A Crabbing Story
The State Team had left to return to WA and now it was time to indulge in some other
activities and enjoy the attractions of Wallaroo SA. My previous attempts at crabbing had
only produced small results but enough to tantalise our tastebuds. Miniscule samples to
Mal and Jenny had them anticipating a decent feed of crabs, depending on our efforts. So,
with a couple of extra crab nets on loan, we ventured out onto the Wallaroo wharf and
adjoining jety and selected a spot to drop our nets. A relaxed atmosphere, some gentle
breezes and a warm sunny arvo put us all in cheery moods.
When baited up, the four nets headed for the water with the retaining ropes securely tied
to the wharf railing. Guess who forgot to put the bait bag lid on tight? Frantic casts got the
top back. The average wait of 10 minutes before pulling in the nets over the next half hour
produced a couple of keepers and a few small ones returned. Encouragement was given
to the Girls to be involved and laughter and joking filled the air.
I then decided to move one of the crab nets a bit further out onto the jetty and observing a
light switch assembly on one of the light poles, I decided to place the crab pot retaining
rope over the light switch. An expert Frisbee styled cast saw the crab net sail out, the
retaining rope flick off the pole switch and it joined the crab pot. PANIC!!! A mad dash
down the wharf, some grovelling to a fisherman to borrow a handline, a dash back, crazy
casts trying to hook up the floating rope with some success and the rope and pot is
brought back to the jetty. With a sigh of relief in not losing a loaned crab net, I asked Mal to
hold onto the rope while I cast out the net again. Another near perfect cast and the net
sailed out with the rope following it. “OOPS” said Mal. Many more frantic casts trying to
retrieve the crab pot rope with good quick results, but the girls are killing themselves
laughing in the background and giving unsympathetic comments on our capabilities.
Bloody rope tied securely.
A few more crabs caught and into the bucket, especially my “big one” which had me
crowing on my crab catching powers. Jenny suggested to Mal that a photo with him
holding onto the “big one” would be nice. Mal gingerly extracted “big one” from the bucket
and held it up ever so gently for a photo to be taken. Old butter fingers sat posing but the
“big one” objected to sharing the limelight with Mal and must have made a threatening
comment to Mal for Mal dropped the “big one” very quickly. The cranky “big one”
staggered around Mal‟s feet in a daze as Mal performed an old fashion Surfy Stomp style
of dance. The “big one”, feared of being stomped on, headed for the side of the jetty,
ignoring Mal‟s cursing at it to desist in its efforts to escape. The “big one” executed a near
perfect dive with one and a half somersaults before entering the water, one claw stuck up
and giving a message to Mal. “OOPS” said Mal......
The laughter and jesting lasted for a while as we consumed consoling cold drinks and
avoided Mal‟s grovelling. Harmony regained and our crab catching efforts continued.
“OOPS” NOT AGAIN......Mal calls out that his crab net‟s bait box lid has come off and is
floating away. Mal heads for the jetty ladder and climbs down to try and reach out for the
lid while I used a bucket to also collect the lid. Mal is unable to get the lid but I‟m
successful and haul it in, filling the bucket with sea water. Now, what do you do with
unwanted sea water? You pour it back into the sea, don‟t you? “Oops, sorry Mal, didn‟t
10
know you will still there!” Coughing and muttering, Mal came up topside, stepping over two
silly females rolling on the jetty killing themselves with hysterics. Well I did say sorry, but
somehow Mal did not think I was genuine, for I couldn‟t wipe the silly smirk off my face.
Mal‟s comment of “pigs arse” didn‟t seem to fit the moment!!!!!! It took a while for Mal to dry
out and our crabbing continued with our tally reaching ten crabs.
Then the laughter started again.
Lee was bent over the catch bucket checking our crab tally when Mal crept up and
touched Lee with a wet rag just inside her leg. Guess how high she jumped? Blimey, for a
moment she was speechless, but I can tell you from the look in her eye Mal came close to
trying to extract himself from a crab bait box with both hands and feet tied together.
Within the hour, our efforts dwindled in results, so we packed up and headed back to the
caravan park. The crabs were cooked and cooled, then feasted upon with pleasure and
crab juices ran down our chins and arms. The cold medicinal beverages completed and
enjoyable meal.
We sat back and reminisced on the afternoon‟s events and added them to our eternal
memories of great times together.

PRESIDENT‟S REPORT
I seem to have been in this position a number of times in the past and because I
was asked by quite a few members to nominate, I did; therefore your support is
appreciated.
We have a full committee elected for the ensuing year and I look forward to working
with them in a positive way to look after all our interests and to achieve. The committee will
be a committee of management, but you, the members, will be guiding them and the Club
in the direction you want to go.
If any member has any suggestions or ideas, don‟t sit on them; contact me or a
committee member so wherever possible, they will bear fruit!! A club is about everyone
working together to achieve, such as camaraderie, enjoyment, and learning in our three
main activities: fishing, casting, and social.
Clubs are mainly about people and we have at present a fine example of this. Our
Secretary, John Crompton, has followed up on a report that one of our senior members in
Jim Strong needed a little help because of a recent operation and another one happening
soon. Jim is on his own and of senior years and when John approached him with an offer
of help, Jim consented. John has organised cleaning, equipment for the house and co-
ordinated offers of help from quite a number of club members and friends. Two things
shine out here – a club member (John) helping out another club member and friend (Jim)
co-ordinating a lot of help and monetary offers of assistance from Jim‟s friends; and
secondly the large number of friends of Jim‟s from all walks of life helping out with offers of
help and monetary assistance. This is a positive way that they can say thank you to Jim for
fifty years plus in the club and work he has done and the positions he has held to make
our club what it is today. Bouquets to you all.
Geoff Raftis is to go to hospital for a few modifications and renovations, and we all
wish you all the best and hope to see you casting and fishing in the near future.
Bob Henderson (our new DCO) will be back in Perth late September and we look
forward to his return after he and his wife, Leonie, have travelled far and wide in their new
caravan. In the meantime, Peter Pekaar will officiate at the casting days ably assisted by
our new Assistant DCO, Allan Jones. Let‟s see you all attending our dry casting mornings
and compliment their efforts.
Over the next 12 months, there will be a number of projects undertaken and they
will materialise as time passes.
To get you all in a forward-thinking mode, I will start by getting you all to start
thinking about where you would like to go for a Club Safari or holiday for 2010. I have two
suggestions to make, but you may think of something else, but we need to make a
decision soon so that we can all start planning and making arrangements.
If you want a fishing safari, the location I would suggest is Cape Cuvier (Quobba
Station) north of Carnarvon. There is basic accommodation available and camping, and
most locations are accessible to standard vehicles. May/June/July are good months to fish
the area. Gas ballooning, lure and bottom fishing are the main types of activities. The
length of time would need to be at least a week, but if people work in small groups, they
can book their accommodation and length of stay to suit and from a safari point of view,
liaise and work together in the original planning and also of the activities up there.
From a Club point of view, a number of instruction periods could be used to the
benefit of all club members in what to use and how to use it, equipment, and bait. Think
about it.
12
The second would be a week‟s holiday/fishing at Esperance which would involve
wives and families. Need to look at when and whether we need to think about school
holidays (which depends on whether children are coming or not). The time of year I would
suggest is mid to late September when everything is green and the wildflowers are
abundant. People could arrange their own accommodation to suit. We could all work
together as a group and arrange fishing outings, picnics to different locations and scenic
trips of interest, nights out at a restaurant or two etc. Swap fishing ideas and knowledge.
Also when we are at Esperance, there will be the opportunity to liaise with the
Esperance Surf Casters if you so wish.
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Our next field day is at Emu Springs on 26-28 September and I am sure our FDO,
Mark Hansen, and his assistant, Peter Stoeckel, would like to see as many of you down
there as possible. There was a good write-up in the August Reel Talk, so use this as a
reference and start planning now. See you all down there.
I look forward to you all helping our new committee people by your participation in
fishing, casting & social activities.
Let‟s all be positive and not negative and I will endeavour to run tight meetings so
we have more time for instruction and social.
Instruction Period
As I asked at the AGM, I would like you to bring your tailor/mulloway mulie/bait type rig you
mainly use so we can learn from you as to why you make it that way, the benefits or
otherwise, and compare your rig to others presented. There is a lot to learn from other
members.

Rottnest Island Field Day Report - 15&16 August 2009
All week the weather reports were forecasting increasing storms,
gale force winds and huge seas. So when we received news that
the 6.00pm Friday ferry had been brought back to 3.00pm
because of the ferocity of the predicted storm, some re-arranging
of work schedules needed to take place in order to be at Rous
Head by 2.30pm. 11 of us gathered at the terminal, some in wet
weather gear, watching the swells crash over North Mole. Except
for our rods, we packed all our gear into the 2 aluminium cargo
cages provided by the ferry company and awaited departure, instead the ferry
master‟s voice came over the P.A. informing all and sundry that the departure was
delayed because of the weather and a further announcement will be made at 3.30.
The minutes ticked by while the
increasing winds raged around us, at
the appointed time the P.A. told us the ferry had been
cancelled for Friday and will depart 6.45am Saturday, so
we all went back home. The next morning saw us all back
there, but the weather seemed just as bad as Friday‟s, the
P.A. announced that there would be a slight delay as the
ferry had been holed during the night and it would take
about 10 minutes to effect a repair of the smashed window.
Just after 7.00am the ferry cast off and stopping briefly at
the E Shed to pick up more passengers, headed west through mountainous seas towards Rotto. The
crew offered spew bags for those that wanted them, then had to fetch more from the stores as they
proved to be very popular with the slightly green gilled brigade, several Surfcasters looked decidedly ill
but managed to “contain” themselves. Once we made landfall, the 2 keys were collected for our
accommodation and we wandered up to the bungalows. The cargo cages were delivered and quickly
unpacked then after a replenishing
feed the fishing gear was organised
in readiness for the 12.30 bus trip
to west end. Once out there it
became quite apparent that the
swell would be a problem. Ian
Taggert, Mal Harris, Lea Taylor,
Greg Keet, Peet and Sandra
Wessels shouldered reef-bags, backpacks
and rods went down to Wilsons to wet a
line and brave the swells. Wilsons
produced the usual 2 tailor and some nice
skippy, blackfish, breaksea cod, a pike and
Mal, in his “Quest for the Unusual”, caught and released a turtle. Meanwhile
Ian Cook, Vix Alexander, Charles [this is my first time at Rotto] Faure, Mark
and Wendy Hansen scrambled down the goat tracks to Tennis Courts as the
swells rolling across Radar and the Tailor hole made them too dangerous to
fish until later when the tide had dropped. The Tennis Courts offered herring,
wrasse, blackfish, tarwhine and breaksea cod. Cookie managed to break his
rod trying to pull the mouth
out of a wrasse. By 3.00pm
the tide had ebbed enough
to make Radar “safe” for
Mark, Cookie and, a bit
14
later, Lea and Charles to venture out and cast into the
surging seas at the reef‟s edge to catch some good
skippy, Mark managed to bag a nice one using
plastics on a 10/0 hook! The sun was heading close to
the horizon when Cookie started to hook-up on yellow
tail kingfish [YTK] using mulies on a baitcasting rig.
Both Mark and Lea had zero YTK luck using plastics.
Cookie‟s bouts with the numerous YTK had damaged
his shoulder so his fishing was finished that night.
Everyone made their way in the dark, back up
to the bus pick up area to shed sodden
wetsuits and don dry clothes for the trip back.
While waiting for our transportation Vix made
coffee and some “medicine”, courtesy of Dr
Jamieson, was added to “Irish” up the coffee,
which helped stave off the cold. The bus was
packed with all our stuff and by 8.00pm we
were on the road to warmth and dinner. The
rain drummed on the iron roof while we had
starters of cheese, paté and crackers. By
Sunday morning the weather had improved but
Cookie‟s shoulder hadn‟t, the bus picked 10 of us up at 10.00am and we disembarked and unpacked by
10.30, Mal, Vix, Ian, Greg, Charles and Lea started at Wilsons. The Wessels and Hansens climbed down
the limestone goat track to Tennis Courts to add more fish to their bags, wrasse seemed to be the
species of the day, but Peet and Sandra got onto some of the species that where there the previous day.
While people were out on the reef, crows and
seagulls got into tackle/bait bags looking for food
they devoured a full bag of mulies and a packet of
biscuits but didn‟t think much of the liquorice
allsorts and strew them around the rocks in disgust.
Around 2.00ish, people started to migrate in dribs
and drabs to Radar in readiness for the Yellow Tail
onslaught, apart from a few false alarms due to the
“suddenly carnivorous“ buff bream, we cast fruitlessly into the waters for what seemed a long time before
the first YTK struck about an hour before sunset. A few just undersized ones were caught and released,
many bust offs occurred and
Greg‟s rod succumbed to the brute
force for which these fish are
renowned. Right on dusk they
came, their tails could be seen
breaking through the surface, and
those fishermen with mulies in the
water were hit hard and often!
Darkness descended, and those
with their bag limit or had had
enough headed back to dry land to
clean their fish. Charles, while
trying to fetch his headlight out of
his reef-bag, was struck from
behind by an unseen wave and
15
had his brand new rod and
reel knocked from his grip and
washed into Davey Jones‟s
Locker never to be seen
again! Bugger! Well at least
he had bagged 2 nice YTK.
The weigh in was back at the
bungalows 15 minutes after
arrival, everyone weighed in
fish including 6 people with
YTK. 11 species were presented, Charles and Greg had two yellow tails each, well done chaps, in fact
one of Greg Keet‟s won him Best Scale Fish at 3.216kg. Malcolm Harris had Best Bag of Scale Fish with
exactly 10.00kg. In the Length Comp 12 species
added up to a total of 50.31 metres, Peet Wessels
10.83 metres was the winning total for the month.
Three surfcasters fished locally and caught one
whiting between them. Once the paper work was over
and happy snaps of the weekend‟s achievements
taken, dinner and showers beckoned.
Early Monday morning
we cleaned the
accommodation, the
Quokkas invited themselves in to inspect our Nelly bins before we packed
the crates into the cargo cages for the trip back. Once the Rods were
“Tubed” for their protection, everyone wandered
down to the bakery for breakfast/morning tea
and coffee [sans “medicine”] while the local
wildlife fossicked for titbits. The weather had
been on the improve since Sunday midday and
the ferry trip home was positively pleasurable as
compared to the one two days previous. Back at
Rous head we disembarked, collected our gear and bade our farewells.
Our next Field Day is a
long weekend down near
Augusta at Emu Springs; this venue has the absolute
best campsite of all our excursions and is 2WD
accessible to the camping grounds. The beach, on
the other hand, requires a serious 4WD, but big tailor
and mulloway have been bagged there. Because of
the currents and prevailing wind direction, many
interesting things are washed up for all those that
love a bit of beachcombing.

DRY CASTING REPORT
2 August 2009
By Peter Pekaar
Arriving at the oval on 2 August, we were treated to a beautiful, cloudless sky. The weather was
cool at first and warmed up to be a pleasant day. The winds were light north-easterly at the start of
the day, strengthening during the morning. The barometer was quite high, around 1,032.
This month, we welcomed three visitors: Charles Faure, Andrew Kymantas, and Gino Bird.
Double Handed Accuracy scores of note were Gary Gildersleeves – 169 points; Wendy Hansen
101 points; Charles Faure 101 points, which included a bull‟s eye on his first cast and this was the
second highest score in the Seniors.
The highest Single Handed Accuracy score was by George Holman with 29 points and the second
highest score was by Allan Jones with 25 points. There were four bull‟s eyes on the day – two in
D/H Accuracy by Charles and Terry Fuller; and two in S/H Accuracy by Eric Parker and Marcia
Pekaar.
Considering the average conditions, young Rhys Jones did well to cast 150 metres, which was the
longest 112g cast for the day, and Terry Willison had the longest 56g cast of the day with
134 metres.
Sections Winners
Seniors: Peter Pekaar 214 points
Veterans: Gary Gildersleeves 279 points
Ladies: Marcia Pekaar 173 points
Juniors: Holly Walker 80 points
Mini Juniors: Kaitlin Stoeckel 39 points
All members who attended on the day can take credit for their assistance with the set up and
retrieval of equipment. Thanks go to Greg Walker for putting the flags out and Holly Walker &
Kaitlin Stoeckel for retrieving them after a long day.
Our next casting date is 13 September 2009 when Seniors will be doing Accuracy first, then
Distance; Vets, Ladies & Juniors will be doing Distance first then Accuracy.
Straightest Centre Cast
During the normal casting in September, I will offer a free burger and drink to the caster with the
straightest centre cast, as determined by the markers and the laser operator. The distance of the
cast is irrelevant; what counts is who gets their sinker to land the closest to the centre line of the
court. A spike will be used to mark the casts which are deemed to be very central. The person
looking through the laser will determine the straightness to the central flag and the spike will be
moved appropriately. A record needs to be kept as to whose cast it was at the last movement of
the spike. In the event of a tie, both casters will receive a meal.
This is just a fun, social event. No points are to be awarded, so please keep it light hearted.
112g Open
After our regular casting in September we will have a 112g Open and we encourage everyone to
participate. Remember, you are welcome to cast with a weight up to and including 112g.

Dry Casting Results, 2 August 2009 These results have been prepared from the original hand written distances and scores recorded on the day. Marcia and Peter Pekaar copied the scores from the score
sheets into an electronic format, adjusted the distance scores for the 20 metre measurement setback, and cross checked all final figures against the original score sheets.
Terry Fuller used his computer system to process the results to calculate the points, add all together, sort into final score order, extract the section winners and year‟s best
as shown on the second page, and progressive scores for use at the end of the competition year.

SCAC website report for September 2009 Reel Talk.
The August Reel Talk had an article suggesting a sub-committee of club members be formed to consider the Club‟s requirements for the website, and that members be asked to volunteer for the sub-committee. I was away from Perth for 2 weeks but I have not yet had any response to that article or enquiries from anyone before or after that trip. The questions about the website will need to be addressed by the new Committee. The August Reel Talk has been placed on the website. I have not been provided with any other material for the website. The website as a reference source for information for members. The existing website has a lot of club information and reference material on it. Examples are the Constitution, Competition Rules, past Reel Talks, etc, etc. These are freely available to everyone, public and members. Every organisation faces the question:- How does it store all the current and past information needed by Club Members and Committee in a place where everyone who needs it can get access to it, know that they are using the very latest version, and that everyone is actually using the same version? A paper copy can be kept of everything, but that raises questions for this Club:- Kept where? Who keeps it all up to date? And how do other people get access and get a copy? This is an enormous amount of work, and often does not deliver as has been demonstrated many times. Email has made it possible to send electronic copies to other people. That then introduces questions about keeping the versions up to date, how can people find out if the version they have is the latest one, size of files and email limitations, etc. Many organisations have moved to keeping electronic copies in one central place, where the latest version is always available. Then different and extra questions come up. How do people get access? Who should have access? How is access controlled? And more. These are stored on what is effectively a private website which is not visible or accessible to unauthorised people or the public who may access other parts of the website. Passwords and/or some sort of encryption can be used for security. The good news is that it‟s all been done before, there‟s little new and most of the problems have been sorted out. The bad news is that someone has to do it – and that‟s more work for the website coordinator. A start on a central store for Club information. I joined the Committee in June 2009 and took on the job of “Minutes Secretary” to help the real Secretary, John Crompton. The General and Committee meetings are recorded electronically to help with the preparation of the minutes of the meetings. These recordings are made available to Committee members. Some were emailed, but some email services cannot accept the sizes of those files, and it is not good practice to send very large files via email, because that can “lock up” people‟s emails. So I have trialled placing these recordings and the various draft and final versions of the minutes on a private part of the Club website. Then Committee members can access that page and download and print whatever they want at any time to suit themselves. Paper copies are provided to those Committee members without Internet access. As additional security, I have password encrypted the private part of the page so that even if an unauthorised person accessed the page, they still cannot access the Club material. All Committee members have been given the password, which will be changed from time to time. For some, it‟s a new way of working in this electronic age. All Committee members need to do is keep the password and the page URL and then they have online, on demand access to lots of guaranteed up to date information they need to do their job. A similar approach could be used for storing information which needs to be reserved for Club Members eyes only. Members without Internet access can be handed or posted paper copies as at present. Terry Fuller, Website Editor.

Recfishwest report for Reel Talk September 2009 I was not able to attend the Club‟s August General Meeting due to a long planned 2 week fishing trip to Exmouth. That‟s a really tough job, but someone‟s got to do it. Anyway here‟s a report for the September Reel Talk.
1. West Coast and boat fishing licences. The hot topic in the last few weeks has been the reactions to the announcement of boat fishing licences State wide and demersal fishing licences for the West Coast, as covered in my last report. It‟s disappointing seeing some of the misinformation and misleading statements flying around from some people and organisations who know better, or who really should know better, particularly the emotive and misleading stuff such as the cost of children fishing. A new website http://www.fishingtaxgrab.com/ has been set up. It says “FishingTaxGrab.com is run by concerned fishing and boating families and businesses; the coordinators are Neil Bartholomaeus of Manjimup and Ben Patrick of Fremantle.” This says that it wants consultation with the community before the Government introduces fishing tax grabs, and urges people to write to their Member of Parliament. In Parliament, the Opposition has moved a disallowance motion about the licences. There are 30 pages of the debate in Hansard. Check out the confusion and the political statements. Link http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/Hansard%5Chansard.nsf/0/4bec59ef530f5a91c8257612002a670f/$FILE/A38%20S1%2020090812%20p5829c-5857a.pdf It's anyone's guess just now what will happen when it comes to the vote. Parliament does not sit again until Tuesday 8 September, so that's the very earliest that disallowance motion could be voted on. The agenda for those sittings is not yet available. The Premier and the Minister have stood firm that the 50% reduction in the mortality of fish due to recreational fishing is not negotiable, and have challenged the opponents to come up with alternatives to achieve that. Recfishwest has had meetings with the Dept of Fisheries and the Fisheries Minister's staff. Further meetings will be held, including with the other groups which have made comments recently. Watching the comments in the media etc and talking to some people, it is obvious there is a lot of confusion over boat licences and licences as part of demersal management - as predicted. Dept of Fisheries has held some country meetings to discuss all this, but only one (so far) in the metro area at the Marmion Angling Club, and that was restricted to members. It seems that Fisheries needs to do much more to get the right message out to more people, and also to answer some of the concerns raised by people. They should stress that the primary aim of the changes is to reduce fishing mortality so that stocks will recover and be adequate to take advantage of the occasional favourable conditions which allow good breeding success (recruitment), whenever that might occur. It is NOT a spawning season or spawning areas closure, although such closures could form part of the package of management measures. But these need to consider displaced effort and $dollar cost if commercial fishing compensation is involved, because that will raise a new complaint that commercial fishermen are getting compensated and recreation fishermen are just told "go way, there's no compensation for you". Also critical, the Dept of Fisheries needs to proactively answer the questions about management of commercial fishing and catches and ALL the causes of demersal mortality from ALL commercial fishing. For example, to provide convincing facts and figures and management details which show, and will convince the doubting public that the commercial wetline demersal catch is managed tightly enough so that commercial wetline fishing can still be allowed in any period when recreational fishing is closed or restricted. Yes, I know these are off the topic of recreational management, but they are being used as diversions to the real issues which are that THERE ARE NO EASY ANSWERS. These topics need to be answered with the facts. Ignoring them is not an option, because they will continue to rankle recreational fishermen who would see the commercial fishing during the closed season, and these "inequities" will continue to be used to criticize the recreational management packages and divert people from the real issues in those. The busy times continue!!

2. Changes to the Recfishwest Constitution A Special General Meeting was held on 24 August to vote on a revised Constitution for Recfishwest. The Constitution changes were approved by a large majority. Recfishwest members could put in postal votes, so there was a possibility that most would not actually attend the SGM. My special thanks to SCAC and RFW members John Crompton, Bev Grigo, Dave Maxted and George Holman who took the time to attend to help make sure there was a quorum at the meeting. The changes to the Constitution included:-
• Modifying the objects to reflect the current and future challenges facing Recfishwest. • Clarifying membership criteria for Associations. • Simplifying the disciplinary provisions while still allowing for natural justice. • Changing the Board composition by reducing the Public and Association members by one
each. • Adding 4 regional representatives to the Board being one each from Pilbara/Kimberley,
Gascoyne, West Coast and South Coast. • Including non-financial interests in the disclosure of interest provisions. • Appointing Association members to a two year term voted on by all members of

3. Recfishwest Membership Recfishwest is the peak body representing the interests of recreational fishers in Western Australia. Last year when the organization was under threat, recreational fishers supported Recfishwest, but we need you to continue that support. Decisions to be made in 2009 will affect future fishing opportunities for your children and grandchildren. Recfishwest intends meeting these challenges and assures you that we will be the most effective vehicle for getting your views heard in this crucial year. Recfishwest is your public voice whenever decisions which affect our fisheries, or access to them, are being made. We want you to become a member of Recfishwest or to renew your membership. Membership costs only $20 a year per person, $40 for families and $10 for seniors. Please contact the office on (08) 9246 3366, email to [email protected] or apply at the Recfishwest website, http://www.recfishwest.org.au/MembershipDet.htm Together we can make a difference!! This report has been prepared by Terry Fuller, your Recfishwest Board Member for the Australian Anglers Association working voluntarily on your behalf. AAA Report for September Reel Talk.
At the recent August meeting of the Association (which was also the Annual General Meeting),
individual Angler of the Year and Club awards were presented prior to the meeting.
Pat Shinnick (President) and Rick Cameron (Trophy Officer) and Diane McDonough (Secretary)
did a great job in preparing the presentation and the light supper, but the attendance of some of
the recipients was a little light on. Jim Strong, (Senior Patron) helped with the presentation and
made a short speech.
The State Estuary event is to be run from Troy Park, Melville, and fished in the Swan River on
28/29 November 2009. There should be another meeting of the AAA organising group prior to the
event and they would like to see some Surfcasters club members present.
The State Boating Championships are to be hosted by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing Club on
Saturday 27 March 2010, with Sunday 28 March as a backup date if the weather is not suitable on
the Saturday. Pat Shinnick chaired a meeting of the boating group this month at which the forward
planning was done and also the fisheries management issues.
No one has been forthcoming to run the State Dry Casting Championships which are usually held
on the last Sunday in October.
Chas Riegert gave notice of a motion from the floor, seconded by Ian Cook, to delete the Individual
Artificial Bait event out of the State Dry Casting event. In accordance with AAAWA procedures,
there will be discussion on this motion at the September Delegates meeting and voting at the
October Delegates meeting. Casters need to give this serious thought as the convention has been
that any rule changes for each of the competitions should be recommended to the Association by
the group representing that activity.
The election of officers was then held after Pat Shinnick read out a well prepared President‟s report
which shows the amount of work he has done for us all.
As in recent years, it was difficult to get anyone to nominate for a position in AAAWA. After a
considerable length of time and lack of volunteers, Pat agreed to take the chair for another year to
keep the Association afloat. George Holman became Senior Vice President and Peter Pekaar
Junior Vice President.
As there were no takers for Secretary or Treasurer, Diane McDonough was appointed again as
paid Secretary/Treasurer. Marcia Pekaar offered to take the position of Assistant Secretary. The
Trophy Officer portfolio was taken on by Don Cox and Competition Officer was taken by Jason
Pember. Recorder is Ian Cook.
Terry Fuller was re-elected as AAAWA‟s Recfishwest Board member with Pat Shinnick as proxy.
Pat thanked the people who put their hands up to keep the Association going, and looked forward
to promoting the Association and its activities. He would like to see Fishing Clinics run around July
2010 if we can get the support of enough workers to organise, promote and publicise these, not
just help on the nights.
George Holman.

Recipe for „Baked Fish‟
Fish 4 Fish Fillets with skin on one side. Eg: snapper or blue-cod 1 Stalk Lemongrass 100 g Ginger 1 Red chilli optional 1 Lime zested & juiced
Stir Fry 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil or olive oil 2 Stalks spring onions 1 small red capsicum 2 bunches Bok choy or choy sum 1 daikon radish 1 punnet Baby Corn Mint Coriander Thai Basil
Sauce 1 teaspoon Oyster sauce 1 teaspoon Fish sauce 1 teaspoon Soy sauce Juice of 1 Lime 1 Garlic Clove finely chopped
Method Place fish in alfoil. Slice ginger, lemongrass, chilli up finely and scatter over fish with

through. Combine oyster, fish, soy sauce and garlic with lime juice and add to vegetables. Toss through and add asian greens and herbs at last minute. Toss and serve. Place stir fry vegetables in the centre of you plate. Lay fish across the top –
garnishing with fresh herbs and a wedge of lime. Serves 4
Editor‟s Notes
Well, I‟m still here and hoping that your Reel Talk magazine will be enjoyable and
informative while I am in charge of it!!! I found this recipe in Mum‟s hand written notes –
she has no idea where it came from! If anyone has some tasty fish recipes that they would
like to share, please email them to me and they will be fitted into the Reel Talk whenever
possible.
Bob Henderson sent an enjoyable tale about crabbing – I just wonder how many
„medicinal‟ sips were taken prior to the event!
Enjoy your magazine
