Surfing season in the Maldives:

The surfing season kicks off from the end of May through to the end of October – this is when there are the most waves but conditions can vary.

The biggest waves will be in July and August, and the smaller swell is from November to May.

Is it possible to paddle from the resort?

Yes, with the new improvements on the small island near Club Med Kani, the Ninja Surf break is now easily accessible from the resort. There will be some paddling required between the resort and the “surf departure” island, and it will take approximately 5 – 10 minutes to access the island, and then another 5 minutes to get to the waves. Please ensure you read the sign-posted information carefully before entering the water, there are sand bags in the water, but it is advisable that you bring booties with you as the reef can be rough. Booties are not sold nor are available for rent at Club Med Kani. To access other breaks, Club Med advises taking the boat for outings instead of paddling.

Because Club Med cares for your little ones

Club Med is very conscious of the safety of little guests as waves break on the reef. Therefore, kids will have to be at least 11 years old to be surfing near Club Med Kani. Also, you should feel confident that your kids know how to swim and are comfortable in the water. Club Med usually brings children to the "Baby Chicken" surfing spot where the wave is inside the reef meaning smaller and deeper water so less risk of getting hurt on the reef. And for kids taking beginner lessons, the surf instructor will not bring them out if the conditions are dangerous.

How to book your surf package?

For travel between 1June and 30 September (surfing season), you can pre-book via travel agent or book directly at the excursion counter in Club Med Kani. For travel between 1 October to 30 May, you can only book directly at the excursion counter at Club Med Kani as the surfing conditions might vary, with especially small and inconsistent conditions between November and February. To book the Do It Yourself option, book directly at the excursions counter the day before in Club Med Kani.

Why surf in the Maldives?

A surf destination on the rise, the Maldives provides a great range of left and right reef breaks which will leave any surfer super stoked. A bit more forgiving than Indonesia or Tahiti breaks, Maldivians reef break suit intermediate to advanced surfers best. Waves can range from a mellow 2 feet during the surf season (May-October) to a whopping 15 feet during the highest months (July-August). During the dry season, November to February, there might still be some waves around but this is outside the main swell period – so pack a board just in case of a nice surprise swell.

Equipment:

You can hire a board at Club Med or bring your own. If you surf regularly, Club Med would recommend bringing your own board as the hire range is small. If you'd like to hire, Club Med has a total of 7 boards available from a 6’8 hydrofish board to a 9’0 longboard. The surf excursion boats provided are speedboats, and you may have up to 10 people on the same boat with a minimum requirement of 4 persons for the trip to go ahead. Because of this, during surfing season, it is best to pre-book to ensure your spot and if there is less than 4 people booked on the surf excursion, Club Med will endeavor to find a way to get you out. On the boat, Club Med provides water and will also have a first aid box on hand, if needed. However, Club Med does not provide rash vests, wetsuits or sunscreen, so make sure you bring those with you.

Surf lessons for beginners

Beginners can also learn in how to surf in the Maldives! For a challenging and fun experience, Club Med also offers private and group lessons depending on your needs and comfort with surf lessons in in the lagoon and then on an easy surf break.

Private lessons: if you'd like a more in-depth experience and maximum training with an ISA-certified instructor. Group lessons: the outing will be for two beginners maximum, with one instructor. Club Med keeps this low number to ensure comfort and safety. Includes board hire, 1h30 in-lagoon lesson, and 2-hour outing.

Improving the surf experience at Kani

Surfers can now look forward to revamped direct access to the Ninja surf break, just a few minutes paddle from the Club Med Kani resort! An access platform has been installed to help surfers and onlookers reach the “surf departure” island safely from the resort. Patrons will be required to swim a short distance from the edge of the Club Med Kani resort to the access platform of the surf departure island, from here, they will walk a short distance along a path across the island to the new wooden deck and viewing platform that’s perfect to watch, relax and take photos. To access the break, there are also now sand bags in the water to protect your feet from the coral for easier and safer access to the waves.
