Sure Shot B, owned by Charles Forbes, Jr. and Tommy Hays, and trained by John Stinebaugh,

proved best in the Grade 1, $1,158,941 Texas Classic Futurity over a fast track at Lone Star Park Saturday night.

With Salvador Martinez in the irons, the Texas-bred son of Stoli, out of the Dean Miracle mare She a Miracle, was sharp from the gate and stayed strong to the fi nish in covering the 400-yard distance in 19.425 seconds, earning a speed index of 101. Algorith-mic fi nished a half-length behind in second, and it was another half-length back to post time favorite Special Royal Corona in third.

“This was by far the toughest futurity I’ve ever seen, the overall fi eld of horses,” said winning trainer John Stinebaugh. “But fi rst I want to say hi to Jacky Martin (recently injured rider who has won the Texas Classic Futurity a record three times). Without Jacky, this horse might not have made it this far.”

Added winning co-owner Tommy Hays, “He had one race where he had a little trouble; otherwise, he’s never been beaten when he’s left the gate. I want to thank Jacky Martin and John

(Stinebaugh). They did a great job bringing this horse along. We thought he was a superstar all along.”

In taking home the top prize in the richest race in Texas horse racing, Sure Shot B earned $501,163 to increase his career earnings to $532,213 and improved his race record to fi ve wins from six starts.

Sure Shot B paid $20, $8.20 and

$6.80, Algorithmic returned $35.20 and $15.60, and Special Royal Corona paid $9 to show. The Long Knife, Jess a Comment, Sixes Streak, Fast Prize Jordan, Tee Cos, Linda Tee Fire, and Dm Strait Up completed the order of fi nish.

Cold Cash 123, owned by T. Bill Stables Inc. and trained by Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath,

overcame a slow start to win the 19th running of the Grade 1, $335,631 Texas Classic Derby over a fast track at Lone

Star Park Saturday night.  Ridden by Joe Martinez, the Mich-

igan-bred son of Oak Tree Special, out of the Takin On the Cash mare Hot Cash 123, was a step slow out of the gate but fi nished fast to complete the 440-yard

assignment in 21.168 seconds, earning a Speed Index of 103. The Printing Press fi nished three-quarters of a length be-hind in second, and it was a nose back to I See Candy Paint in third.

“He still didn’t break like he should, but they left him a place to run,” said winning trainer Dwayne “Sleepy” Gil-breath. “He’s a very fast horse when he gets to show it.”

With the win, Cold Cash 123 im-proved his record to eight wins from 13 starts, and the $149,356 winner’s share of the purse increased his career earn-ings to $806,312.

Cold Cash 123 paid $7, $4 and $3, runner-up The Printing Press returned $6.20, $4.40, and I See Candy Paint paid $5.20 for show. Llano Teller, Executive Prince, Endless Ocean, First Prize Stone, Jumpn Shake, Down Rite Royal and Coronas Allure completed the order of fi nish.

Corner K Quarter Horses, LLC’s homebred Sumokin, a 28-1 long shot, sprinted to an early

lead and held on by a neck margin for the biggest win of her career in the Restricted Grade 3, $426,624 Black Gold Championship on Saturday afternoon at Will Rogers Downs.

The Black Gold Championship is the ultimate race in the Black Gold program for participating stallions.

Veteran Larry Payne guided Sumokin to the win in :19.808 for 400 yards. Katil-lac Man was a neck back for second with the stallion Country Chicks Man siring the top two fi nishers. Third-place runner Easydoesitcindy was another neck back as was the top fi nisher from six fi nalists from the Eddie Willis barn.

The Luis Villafranco-trained Sumokin was sent off at long odds after a fourth-place fi nish in her trial, however she has shown the past class to compete at this level. The gray fi lly qualifi ed for the Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity and just two starts ago raced in the fi nals of the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity.

Gregory Cullum’s Katillac Man closed with a rush to fi nish second for trainer Frank Cooper. The runner-up fi nish kept his recent consistent record intact. He reeled off four wins before fi nishing sec-ond in his Black Gold Championship trial. That winning streak was highlighted by his win in the Iowa Double Gold Futurity at Prairie Meadows.

Abel Flores’ Easydoesitcindy, a daugh-

ter of Scrutinizer, gained her fi rst stakes placing and came off a trial win.

In the $61,760 Black Gold Derby, the always dangerous Freighttrain B com-pleted the Black Gold Futurity-Derby double with a one length win under jockey Jimmy Brooks.

James Sills and Ger-ald Swindell’s Freight-train B opened by a clear advantage and rolled to a one-length win in :19.681 for the 400 yards. Favored Barackazoom was second by one-half

length over Pica Wild Rose. A son of PYC Paint Your Wagon,

Freighttrain B scored his fi fth win from eight 2011 starts after ending his 2010 season with his narrow win in the Black Gold Championship Futurity.

Freighttrain B won four straight races at Remington Park last spring, including the Oklahoma Derby, before a fourth-place fi nish as the odds-on favorite in the $286,000 Heritage Place Derby. The Willis-trainee came off a seventh-place fi nish in the Dash For Cash Derby.

ValorF A R M

By Martha Claussen

Valor Farm, located in Pilot Point, Texas, nestled in the rolling hills north of Dallas, has a revered

reputation as one of the fi nest breeding establishments in the country.

The history of Valor Farm begins with its owner, Clarence Scharbauer Jr., and his late wife, Dorothy Turner Scharbauer. Dorothy Scharbauer grew up in a racing family and had the thrill of watching her father, Fred Turner, win the 1959 Kentucky Derby with Tomy Lee. With the goal of winning another Kentucky Derby, the Scharbauers began buying Thoroughbred yearlings in 1984. In 1987, another dream came true when the legendary Alysheba, triumphed on the fi rst Saturday in May. Enshrined in the Hall of Fame, Alysheba went on to win the Preakness Stakes and six additional Grade 1 stakes, including the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He won 11 of his 26 career starts, bankrolling $6,679,242.

Scharbauer, a third-generation Texas horseman and rancher, was a partner in Oklahoma Stud, a breeding farm in Purcell, Okla. The group -- consisting of Dr. John Beall, DVM, World Champion Cowboy Louis Brooks Sr., racing insiders Joe L. and Joe F. Gary from Oklahoma and, Jack McReynolds, also of Oklahoma -- purchased the farm in 1974. Scharbauer, a native Texan from Midland, was encour-aged that pari-mutuel racing would be approved in Texas and wanted to fi nd a property in the Lone Star State.

Ken Carson, who graduated from Texas A&M, has been the longtime man-ager of Valor Farm.

“Barry Wood of Oklahoma Stud spot-ted the land and made the recomenda-tion to Mr. Scharbauer,” Carson said.

The heavily wooded area was named “Pilot Point” for the proliferation of tim-berline trees that served as a landmark to travelers in Denton County. Plotted in 1853, Pilot Point, Texas, boasted lush greenery and hilly terrain.

Scharbauer purchased 393 acres and, with Wood as the architect, the barns and

18 miles of fence were completed in just over two years.

“Mr. Scharbauer is a Texan to the core,” Carson said. “He is so dedicated and has been for so long. He loves his horses and has always wanted the best, in his people, in the feed, in the general care for the animal.”

Dorothy Scharbauer passed away in 2005, and is fondly remembered for her passion and love of horses.

“Dorothy exuded class in every aspect of her life,” recalled Dave Hooper, execu-tive director of the Texas Thoroughbred Association. “She was extremely well spoken, impeccably dressed, and loved her horses. Both she and Clarence were unmatched in their enthusiasm for own-ing and breeding racehorses.”

Precocious talentMany of the Valor Farms homebreds

have done exceptionally well as 2-year-olds. Hadif One was the 1995 TTA Cham-pion 2-year-old colt/gelding. Gold Coyote was the recipient of the same award in 2007 as another early-maturing Texas-bred juvenile. He won two stakes at Lone Star

Park, crushing his rivals with a 10-length score in the $125,000 Staunch Avenger division of the Texas Stallion Stakes. Gold Coyote returned weeks later to win the $70,000 Middleground Breeders’ Cup Stakes against open company and was named Horse of the Meet at Lone Star. His sire, Gold Legend, produced another champion racehorse, Coyote Legend, who won the 2009 Groovy Stakes for 2-year-old Texas-breds and was honored as TTA Champion 3-year-old colt/gelding.

The newest rising star in the Valor Farm camp is Sword Trick, a son of Early Flyer out of the Hadif mare, Hadif Cat. Scharbauer’s homebred Sword Trick, dom-inated the fi rst two races of the 2011Texas Stallion Stakes Series. He recently stepped up to open company in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park. Despite a fi fth-place showing, he has won $136,800 and remains the current point leader in the TTA Champions Point Stand-ing for top Texas-bred 2-year-old colt/

gelding.Carson acknowledges that there are

few, if any, opportunities for horses to run 10 furlongs in Texas.

“Sword Trick is a good example of a solid horse ready to run early,” said Carson. “We are not breeding for a mile and a half, but many of our horses do excel at two turns.”

“Ken has recognized that there is a great emphasis on 2-year-old racing in Texas,” Hooper said. “The Texas Stallion series, which begins with the 5-1/2 furlong TTA Sales Futurity offers a nice progres-sion of distances with lucrative purses.”

Successful affiliation for trainer Bret Calhoun

Bret Calhoun admits that Clarence Scharbauer Jr. has been pivotal to his career. The 47-year-old Texan reached national prominence in 2010, when he saddled two Breeders’ Cup winners, Dubai Majesty and Chamberlain Bridge. He has a longstanding relationship with Schar-bauer and has tremendous respect for the quality of horses bred at Valor Farm.

“They do a heck of a job breeding and raising their foals,” said Calhoun. “The farm is a manicured showplace with tremen-dous pastures. By the time I get them, they are big, robust, strong, with obvious correct conformation.”

In addition to his breeding exper-tise, Calhoun credits Scharbauer with his willingness to pick some nice yearlings in the sale ring. In 2007, Scharbauer signed a $600,000 ticket for an A.P. Indy colt, In-dygo Mountain at the Keeneland Septem-ber Yearling Sale.

“He and Ken go to the sales and spend money on top caliber yearlings,” said Calhoun. “It’s a big thrill to get to train

A.P. Indy colts and even a half-sister to Afleet Alex.”

Indygo Mountain broke his maiden at Churchill Downs on Nov. 19, 2008. It was just his second start, but he relished the

stretchout to a mile, drawing off to a 6-1/4 length score.

“We thought this might be our Ken-tucky Derby contender,” recalled Calhoun. “We took him to Fair Grounds for the LeComte and Risen Star, but he developed foot troubles and we had to take time off. Unfortunately, a throat issue followed and we had to retire him.”

Indygo Mountain has joined the im-pressive roster of stallions at Valor Farm.

Stallions rank highly in Texas and on a national level

As much as Scharbauer loves his racehorses, he takes tremendous pride in the breeding program at Valor Farm. Cur-rently, his stallion roster includes Wimble-don, winner of the 2004 Louisiana Derby, Magic Cat, Early Flyer, Silver City and My Golden Song.

My Golden Song, a son of Unbridled’s Song, produced his first stakes winner this year when Cowgirl N Up won the $100,000 Darby’s Daughter Texas Stallion Stakes at Retama Park on Sept. 24. The

filly is out of the Wayne’s Crane mare Pure Mischief, who is also the dam of multiple stakes-winner Aces N Kings, a gelding by another Valor Farm stallion, Jet Phone.

Jet Phone stands stud at Valor Farm in 2011. The son of Phone Trick was bred and raced by Scharbauer. Jet Phone produced the multiple stakes winner, Aces N Kings who won five of six starts as a 2-year-old

An exemplary list of former Valor Farm stallions includes Devious Course, Festival of Light, Gold Legend, Gold Regent, Hadif, Marfa, Rare Brick and Quarter Horse stal-lions Sixarun and Vital Class.

Hadif was an exceptional sire for Valor Farm, ranking in the top echelon of Texas sires, which include Valid Expectations, Sunny’s Halo, Naevus and Marfa.

Hadif was a Kentucky-bred son of Clever Trick, who won the 1990 Phoenix Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Keeneland as well as the 1991 Neartic Handicap at Woodbine.

“I was always a Clever Trick fan,” said Carson. “I followed his races in Kentucky and New York. When Hadif ran third in the Laurel Dash, Clarence and I were both interested in his potential as a stallion.”

Hadif stood at Oklahoma Stud begin-ning in 1992 and was sent to Valor Farm the following year. He was prolific from the beginning. In his first year, he had 13 live foals and three stakes winners, includ-ing Texas champion 2-year-old Hadif One.

“He has some absolutely incredibly fast runners,” said Carson. “His foals would be yelling before they got out of the mare. All were good looking; some could get a mile, but at 5-1/2 to six furlongs, they were deadly.”

Hadif sired 22 stakes winners and 30 other racehorses who earned black-type.

He was pensioned from stud in 2006 after producing earners of more than $12.5 million.

As with many of the retired Scharbauer racehorses, including Sixarun (QH), and broodmares Running Victory and Stalwart Sal, they live the life of luxury in the pristine pastures of Valor Farm. Sadly, last September, Hadif died. Carson as well as every staff member was greatly saddened by his passing.

Strong supporter of the American Quarter Horse Association

Scharbauer, has been involved with both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing and breed-ing for over four decades. A former president of the American Quarter Horse Association, he was induct-ed into the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1992. He made a gener-ous endowment of $2 million to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. He and Dorothy had previously donated $500,000.

Texas proudDave Hooper, executive direc-

tor of the Texas Thoroughbred As-sociation (TTA), credits Scharbauer and Carson for their sustained commitment to the Lone Star State.

“Valor Farms and Will Farish’s Lanes End in Hempstead are two of the strongest farms in Texas,” Hooper said. “They are true Texans

and want to see breeding and rac-ing succeed here.”

Carson serves on the execu-tive committee of the Texas Thor-oughbred Association, and hopes for the legislative changes that have fueled the economies of bor-dering states Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Should the tide change, both racing and breeding in the Lone Star state could rival Kentucky, California, New York and Florida.

“Clarence is a Texan through and through,” Hooper said. “The magnitude and beauty of Valor Farm is a sight to behold. If you could pack it up and ship it to the Blue Grass breeding farms of Lex-ington, it would fit like a glove.”

Martha Claussen has been promi-nent in the Texas racing industry since 1997 as a publicist, writer and handicapper.

NOV. 14, 2011Sunland Park, NM‘Gateway to Greatness’ Sunland Park’s prestige grows as live racing nearsBy Ray Sanchez

Horses and jockeys just keep adding to the prestige of Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Winning or even finishing in the money in a Breeders’ Cup race is quite a feat and another horse that ran at Sun-land this year accomplished that feat last week. And he did it in the biggest Breeders’ Cup race of all.

But wait. What, some of you less familiar with horse racing might ask, is the Breed-ers’ Cup? I like to refer to it as the World Championships of Thoroughbred horse racing. The best horses, both male and female, from throughout the country and beyond com-pete in different age groups and different distances to determine the best in each category. It’s such a big event it takes two days to hold all the races.

Most of the races carry purses of from $1 million to $5 million and the possibilities of future earnings in breeding and other factors by doing well are endless.

The biggest of the races is the Breeders’ Cup Clas-sic at a mile and a quarter. That’s because it’s open to all 3-year-old and up Thorough-breds regardless of age or sex. Only the mightiest of the mighty run in that one. There were 14 powerful entries in that race this year. It included Horse of the Year contender

Uncle Mo.Ruler on Ice, who finished

third in the Sunland Derby last spring, dared to enter. And oh, what a race he ran. With a little racing luck, the youngster (3 years old) ridden by former Sunland jockey Gar-rett Gomez, might very well have won it.

Ruler On Ice was kept on the rail, saving ground, through most of the race and when the horses hit the stretch he made his move. The rail seemed open but suddenly it closed and Ruler on Ice had nowhere to go. Gomez smartly moved him to his right but lost a precious fraction of a second in the process. There was little room but Ruler on Ice somehow squeezed through to finish a fighting third.

Despite his long odds, Ruler on Ice finished ahead of 11 other great runners, includ-ing Uncle Mo, and returned $8.90 to show.

The winner? It was another longshot and it was ridden by another jockey who got his start at Sunland. That was 4-year-old Drosselmeyer ridden by Mike Smith, who has also become one of the country’s greatest riders.

Just this year, horses from Sunland have won the Belmont Stakes (Ruler on Ice), finished third in the Preakness (Astrology) and finished first in the Kentucky Oaks (Plum Pretty).

And let’s not forget Sun-land’s Mine That Bird winning the Kentucky Derby in 2009 or Island Fashion who after winning the Sunland Oaks in 2003 went on to win several Grade 1 races around the

country. Now Sunland has a third-

place finisher in the biggest race of all, the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Jockeys like Gomez, Smith and even aging Pat Valenzuela are keeping the spirit of Sunland alive. And then there’s Jerry Bailey, who after a great riding career that started at Sunland, is now an analyst on national television.

All of which brings to mind that the live horse rac-ing season at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is less than a month away.

Horsemen and horses are already moving into the area to prepare for the Dec. 6

opening. There will be racing on Tuesdays, Fridays, Satur-days and Sundays through April 17.

As usual, highlight of the season will be the $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby on March 25.

The track’s motto this year is “Gateway to Greatness.” Ruler On Ice has proven – again – that the track indeed deserves that designation.

1 Go Man Go Handicap after testing positive for Clenb-uterol according to an official ruling (#235) of the Board of Stewards at Los Alamitos Race Course released on Friday, Nov. 11. Stewards George Slender, Albert Christensen and James Dreyer acted upon a report from the University of California Davis of an official testing of the blood and urine sample taken from Freaky im-mediately following the race.

The ruling also orders that Freaky be disqualified from all purse monies earned in said race (the ninth race on Sept. 11) in accordance with the California Horse Racing Board Rule #1859.5 (disqualification upon positive test). All purse monies earned by Freaky’s owner, trainer and jockey in that race has been ordered to be returned to the paymaster of purses at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The revised order of finish now makes Armando Leon’s Snitcher the new official first-place finisher of the Go Man Go. Snitcher won the Grade 1 Vessels Matu-rity earlier this year and has a berth to compete in this year’s $750,000 Champion of Champions. Stern Ranches’ Chivalry SR, who won the Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap earlier this year, is the new second-place finisher in the Go Man Go. El Primero Del Ano Derby winner PK Fire is the new third-place finisher while Los Alamitos Winter Champion-ship winner Good Reason SA has been moved up from fifth to fourth place. Divide The Cash, Sparky E Boy, Shining First Dash, Pepe El Trueno and Astreakinson are now the official fifth- through ninth-place finishers in the race. The ruling does not affect the

pari-mutuel payoffs. For more info, please call

NOV. 13, 2011Inglewood, CACompari, Mr Gruff return in Night Mover Friday

Compari, whose stakes victories include the 2009 Snow Chief, will make his first start in more than six months in the $60,000 Night Mover Friday night at Hollywood Park.

The Night Mover, which will be run at 6 furlongs on turf, is the seventh of eight races. Post time is 7:05 p.m. At the conclusion of the program – approximately 10:30 p.m. – a concert starring Rebelution will begin at the North Park Lawn.

Owned by breeders John Harris, John Nicoletti and Don Valpredo and trained by Mar-ty Jones, Compari has been away since finishing fourth as the even-money favorite in a $72,600 allowance over the Hollywood Park grass May 8.

A California-bred son of Redattore and the Dixieland Band mare Southern Charm, the 5-year-old gelding has won six of 11 and earned $443,320. After his 1 ¾ length victory in the Snow Chief, the feature attraction of Califor-nia Gold Rush Day, Compari followed with stakes wins at Santa Anita in the Sensational Star, Crystal Water and Grade 2 Arcadia Handicap.

He has won five of eight on turf. One of those victories came at Hollywood Park as he captured a $44,080 allowance by two lengths Dec. 17, 2009.

Another quality gelding returning after being side-lined is Mr Gruff. A two-time winner of the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita,

the 7-year-old Mr. Greeley gelding out of the Clever Trick mare Ruff hasn’t started since finishing 16th in the Group 2 Al Quoz Sprint March 26 at Meydan Race Course in the United Arab Emirates.

Trained by Ron Ellis for owner Gary Broad, Mr Gruff has won five of 10 and banked $259,680. All of his wins have come in eight races on turf.

The winner of the Harry Henson Stakes April 21 in his sole appearance on the turf at Hollywood Park, Ain’t No Other will be seeking his seventh lifetime win for owner-breeder Tommy Town Thoroughbreds.

Trained by Steve Miyadi, the 3-year-old Old Topper gelding out of the Shadeed mare Miami Margie has started 11 times and banked $214,243.

Al Instante will be aiming for his third win in his last four starts for Green Grass Stables and trainer Ruben Carde-nas. The Chilean bred son of Caesarion and the Carson City mare Alphagram has won sev-en of 13 and earned $109.378. The 4-year-old is 2-for-5 in the United States.

One of two females in the lineup is A Jealous Woman, who hasn’t raced since finish-ing third in the 2010 Irish O’Brien Stakes for trainer Bill Spawr 20 months ago at Santa Anita.

Owned by Three Cent Stable and now in the barn of Francis Meza, the 5-year-old daughter of Muqtarib and the Fly So Free mare Miss Free Bird has four wins in six attempts and a bankroll of $150,080. She is undefeated in two races over the Holly-wood Park grass, both at the Night Mover distance.

Claimed for $62,500 Oct. 22, Lt. Hopeful will be mak-

ing his initial appearance for owner Frank Scardino and trainer Mike Mitchell.

A 5-year-old Bernstein gelding out of the Bright Launch mare Bright Orange, Lt. Hopeful has won three of 18 while earning $135,058. A win in the Night Mover would be his first on turf. He is 0-for-9 on the surface, finishing second once and third twice. Both of his third-place finishes were at Hollywood Park.

Ash Zee, a 4-year-old Exchange Rate filly out of the Tactical Cat mare Wickedly Wise, shortens up after finish-ing fifth in the Grade 2 Las Palmas Nov. 6 at Santa Anita.

Owned by Robert S. Evans and trained by Neil Drysdale, Ash Zee has won three of nine with earnings of $145,684.

A double winner over the local grass, Sirocco Strike returns to turf after finishing fifth and third in two starts at the recent Santa Anita season. The 4-year-old son of Forestry and the Smart Strike mare Wishful Splendor is 2-for-10 with $85,280 in earnings for owner Truline Racing and trainer Bob Troeger.

Owned by North Ameri-can Thoroughbred Racing and trained by Troy Taylor, St Liams Halo will be mak-ing his California debut. The 4-year-old Saint Liam gelding out of the Broad Brush mare Foolishly has won four of 11 and banked $130,999 while competing in Louisiana, Il-linois and Canada.

He arrives at Hollywood Park having won three of four in 2011 at Hastings Park in Vancouver. He hasn’t started since July 17.

The Florida bred has never been worse than second in five races on grass, winning once.

Opelousas, LAField is set for $517,844 LQHBA Futurity at Evangeline Downs

A talented and evenly matched field of nine is set to square off in the Grade 1 (Res) LQHBA Futurity, the richest race of the year with a purse of $517,844 at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino on Saturday, Nov. 19.

The LQHBA Futurity, for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana, will be run at the distance of 400 yards and features a field on nine who advanced from the more than 140 youngsters who took part in a total of 15 trials held just two weeks ago. With a purse of more than $517,000, this marks the sixth consecutive running of the LQHBA Futurity with a purse in ex-cess of a half-million dollars. Note: Tylers Big Bird qualified for the final but was not entered and therefore will receive the 10th-place finisher’s prize money. In addition to this event, there are three other stakes races on the rich 11-race program (the stakes races will be run as the fifth, seventh, ninth, & 10th races) each to be run at the same distance of 400 yards. They are the $91,384.35 Invitational Breeders Stake (the consola-tion for the LQHBA Futurity featuring the second ten fastest qualifiers) and the Evangeline Downs Derby for 3-year-olds which has split into two divisions each with a purse of $50,000.

Coors Select, who had to overcome a troubled trip in her trial en route to his fourth lifetime win in nine starts, has been installed as the 3/1 favorite in the morning-line in the Restricted Grade I event. One of two starters in the field by prominent sire Oak Tree Special, he is owned by Polly Coleman and trained by Janet Van Bebber. Gilbert Ortiz, who has been aboard for three of his four victo-ries including an easy win in the Louisi-ana Juvenile Stakes at Delta Downs in July, will ride Coors Select, who will leave

from post position 6. Fastest qualifier Rapid Transit and

leading money-earner in the field Toast to Patriot, are two others in the field sure to attract plenty of support from the betting public. Rapid Transit, who was the fastest qualifier with a time of 19.717, has won two in a row since arriving at Evangeline Downs this fall for owner Pablo Gonzalez and trainer Miguel Rodriguez. A Dashin Bye geld-ing, he will by ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. and has drawn post position 8 and is listed as the fourth choice at odds of 6/1. Toast to Patriot, by leading Louisi-ana sire Game Patriot was the second-fastest qualifier for the rich final despite not winning his trial. The Vann Haywood trained gelding checked in second behind Rapid Transit in his trial by a half-length. Owned by Kris Locklear, Toast to Patriot has earned more than $168,000 while recording two wins and four other in-the-money performances in his seven lifetime races. Also listed in the morning-line at 6/1, Toast to Patriot will leave from post position 5 and will be ridden by Alfonso Lujan, the current leading rider here at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino.

Carded as the 10th race on Satur-day’s 11-race program, the approximate post time for the LQHBA Futurity is 9:25 p.m. The Invitational Breeders Stake is the seventh race on the card and is set to run at 8:10 p.m. The two divisions of the EVD Derby are carded as the fifth and ninth races on the program and are set to run at 7:20 p.m. and 9 p.m., respec-tively. All post times are Central.

Here is the field in program order with odds for the $517,844.65 LQHBA Futurity to be run at Evangeline Downs on Saturday, Nov. 19:1. Mossy Oak Tree; Donald Watson 20/12. Ajs Fast Dash; Rodrigo Vallejo 6/13. Mexican Standoff; Jarrod Deschamp 12/1

Wynnewood, OKGrade 1-winning sprinter Euroears starts stallion career at JEH Oklahoma

Millionaire Grade 1-win-ning sprinter Euroears (TB) has been retired from rac-ing and will begin his stud career at JEH Stallion Station’s Oklahoma Division near Wyn-newood in 2012. His fee will be $2,000 for Quarter Horse mares and $4,000 to Thor-oughbreds.

Owned by Jim and Marilyn Helzer, the 7-year-old chestnut stallion won or placed in 14 of 21 starts while earning $1,043,894. He won the Grade 1, $250,000 Big Crosby Stakes last year while setting a new 6-furlong track record at Del Mar in 1:08.17.

He was also second in the Grade 1, $2.5 million Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes at the Dubai World Cup and competed in the $1.5 million Sentinet Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Grade 1) in Louisville this season.

“Euroears is one of the fastest Thoroughbreds in the world and he has the confor-mation of a Quarter Horse,” Jim Helzer said.

Among Euroears’ other stakes wins are the Palos Verdes Stakes (Grade 2), Duncan F. Kenner Stakes, F.W. Gaudin Memorial Stakes, Colonel Power Stakes and Thanksgiving Handicap. He was also second in the Texas Mile (Grade 3) and third in the Lone Star Park Handicap (Grade 3). He ran the quar-ter-mile in :21 and change 10 times and earned a 110 Beyer Speed Figure. Bob Baf-fert, an Eclipse Award-win-ning former Quarter Horse trainer, conditioned him this season.

His sire is Canadian sprint champion Langfuhr ($698,574), a son of Danzig. Langfuhr has sired 59 stakes winners, five champions, and the earners of $78.7 million, including champion Lawyer Ron ($2,790,008), Canadian Horse of the Year Wando ($2,563,038), champion Mobil ($1,977,136) and champion Kimchi ($519,047).

NOV. 11, 2011Altoona, IAPrairie Meadows shifts race days; QH dates on hold

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday approved a 67-day meet that will run from April 20 to Aug. 11 and have a Thursday-to-Sunday racing week.

That’s a change from recent years, in which Prairie Meadows raced Monday and Tuesday afternoons, plus Fri-day and Saturday evenings.

The Mondays and Tues-days drew Prairie Meadows’ largest simulcast handles, but had sparse attendance. With its $32 million hotel due to open by April 1, Prairie Meadows is hoping that the Thursday-through-Sunday schedule will help it draw fans for the entire weekend and boost its casino revenue, as well as on-track betting on horse races.

The starting time will be 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday,

Trey Wood

and Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

“We think it’s an oppor-tunity for people to come in for the weekend and see the races,” Prairie Meadows general manager Gary Palmer said. “We think with the hotel and convention center, people will have a reason to come.

“Sundays are our third-best (casino) day of the week. It makes sense to do it. It’s an opportunity to use our hotel to showcase our racing.”

The commission deferred action on the 2012 Quarter Horse season until Prairie Meadows finds out if its bid to host quarter horse racing’s Challenge Night is accepted. The Challenge is quarter horse racing’s version of Thor-oughbred racing’s Breeders’ Cup, offering six stakes races worth more than $1 million combined. Horses earn berths

by winning regional qualify-ing races throughout the year.

If Prairie Meadows is de-nied the Challenge, its 26-day quarter horse season will run from Aug. 17 to Oct. 6, with three to four days of racing per week.

If it gets the Challenge Night, the season will be 27 days and run through Oct. 27, racing on just Fridays and Saturdays through October.

NOV. 9, 2011Vinton, LA17 pre-entered for $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot; Breeders’ Cup starters Drill and Jake Mo among pre-entries eligible to start in Nov. 19 showdown

On Tuesday morning Delta Downs’ racing office received 17 pre-entries to this

year’s $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (Grade 3), which will be contested for the ninth time on Saturday, Nov. 19. The year’s richest race program will feature eight stakes races in all and nearly $2.2 million in total purse money award-ed. There is a special first post time of 1:15 p.m. CST on Delta Jackpot Day.

Heading the list of possi-ble starters to the 1 1/16-mile test for 2-year-olds hoping to make it to next year’s Ken-tucky Derby is Drill, trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. Drill is a Kentucky-bred son of Lawyer Ron, who rose to prominence last September by winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in Southern California.

If he makes it to the start-ing gate, Drill would become the first Grade 1winner to take part in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. The

dark bay or brown colt also ran in this year’s Grade 2 $2 million Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, where he fin-ished 10th behind Hansen.

Another horse who took part in this year’s Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs has also been pre-entered for the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. Stephen R. Brown’s Jake Mo, a Kentucky-bred son of 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, exits a fifth-place effort in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint, where he hopped at the start and suffered a wide trip.

The best local hope to win the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot is George and Lori Hall’s My Adonis, who will attempt to become the second horse to capture both the Jean Lafitte Stakes and the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. In 2009 Todd Pletcher’s trainee Rule set a

Lexington, KYRTCA experiencing growth and fiscal stability

At its November board meeting in Louisville, President Gary Cartwright announced that since April of this year, the number of RTCA-affiliated councils has nearly doubled. In just six months, through newly affiliated and re-affiliated racetrack chaplaincies, RTCA ministries have increased from 12 to 23.

“This trend is due largely to efficient service and a campaign to verify affiliation

status among the racetrack ministries in 23 states,” said interim executive director Paul Ransdell.

Additionally, the National Service Center has oper-ated more than 12 consecu-tive balanced budgets, yet administrative expenses are down by half from 2010, add-ing, “In a nutshell, every dol-lar is doing twice the work, making RTCA is a very sound charitable investment about which donors can feel good.”

Treasurer David Foley serves on the RTCA Board as chief financial officer, imple-menting fiscal management practices that have led to fiscal stability in the National Service Center.

Following the fall busi-ness meeting, RTCA pre-sented the 2011 White Horse Award to Remington Park’s gate crewman Jeremy Best, who pulled then 69-year-old

jockey Roy Brooks to safety during a potentially fatal gate incident involving the horse Fit Ta Fly.

Also honored was the late Pimlico legend Chick Lang, as well as the national Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association. On hand to receive these honors were Lang family friend Corey Johnsen and Bart Lang, as well as Kentucky HBPA president Rick Hiles.

Organized in 1972, the Race Track Chaplaincy of America sanctions 61 chap-lains who serve at 68 tracks and training centers nation-wide. Its mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ through teaching, preach-ing, and ministering to the spiritual, emotional, physical, social, and educational needs of those persons involved in all aspects of the horse racing industry.

NOV. 13, 2011Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CACharm the Maker grinds out Sharp Cat win

Even though it was not easy, heavily-favored Charm the Maker became a stakes winner Sunday, capturing the $100,000 Sharp Cat at Hol-lywood Park.

Six weeks after fi nishing a close third in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf at Santa Anita, the 2-year-old Empire Maker fi lly wore down Killer Graces in the closing yards to prevail by 1 ¼ lengths at odds of 2-5.

Wide throughout after breaking from the outside in the fi eld of six, Charm the Maker was able to win for the second time in three starts. The $60,000 payday increased her earnings to $127,800.

Trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally for his wife Debbie, Charm the Maker, who was ridden by Garrett Gomez, completed the 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track in 1:45.14. The McAnallys bred the winner in Kentucky.

The victory enabled Gomez to become the fi rst jockey to win the Sharp Cat twice. His fi rst win had come aboard Runway Rosie in 2006.

Charm the Maker, who defeated maidens by 4 ¼ lengths Aug. 31 at Del Mar prior to her 1-length defeat in the Oak Leaf, returned $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10.

Seeking her third stakes victory at Hollywood Park, Killer Graces, who disputed the slow pace (24.03, 48.27 and 1 12:88) inside eventual third place fi nisher Willa B Awesome, paid $4.20 and $3. The show price on Willa B Awesome was $3.20. Lady Pe-can, Regal Betty and Oblivious completed the order of fi nish.

The win was the fi rst in a stakes at the Autumn meet for McAnally since he won the Intercontinental Handicap Nov. 28, 2007 with Charm the Giant, who is the dam of Charm the Maker.

“We thought she was a good fi lly when we bought her back,’’ said McAnally. “We bred her and bought her back for $400,000 at the Keeneland sale.

“I thought there would be a faster pace. That’s why the rider had to get after her more than he thought he would. We’ll savor this one, but the (Grade I, $250,000-guaranteed Hollywood) Starlet (Dec. 10) is the most logical place to run next. We’re looking forward to running her on the turf. Her

dam won the (2007) Wilshire on the turf here.’’

In Sunday’s fourth race, Empire Way, a 2-year-old full brother to Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner Royal Delta, was a half-length win-ner of his debut.

Owned by Heinz Stein-mann and trained by Mike Harrington, the son of Empire Maker and the A.P. Indy mare Delta Princess, won easier than the margin would indi-cate. He completed the 6 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:17.93 under jockey Joel Rosario.

Racing will resume Thurs-day. Post time is 12:30 p.m.

The Hollywood Park Ca-sino will be open for dark day simulcasts Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is free.

recording his fi rst career stakes win. Miguel Hernandez rode the 6-year-old gelding for trainer Justin Evans.

Bred in California by Sum-mer Mayberry, Pack Your Bags is one of 14 stakes winners sired by Flying Continental, a son of the Gummo stal-lion Flying Paster whose 366 starters have earned more than $17.5 million. Racing from 1988-93, Flying Conti-nental banked $1,815,938 from 51 outs, and his 12 wins included the 1990 Charles H. Strub Stakes (Grade 1) at Santa Anita Park and Jockey Club Gold Cup (Grade 1) at Belmont Park.

Flying Continental’s top earners include Continental Red, an earner of nearly $1.4 million who won the 2002 San Luis Rey Handicap (Grade 2) at Santa Anita. The stallion died in 2004 at the age of 18.

Pack Your Bags’ dam, Ultimate Honor, is a winning 17-year-old mare by the Con-quistador Cielo stallion Nor-questor. Ultimate Honor has produced fi ve winners from eight starters, including High Five Gal, a half sister to Pack Your Bags who ran second in the 2009 Bustles and Bows Stakes at Fairplex Park.

Pack Your Bags sold for

$40,000 at the 2007 Ocala Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training in Florida. The gelding has eight of 45 races, and the $33,000 winner’s share of the Lea County Sprint Stakes purse pushed his earn-ings to $258,002. His stakes resume includes a third-place fi nish in the 6-furlong, $100,000 Premier Cup Handi-cap at Zia Park on Sept. 11.

Sent to post at odds of 9-1, Pack Your Bags returned a $20 win mutuel, and he teamed with 6-5 favorite Humble Smarty for a $50.80 ($2) exacta. Lion Hall, Kineti-cat Yankee, and Jam’n Jackson completed the order of fi nish.

Humble Smarty is a 7-year-old gelding by Mutakd-dim who was coming off of an upset victory in the 6-furlong, $100,000 David M. Vance Sprint Stakes at Remington Park on Sept. 30. Owned and trained by Brett Creighton, Humble Smarty has won 15 of 57 races, including the May 30 Honor the Hero Turf Express Stakes at Canterbury Park in Minnesota, and he has banked $385,017.

Lion Hall was a $60,000 buy at the 2010 Barretts May Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Train-ing. The 3-year-old gray or roan colt by the Tale Of The

Cat stallion Lion Heart has earned $73,737 from seven outs for his owner, Roland Mackie.

A First Caller wins NM Breeders’ Quarter Horse Championship

Richard R. Shearer’s A First Caller, a homebred 6-year-old gelding by Calligrapher, sprinted to a half-length vic-tory in the 440-yard, $50,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Quarter Horse Championship (RG3), as The Downs at Albuquerque ended its 54-day meet on Sunday.

Saddled by James J. Gonzales II, ridden by Oscar Rincon, and sent to post at odds of 31-1, A First Caller covered his quarter-mile trip in :21.330 and earned a 100 speed index. The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $433,404.

One of A First Caller’s half sisters, the Heza Fast Man mare Fast First Call, ran second to Zip First in the 2002 Ruidoso Futurity (Grade 1).

A First Caller was just two weeks removed from a ninth-place fi nish in the $170,480 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. All told, the gelding has won nine of 37 races, including the 350-yard, $100,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG1) at Sunland Park in ‘08.

NOV. 12, 2011Golden Gate Fields, Berkeley, CALongshot Passing Game rallies to win Golden NuggetBy Michael Cusortelli

Passing Game, a 39-1 longshot, unleashed a strong stretch rally to win Satur-day’s $62,540 Golden Nug-get Stakes for 2-year-olds at Golden Gate Fields.

Racing for Charles and Carol Bernhardt, Stan Cham-bers, and William MacNeil, Passing Game covered 6 fur-longs in 1:10.09 while scoring his second victory in as many starts. Kevin Krigger rode the dark bay or brown colt by Game Plan for trainer Gary Sherlock.

Passing Game was bred in California, and the colt became the 16th stakes win-ner from 286 starters sired by Game Plan, an unraced 18-year-old son of Danzig whose runners have earned more than $11.8 million.

Game Plan entered stud in 1997, and his most noteworthy starters include Mistical Plan, the winner of the 2008 Princess Rooney Handicap (Grade 1) at Calder Racecourse, and Grade 3 win-ner Celtic Dreamin. Owned by a syndicate, he currently stands for a $2,500 fee at E.A. Ranches at Ramona, Califor-nia.

Passing Game is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Fifth Av-enue Suite, a winning 9-year-old daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Category Five.

Passing Game was mak-ing his fi rst start since May 15, when he won a 4 1/2-furlong

maiden special weight race for California-breds at Holly-wood Park. The $39,700 win-ner’s share of the Golden Nug-get Stakes purse increased his bankroll to $69,700.

Passing Game returned an $80.60 win mutuel. Chips All In ran second, a head be-hind the winner, to complete a $323.30 ($1) exacta.

Marshal Marini, 7-5 favorite Coach Sickie, Russian Greek, Blue Collar Boy, Sheer Talent, Squid, and Johnny Be Mine completed the order of fi nish.

Runner-up Chips All In is a bay colt by North Light (IRE) campaigned by Jean Ever-est, John O’Brien, and Daniel Valdez. A $4,500 buy at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Chips All In has earned $102,400 from four starts, and his three victories include the Aug. 21, $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity at Arapa-hoe Park near Denver.

Marshal Marini has won $51,120 from fi ve races for his owner, Barbara DeLima. The homebred gray gelding by Marino Marini was coming off of a second-place fi nish to Longview Drive in the 6-fur-long, $75,960 Charlie Palmer Futurity at Fresno on October 16.

Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CAFavored Liaison successful in Real QuietBy Michael Cusortelli

Less than a month after defeating maidens at Santa Anita, Liaison stretched out successfully in his stakes debut, winning the $100,000 Real Quiet Saturday at Hol-lywood Park.

Never too far off the pace while racing in the clear under jockey Rafael Bejarano, the 2-year-old Indian Charlie colt challenged for the lead with about a quarter of a mile to go, took over from pacesetter Senor Rain with a furlong re-maining, then withstood the late rally of Rousing Sermon

to prevail by a half-length.Owned by Arnold Zetcher

LLC and trained by Bob Baf-fert, Liaison, the 4-5 favorite, completed the 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track in 1:44.72. Out of the Victory Gallop mare Galloping Gal, Liaison is now 2-for-3 with earnings of $94,560.

A $290,000 purchase at the Keeneland September sale in 2010, Liaison returned $3.80, $2.60 and $2.20.

Two weeks removed from a decisive victory in the California Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in his fi rst outing beyond 6 furlongs, Rousing Sermon fi nished well to gain the place. He paid $3.60 and $2.40 while winding up 3 ¾

lengths clear of Senor Rain.Trying to give trainer Pe-

ter Miller and co-owner Gary Barber their second consecu-tive win in the Real Quiet – they had scored with Comma to the Top a year ago – Senor Rain set a moderate pace un-der jockey Martin Garcia, then couldn’t contain the top two late. The show price on the Indiana bred was $3.60.

“Liaison is just getting better and better,’’ said Baff ert, who also won the Yo Eleven Stakes Friday night with 16-1 shot Racing Aptitude. “It’s good to win the Real Quiet. He’s been working well since Del Mar, but he’s just never showed a lot of speed for an Indian Charlie.

“He’s got just enough speed to keep him in the race. He’s still green, but he worked real well here (a half mile in 47 4/5 Nov. 8).

“(Rousing Sermon) looked like he was going to run right by him, but when he got to him my horse just kicked in again. That’s what you want to see right now.’’

Liaison is one of a handful of candidates Baff ert has for the $750,000-guaranteed CashCall Futurity Dec. 17, a race the Hall of Fame trainer

has won a record fi ve times.“(First out maiden winner)

So Brilliant is going to run in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (Nov. 24) and I don’t know yet what I’m going to do with (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner) Secret Circle. We could have four starters in the race, or three, two, one or none. This is the time to develop them.’’

Jockey Martin Pedroza escaped serious injury after being unseated in Saturday’s fourth race.

Pedroza was riding Carol’s Legacy in the maiden race and the 2-year-old Langfuhr colt was well clear of the fi eld and on his way to an appar-ent victory before he ducked sharply into the rail.

The veteran rider got up under his own power not long after the incident and returned to ride his next two mounts. He did not ride Studio City in the ninth race due to some stiff ness, but is expected to return Sunday.

The feature attraction Sunday – post time is 12:30 p.m. - is the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes for 2-year-old fi llies at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track. The Sharp Cat is the seventh of nine races.

NOV. 11, 2011Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OKAmazing run from last gets Offi cer Prado the win in Clever Trevor Stakes

Well over 10 lengths behind with just a quarter-mile left in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes on Friday night at Remington Park, Offi cer Prado was last in the fi eld of seven and appeared defeated. However, jockey Lindey Wade had promised himself that he would not give up on Offi cer Prado, going so far to write the ‘never give up’ caption next to the horse’s name in his racing program. Wade didn’t let him-self down, or Offi cer Prado.

“When I angled him out leaving the turn, he really gave me a burst of speed,” Wade recalled of his winning stretch rally. “I thought ‘OK, we might get a part of this, maybe third.’ I knew we were way back but we were going to get a piece of it. Then I thought we could get second, and then I thought ‘We’re go-ing to win!”

Win they did. Isn’t He Clever had taken the lead in the stretch but could not hold it as Offi cer Prado collared him to win by a half-length. Mr Bluegrass Music fi nished a close third, just another neck behind the runner-up.

Sword Trick b Early Flier, set a quick early pace in the seven-furlong Clever Trevor to set up the possibility of a clos-ing move if the front-runners began to falter late. Sword Trick handled the fi rst quarter-

mile in :21.56 seconds and the half-mile in :43.45 seconds. Offi cer Prado hit the fi nish in 1:23.10 over the fast track.

Away at 8-1 odds, Offi cer Prado paid $18.40 to win, $8.80 to place and $10 to show. Isn’t He Clever paid $10.60 to place and $10.40 to show. Mr Bluegrass Music returned $17.60 to show.

Sword Trick was the beaten even-money wager-ing favorite, fi nishing fi fth. Alsvid, trying to add the Clever Trevor Stakes to his win earlier this season in the Kip Deville Stakes, was fourth after battling for the lead in the stretch.

Offi cer Prado is owned by Kathryn East of Edinburg, Texas, and is trained by Steve Asmussen. A colt by Offi cer from the El Prado (Ire) mare Prado Lady, Offi cer Prado won for the second time in fi ve attempts and made $60,000 in the process. Bred in Texas by East, Offi cer Prado has now earned $102,555.

Offi cer Prado gave As-mussen his third Clever Trevor Stakes. He also scored with King Gulch in 2008 and Grand Slam Andre in 2009. This is the fi rst Clever Trevor victory for East and for Wade.

The race is named after the great Oklahoma-bred Clever Trevor who won the inaugural Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in 1989 before going on to become a millionaire while winning many graded events in his career.

Offi cer Prado, and many from the Clever Trevor Stakes, will now be headed to the top 2-year-old stakes race of the

season, the $300,000 Spring-board Mile on the fi nal night of the season, Dec. 10.

Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CARacing Aptitude surprises in Yo Eleven

Racing Aptitude, the longest shot in the fi eld at 16-1, led virtually throughout to easily win the $80,650 Yo Eleven Stakes Friday night at Hollywood Park.

A distant third as the 19-10 favorite in his fi rst start in California and initial try for trainer Bob Baff ert Oct. 20 at Santa Anita, Racing Aptitude engaged with Square Eddie for the lead immediately, took control down the backside and went on to the decisive victory.

Owned by breeder Don Dizney, the 3-year-old gelded son of Aptitude and the Saint Ballado mare Ecclesiastes is now 3-for-11 with earnings of $143,850. The two previous wins for the Florida bred had come in 2010 over the turf at Calder.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, Racing Aptitude, who paid $35.20, $12.20 and $4.40, covered the 7 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:28.72.

Tweebster, the 6-5 favor-ite making his fi rst start for Baff ert since a seventh-place fi nish in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap March 5, was second, 4 ½ lengths behind the winner. The 4-year-old son of gray son of Tapit, who has two wins and a pair of runner-up fi nishes over the Hol-lywood Park main, returned $2.80 and $2.20. El Gato Malo paid $2.80 to show.

In losing for the eighth time in a row since winning over the Del Mar grass Sept. 9, 2009, El Gato Malo fi nished a half-length behind Tweebster.

Golden Itiz, the 2-1 sec-ond choice, and Square Eddie completed the order of fi nish.

Earlier in the program, jockey Joe Talamo won three times, taking the second with 14-1 outsider Lunch Time Diva, the fourth with Skippy Due and the sixth atop fa-vored Blue Tambourine.

NOV. 11, 2011Los Alamitos Race Course, Cypress, CAThoroughbred Warrens Heartthrob heads Gold RushBy Ty Wyant

The Thoroughbred War-rens Heartthrob rallied to win the fi rst of two trials with the fastest-qualifying time and be-come the sole member of his breed to reach the fi nals of the 870-yard Gold Rush Derby at Los Alamitos on Friday night.

The Gold Rush Derby, held on Dec. 4, is back on the Los Alamitos stakes calendar for the fi rst time since being held from 1986 to 2007. The race has highlighted future 870-yard champions such as Snowbound Superstar and

Truly A Pleasure.Keith Craigmyle and Rick

Pritchard’s Warrens Heart-throb rallied from near the rear of the fi ve-horse fi eld and then made a three-wide move to quickly move past his quarter horse rivals to win by nearly two lengths with a :45.479 time.

Hot jockey Cheryl Charl-ton was up for the win. She won on fi ve straight mounts at Los Alamitos — dating back to last weekend — before suff ering a loss, but was then back in the winner’s circle with Warrens Heartthrob.

Warren Hearthrob was claimed for $8,000 two starts ago at Fairplex Park and was then off the board in his fi rst start at 870 yards, at Turf Paradise on Oct. 22. The Gold Rush trial win was his fourth

win from nine 2011 starts. The other victories came in claim-ing races.

In the second trial, Robert Parra’s Bound To Snow scored a 13-1 upset in a four-horse fi eld with the fourth-fastest

qualifying time of :46.785. Joel Cruz was aboard for the maiden-winning score by three quarters of a length. He was one of four off spring of Snowbound (tb) to reach the eight-horse derby fi nals.
