Anchor Point or from the dirt lotabove Mysteries Killers is the distant break at the top of theheadland Its said that it is named for the occasionalsightings of Killer Whales in the area but the wave itself isworthy of the name It is a long powerful right point thatcan handle the biggest swells and can be more challengingthan Anchor Points more groomed lines You can check itfrom the road up on the hill or watch it in the distance fromthe Mysteries lot

A long paddle from the sharp rocky beach to the lineupkeeps the crowds down and on big swells it can be a choreto get out there Better surfers and more serious ones willmake the paddle to avoid the crowds at Anchors and tochallenge themselves in the bomb sets On a good daybarrels can be had in the big shifty line up with long wallsand rippable sections

If its pumping drink a lot of water before you paddle out asyoull be out there all day and wont want to come in Its agreat wave thatll challenge the best of surfers

DescriptionMysteries is the wave on the northern back beach of AnchorPoint A dirt area atop the cliffs offers camping and in peakwinter holiday season can filled with more than fiftycampervans with license plates from Poland to PortugalAnchor Point is walking distance to the south Killers iswalking distance and visible to the north

The wave itself is one of the few waves in the area that workon higher tides A rock shelf reef that is exposed at thelowest tides it offers a rippable fun right similar to LowerTrestles and a left that can be decent and a nice changefrom all the right points youve been surfing Keep an eye onit in the afternoons as the crowd can ebb and flow and thetide changes can have it working at unexpected times so beready for the quick run out there

To reach it head down the trails on the cliffs and time ajump off from the rocks then paddle across the lineup andaround the shoulder The beginners like to surf it but themore experienced can pick off the gems by marking yourlineup and reading the shifts

A fun wave and it has its epic days with the right windswellcombos The dirt campground is full of trash and brokenbottles and new construction along the hilltop might soonreplace camping with condos Mingling with the travelingEuros on the cliff tops can be fun as youre sure to see them

Much of the town has built up around it and caters to thetraveling surfer Rooms are for rent from cheap to decent forlong and short term stays internet cafes are popping upalong with eating establishments that cater to Westernersand surf schools are attracting ever more beginners - oftenfrom Europes inland countries such as Germany andSwitzerland Unfortunately for this world-class break its alsocrowded and the changes from sleepy Moroccan village tosurf travel crossroads of the world have taken the adventureand experience of exotic Morocco out of the place It mightbe the Moroccan version of Rosarito BC Mexico withoutthe booze and strip clubs

On the other hand there are at least four world-class breakswithin driving distance so the crowd spreads out and epicsessions abound And Anchor Point can hold any size swellup to triple overhead and beyond making it the go to spotwhen the swell is macking

A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT FORECASTS MODELS AND SMOOTHIES

Models are similar to blenders If we want to make a smoothie we add all kinds of fruit juice andother great things into the blender to create our smoothie If we add something that is rotten well geta rotten smoothie The same goes for models Bad data in bad data out and well get a rotten forecastAs we know wave generation is entirely dependent on the winds and calculating the exact windvelocities directions and durations everywhere across the ocean is still an advancing scienceSometimes the wind data is wrong and if we always had perfect winds the models would probablynever miss a forecast

One advantage of surf forecasting versus other types of forecasting is the final result will always be thetrue measure of a forecasts accuracy The final swell size direction and swell period will all be clues tobacktrack and confirm how accurate the original storm wind data was that was entered into the modelThis method of validation allows us to tweak our LOLA models for better accuracy going forward Alsousing real-time data from satellites and buoys we can adjust the LOLA models on the fly to correct the



forecasts immediately and long before the swell arrives

But models can still be wrong from time to time or they can produce conflicting information betweenmodels And sometimes there are simply things that we as forecasters can see in the charts or otherdata that cant be clearly expressed in a model As a result the Surfline Forecast should always beviewed as the final word because it takes into account all of the variables including the times when themodels may be spitting out something that looks a little rotten

1 Pick the right surfing spots for your ability and attitude We need to be honest with ourselves aboutour ability and our intentions

2 Dont drop in on or snake your fellow surfer In other words do not catch a wave once another surferhas caught it by being in a deeper or more effective position at takeoff than you

3 When paddling out to or within a break its your responsibility to stay out of the way of riders onwaves Once a rider has selected and caught a wave all other surfers should do their best not tointerfere with his or her enjoyment of the wave

4 Learn to take turns We all want it for ourselves But were not alone which means sharing thewave-catching opportunities Give someone a wave and help to create a positive vibe in the lineup

5 In any surf session respect the pre-existing vibe in the lineup This holds true no matter your statusequipment or ability level Take your time and let a few waves go by to ease into the rotation and themindset of the other surfers

6 Always aid another surfer in trouble But dont put yourself in a situation over your head Two surfersin need of help are in much worse a state than one

7 When traveling always respect the local surfers and their rights and customs without forfeiting yourown right to a wave Take your time Avoid traveling in large numbers and try to time your sessionswhen the crowd may lighten up Let the locals set the pace

8 Do not use your surfing advantages to abuse fellow surfers This includes advantages such assurfboard length surfing fitness and skill local knowledge and authority and (lamest of all) physicalaggression and strength

9 At all times be responsible for your equipment and respectful of others A surfboard can be verydangerous to its owner and other surfers so take care anytime you bail your board

10 Relax and enjoy your surfing and that of your fellow surfer The presence of others in the water isan ongoing fact of life in lineups worldwide Accepting this is the key to a healthy flexible attitude inthe water More than anything else crowd tensions in the surf can be eased by our individual ability toflow through situations and react positively when its needed Above all else smile
