Introduction to Cavendish Group China's Power Generation Sector Growth: To support its astounding economic development, China has been building up a massive power generation capacity at an accelerated pace. By the end of 2007, Chinas power generation capacity reached 713.3 Giga- Watts (GW), ranking second in the world, and second only to the United States. In a span of six years, China has more than doubled its capacity. Currently, Chinas installed capacity is about 65% that of the United States while its production volume is about 80% that of the United States. As Chinas urbanization and industrialization continues, the nation is expected to overtake the United States to become the world largest electricity producer in 2010. Slide 3 Contents List Power Generation Technology showcases the latest technologies and innovations that are continuing to change the Power Generation industry. Our exclusive and comprehensive coverage is maintained each quarter by in-depth articles and case studies focussing on the following core areas: Core Editorial topics: Coal Nuclear Fusion Power Power Infrastructure Emissions Health, Safety and Environment Site Reports Equipment Profiles Editorial / Advertising content helps readers to optimise and understand: New technology implementation from overseas Energy conservation / environmental protection / SUSTAINABILITY Best practice and new trends in Engineering, Manufacturing and R & D Building capacity and Power Generation project development From a Cavendish Group China readership survey conducted in Jan 2010: 64% subscribed to keep up to date with industry developments and source suppliers 60% spent over 45 minutes reading each publication 73% regularly referred back to previous issues 75% thought the technical level of the articles was just right 86% thought that the length of the articles was just right Slide 4 Overview According to the recent reports from the National Development and Reform Commission (Chinas major industry policy maker and planner, also known as NDRC), by December 2007, the country had shut down 553 small generators with a combined capacity of 14.4 GW, 43.8% higher than the annual quote. The surging coal prices also aided in forcing power producers to phase out these obsolete small generators to their own interest, as an advanced 600 megawatts coal-fired generator can save up to 30% of the energy consumed by a 50 megawatts generator for each unit of electricity generated. Since 2007, Chinas coal market has been fully liberated and power producers are no longer entitled to preferential price treatment. In addition, China wishes to increase its production of nuclear power. According to the nations plans, by 2020, its nuclear capacity will reach 40 GW.
