The Apparent blessing of Allah 1
Surah Ar-Rahman (Ayah 1-5) February 9, 2013
Introduction The Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is about Allah’s Rahmah (Mercy). It gives us comfort and tranquility.
The name of the Surah comes from its first Ayah, which is “Ar-‐‑Rahman”. There is always a connection between the Surah and its theme. The Surah starts by the name of Allah “Ar-‐‑Rahman”. All the Ayat in Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman tell us who is “Ar-‐‑Rahman”. Every Ayah in this Surah tells us about Allah’s mercy
Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is a Makki Surah. Some Ayahs in this Surah were revealed in Madinah. The placement of Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is after Surah al Qamar. Surah Al Qamar has very strong verses about Allah’s punishment. Surah Al Qamar tells us about nations that denied Allah’s message despite clear signs from him and therefore Allah seized them in punishment. Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is about Allah’s blessing.
Both Surah Al Qamar and Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman tell us about “Who is Allah?” Surah Al Qamar tells us that we need to know Allah by knowing how he dealt with the previous nations when they disbelieved and denied him. Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman tells us that we can know Allah through his bounties and blessings.
The Second connection between Surah Al Qamar and Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is the miracles. Surah Al Qamar starts with mention of miracle of the moon splitting which helped the people in their time. The miracle of the moon splitting was to support Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) so the disbelievers believe in the Prophet.
The beginning of Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman tells us about the other miracle, which is an everlasting miracle, i.e. The Quran -‐‑The great miracle from Allah.
The third connection is that the last Ayah in Surah Al Qamar is telling us that the Muttaqeen (pious
people) will be next to the companionship of the two names of Allah مليیك and قتدرر Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman .م
starts with ـن حم :Now we have three names of Allah here . ٱٱلر
”means “The King” and “The Owner مليیك .1
قتدرر .2 ” means “Al Qadir” and “Al Qadeer م

ـن .3 حم ”means “The Most Merciful ٱٱلر
Ø Here we are told that our King is Ar-‐‑Rahman.
Ø Who is the one who owns Rahmah? It is Allah مليیك “The King” and “The Owner”
Ø Who is the one who is able to make the Rahmah reach out to whomever he wills? It is قتدرر Al“ مQadir” and “Al Qadeer”. Allah is able to make the mercy reach to whomever he wills.
Another connection is that in Surah Al Qamar we have to look at the Allah’s signs through his warnings. Allah repeatedly said
Surah Al Qamar is all about Allah’s warnings and torment and how Allah dealt with the previous nations. In Surah Ar Rahman Allah tells us to look at Allah’s blessing and bounties. Allah repeatedly tells us
Another connection in the Surah Al Qamar says there are warnings and torment but Allah made the Quran easy for us to understand. In Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman starts with the biggest blessing – knowledge of the Quran is the biggest blessing for mankind.
Types of Tafseer
There are two different types of Tafseer.
Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman (Ayah 1-‐‑5) • • •
The Apparent blessing of Allah 3
The Surah is divided into parts according to the topic e.g. Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is مووضووعي .1divided into 7 parts. Each of the 6 parts has a different topic.
.is for analyzing. We take one part, one ayah and analyze it تحليیلي .2
The meaning of االمحوورراالعامم is the “theme” or “the central idea” of any Surah. In Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman the
theme is نعمم االررحمانن which means “the blessings and bounties of Ar-‐‑Rahman”. Every Ayah in Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman is telling us about the blessings of Ar-‐‑Rahman.
Now the Surah is divided into 7 parts.

Now each of the parts above needs to be related to the central theme االمحوورراالعامم so we need to go back
to the main idea which is االررحمانن نعمم (the blessings and bounties of Allah). So for each of the parts above we need to see its association with the main theme.
االظظظظظاهھھھرةة هللا ننعممم Ayah 1-13
The Apparent blessing of Allah
Ayah 1
The first Ayah is Ar-‐‑Rahman. Ar-‐‑Rahman is from Rahmah and the word Rahman is filled with Rahmah. Allah’s Rahmah reaches out to everyone everywhere. Everything around us is indicative of Allah’s Rahmah. All good and evil creation signifies Allah’s Rahmah.
Ayah 2
Second Ayah tells us that the greatest Rahmah from Allah is لمم ع ٱٱلقررءاانن. After mentioning the name of
Allah Ar-‐‑Rahman, the next Ayah is This علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن blessing of علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن is so great that it is mentioned even before creation of mankind. It is correct that Allah created the man and then taught him the Quran. Both these blessings are mentioned here
1. To be created and to exist. 2. To be taught the Quran.
Surah Ar-‐‑Rahman (Ayah 1-‐‑5) • • •
The Apparent blessing of Allah 5
The blessing to be taught the Quran is greater than our creation. The biggest blessing is that Allah taught us the Quran and made it easy for us to understand. This blessing is more than our existence. Without being taught the Quran our existence has no significance. Infact our existence is null without the Quran. If a person knows the Quran it means he exists. On the contrary if someone exists for 1000 years but does not know the Quran than it is as if he is dead and he does not exist.
Now don’t we want to be taught the Quran? Don’t we want to know Kalam Allah? Then we need to ask Allah Ar-‐‑Rahman to give us from his Rahmah because Quran is Rahmah from Allah. We need to ask Allah to give us the blessing of learning the Quran. Ar-‐‑Rahman is the one who will teach us. Our hearts need to be attached to Ar-‐‑Rahman so that he will teach us the Quran.
Who taught the Quran ? Allah Ar-‐‑Rahman.
The Quran has all the guidance that we need. Allah taught us his Kalaam (Book) and made us to understand it.
Now What is the meaning of علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن ? 1. The way of recitation of the Quran -‐‑ Allah taught us how to pronounce the Quran through the
means. Allah taught Jibrael and Jibrael taught the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) and the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) taught it to the Sahaba’s and so on. The teaching included the way it should be recited. We must always remember that Allah wants us to recite the Quran in a way that pleases Him. Allah taught us the way of recitation of the Quran out of his Rahmah.
2. The Meaning of the Quran – Allah taught us the meaning of the Quran out of his Rahmah
3. How to act upon the Quran and how to apply it to our life?
To summarize means Allah علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن taught us how to pronounce and perfect the recitation, the meaning of the Quran and how to act upon the Quran.
In order to fulfill the due rights of the Quran we should be addicted to hearing and reciting the Quran. Allah wants to see our determination. The more we increase the recitation the more Allah will perfect the recitation, our understanding of the Quran will be more and we will act upon it. The Quran guides us to live an ideal life in the Duniya and Akirah. It guides us to the way of success in Duniya and Akirah. Being successful in our life is to be successful in the Duniya and Akirah.

Ayah 3
After the biggest blessing of علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن Allah tells us about خلق ااالنسانن. Allah created the human to exist. We need to appreciate the Rahmah of our existence. It is because that we exist as humans that we have the ability to understand the Quran. Therefore this too is also a great blessing from Allah that we exist as human being and not any other creation. Allah created the human being in the best form and supported him with limbs in order to worship Allah and to love him. All this can happen through
علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن . The Quran is an everlasting miracle, it is our Manual and it tells us the purpose of our existence.

Ayah 4
Now the 4th blessing is علمهھ ٱٱلبيیانن In order to help the human for علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن Allah taught the man . ٱٱلبيیانن
What is the meaning of ٱٱلبيیانن ?
The first meaning of is ٱٱلبيیانن that Allah gave the human being the ability to express him in different ways. In order to clarify what we have in our hearts we can express by different means:
1. By talking 2. By writing 3. By actions.
This ability to express ourself is one of the greatest blessings from Allah.
The second meaning of ٱٱلبيیانن is that Allah taught the man to understand the words and the actions . This is for the receiver (who is being expressed to by talking, writing and by actions)
The ٱٱلبيیانن is a great blessing from Allah as it helps us for علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن Allah wants us to be successful
i.e. to go to Paradise. We can go to Paradise by علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن. Allah gave us the ٱٱلبيیانن so it is easy for us to understand the Quran.

Ayah 5
Now Allah takes us to the creation of the Universe.
What is بحسبانن ? It means everything is estimated and calculated accurately.
Allah prepared the place where we are living i.e. the universe. Allah created the sun and the moon and everything in the universe for the human being. Everything in the universe including the sun and the moon is serving the humans. Don’t be attached to the creation and don’t worship the creation. This is Allah’s Rahmah that he created the sun and the moon. Allah created everything in the universe for the
humans in order to help him do علمم ٱٱلقررءاانن. .
Why only the sun and the moon are mentioned here? Because the sun helps us see clearly during the day and to know the time (morning, afternoon etc ). The moon helps us during the night and for the calendar. Allah tells us here that the sun and moon are not random but they have an accurately calculated schedule. The sun and the moon from the time they were created they are following the same schedule assigned to them and will continue to do so till the Day of Judgment. The sun and the moon are following the commandments of Allah.
The universe is so perfectly organized as per a fixed schedule so we should learn from this and organize our lives too. We can do this by being a slave of Allah then He will streamline our lives. Obeying Allah will organize our lives. We need to focus and not get distracted from the purpose of our creation, which is to worship and obey Allah.
