RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY continue to
be the cornerstone of our approach at Garrison
Road. Educating our students on acceptance and
inclusivity as well as bullying—including cyber-
bullying has been the foundation to creating a
positive culture and building citizenship. Our
Stand-Up Team has been highly influential in
this movement.
Our Home Reading Program has been a tremen-
dous success in helping bridge the gap between
home and school. The strategies brought home
in your child’s reading book bag are the very
strategies necessary to develop a greater sense of
reading for meaning. Nightly reading with your
child is one of the best ways to help him or her
grow in this capacity. Please consider being a
volunteer in this worthwhile
project.
How can I support my
child’s learning?
You are an important partner
in your child’s mathematics education.
When you find ways to engage your child in
thinking and talking about mathematics, you are
providing an important key for unlocking his or
her future success.
Today, critical thinking, problem solving, rea-soning ability and the ability to communicate mathematically are essential skills. These pro-cesses are the foundation of mathematics in-struction in Ontario schools. They are brought into play as you engage your child in the activi-ties suggested in the guide from Ontario Minis-
try of Education’s Helping Your Child Do Mathe-
matics: A Guide for Parents. You can access this guide on our website: garrisonroad.dsbn.org. Enjoy learning together!
I would like to remind you that the office is a wel-
coming and helpful place. Please feel free to ask
questions, voice concerns or make an appoint-
ment at the desk. As parents, you are a key part of
making school a rewarding and memorable part of
your child’s life. Please consider being part of the
School Council or volunteering in a classroom.

What’s Happening Around Garrison Road School
Garrison Road is now an Ontario Eco School!
Garrison Road joined a province-wide program which develops and builds our responsibilities within our school community through environmental learning and action. We have to register as well as get certi-fied annually and are awarded a bronze, silver or gold level that is placed on our plaque. We conduct an annual waste audit and are assessed based on provincial standards to help further our environmental knowledge.
Garrison students, parents and teachers play an active eco friendly role in and outside of the classroom to build our knowledge and set future goals in minimizing our environmental footprint. By teaching our kids the importance of waste minimization, being active and making healthy life choices, we give them the tools to have the chance to live in a cleaner and more environmentally friendly world.
The week of October 16-20 was Waste Reduction Week and Links for Greener Learning, a non profit organization from St. Catharines came to teach the kids which garbage goes in which bin (blue, grey, green or garbage bin). The kids had lots of fun winning the many environmentally friendly giveaways that they had to offer. Stay tuned to the many fun and exciting plans the Green team and Eco Club have this year. GOOO ECO! ~ Ms. Scheffold
Me to We Club
Me to We set goals to implement change in our own community and in the world. The students take action through a variety of initiatives such as We Scare Hunger (food drive for COPE); We Take
Charge (recycling batteries for a sustainable earth);
We Stand Together (facilitating learning and dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous
Canadians); We Bake for Hunger (bake sale);
We Walk for Water (understanding the issues of water quality); We are Silent (to raise aware-ness about children's rights). ~ Mrs. Graves & Mrs. Gracey
Mrs Cassidy’s Corner
Reading Rainbow Challenge— has started this past month. Students are welcome to start at anytime throughout the year. Each completed page (6 in total) earns the student a small prize (first one is a free McDonald's ice cream cone) and a draw ticket for a chance to win one of two 2018 family (2 adult, 2 chil-dren) season's passes to Safari Niagara. The draw will be held in June. If you haven't seen a Red page yet, ask your child if he or she has it tucked away. Full details of the contest are written on the back. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Cassidy.
Supersavers Club— is up and running again this year. Don't miss out on a great weekly opportunity to save some money. Students must have an account with Penfinacial in order to participate. This year, the monthly draw prizes will be money deposited directly into your child's account. As well, on their birthday they receive a gift from Penfinancial. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Cassidy at the school, or pop into the Penfinancial Branch on Garrison Road.
Lego Donations— If you have any unused Lego, marble runs, or K'nex laying around, would you con-cider donating them to the Kindergarten Makerspace program? We are also looking for ends of wool, fab-ric, crafting material, beads, and scrapbooking odds and ends. Thank you in advance for your support and donations.
What’s Happening Around Garrison Road School (cont.) Stand Up Committee
We are in our 5th year of Stand Up run by Mrs. Renshaw. This year It is composed of over 60 Grade 7 & 8 students who "use their voice" and ideas to present messages at student led assemblies (once a month) and during break out sessions that are held each day 3. The ideas come from student feedback as well as focus on bullying and standing up, growth mindset, team work and empathy. In the new year we will also be looking at unlearning bias and social injustice. ~ Mrs. Renshaw
Terry Fox Run
On September 22 our school participated in the Terry Fox Run. Terry had a dream to raise one dollar for each Canadian to help scientists and doctors put an end to cancer. Mrs. Schooning’s class went around to each classroom with a replica of the shoe Terry Fox wore for his Cross -Canada trek to collect donations. Students then were able to sign their name on the Terry Fox Poster in the foyer to show they helped. Thank you Greyhounds for helping to keep Terry’s dream alive. ~ Mrs. VanHelvert
Intramurals
Mr Warkentin has been hard at work organizing intramurals during lunch breaks. Just over 40 grade 4 - 6 students took part in our Indoor Soccer league which took place in September. The intermediate students are currently involved in our Intramural Volleyball league. The league focusses on sportsmanship, having fun and skill development. ~ Mr. Warkentin
Cross Country
Congratulations to our greyhound cross-country runners who competed hard in the cold at the DSBN cham-pionships on October 16. The following student athletes represented our school; Blake Coopman, Dekin Hill, Jack Coopman, Kaiden Craft, Kendall Leggett, Liam Stickland, Matthew Stehling, Nate Wolbert, Noah Gmoser, Nole General, Owen Hudson, and Alex Brewster. Special recognition goes to our top runner Han-nah Bourdon who finished 9th.
There is nothing easy about cross country running and all of these runners definitely deserve our congratu-lations and respect for all their hard work, grit and determination. All runners are asked to bring back their clean jerseys to Mrs. Thomas. Great job team! ~ Mr. Warkentin & Mrs. Thomas
Intermediate Girls Volleyball
The Intermediate Girls Volleyball team traveled to GFESS on October 20 for a friendly tournament with our local schools. The girls played well the entire day, moving around and communicating as a team. They went undefeated throughout the round robin games, and met John Brant again in the championship finals. The girls placed the ball into open space and were consistent with their serves taking on the title of first place. Way to go ladies, Mrs. Schoonings is exceptionally proud of how well you worked together and per-severed to the end! ~ Mrs. Schoonings
Intermediate Co-Ed Soccer
Our Intermediate Co-Ed Soccer Tournament was held on September 18. Thank you to all the parents who
helped out. The team played hard, had a great day and made it to the finals for the consolation. We ended
two games in shoot outs. Adam led us in five goals and the girls were amazing as they played all five
games without subs or breaks. Great work team! ~ Mme Amato

**Severe Food Allergy**
There are students that attend our school that suffer from a severe food allergy which can cause an anaphylactic reaction.
An anaphylactic reaction is an allergic reaction so severe that in some cases, it can be life-threatening. These children
are allergic to NUTS and NUT RELATED products. Prevention is the best approach. Therefore, we ask your co-
operation in not sending any snacks or lunches containing any nut products with your child.
We are also instituting other measures to create an appropriate learning environment. We are asking that all food be eat-
en in the classroom(s) or designated areas, not outside or on the buses. We encourage students not to share snacks
with others.
Your support in this potential life-threatening matter is greatly appreciated.
The Breakfast Club is offered to all students free of charge. This service is provided by the generous support from Ni-agara Nutrition Partners, private donations and organiza-tions that kindly donate peanut free product and funds.
Breakfast is served from 8:20 a.m. - 8:35 a.m., no stu-dents will be permitted entry until 8:20.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers who donate their time. You make a difference!
Please consider making a donation to our Breakfast Club by dropping off a peanut free breakfast item (cereal, juice box-es, etc. ). Your support is appreciated.
