  • PROJECT 1: EXTENDYear 1

    O V E R A L L S C H E M E

A project with the brief of creating an extension to the faculty of architecture, in an area of our own choice. The early design concepts emerged from Sou Fujimotos wooden house considering an interplay of mezzanines and sub levels. The views shown are renderings of the finished design rendered in 3ds Max.

  • A site based in Cambridge along the river, with a brief of reinventing the public house. This design aims to combine the notion of pub and theatre togetheras a modern take on the London pub theatre. Flexibility in the architecture through moving partitions allows spaces to be reconfigured. Hence the pub space can open out to a stage, or be enclosed alone. The stages can then expand and be viewed through various levels depending on the type of performance.

This design was situated in Dalston, London. The overall brief was to choose a type of dance and use its qualities to define a pavilion for this. The dance I chose was Capoeria, whereby I wanted a very specific and atmospheric display of the dance to take place. Hence the space is linear but describes a curve, relating to the nature of the dance. The choice of material reflects this also, with a lightness in the timber adding to a sense of temporality.

The overall concept of the building reflects the form of the site, creating a front and back which steps down in form. The studios are either on the street or facing a garden, with the foyer as a main centre. The studios are on every floor as a sense of vertical progression, while the terraces contrast this with a horizontal layering. This gives a lot of diversity to the studios and ideally more comfort to the dancers.

This project had a simple brief towards creating private sector housing, within the large site of Mount Pleasant. The approach to this design was more conceptual, dealing with fragments collaged onto the site from the immediate context. This allowed for a diversity in housing type and interplay of mixed use through interpretting existing typologies.
