Spring Assessments Overview

➢ Consistent, district-wide assessment process for ELL students

➢Assessment takes place end of April to June

➢Assessment kits loaned to schools for 1-2 week period

➢Inform Kiran Basran, Assessment/Helping Teacher at the

Welcome Centre, of assessment dates and student numbers.

Use the form provided.

➢New ELLs assessed after spring break do not require

reassessment at year-end

Kindergarten - One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test

Grade 1- Oral sample analyzed with Vocabulary Profiler

● Both assessments will yield only descriptive results- not

normed to identify ELL levels

● Assessments will allow teachers to identify vocabulary

restrictions

Grade 3 Writing Assessment

First draft only- total= 40 minutes, including 10 minutes of oral

discussion and student planning.

● Please do not record any words or ideas generated during

this preparation period. Teacher input in the initial planning

time should be oral only.

● Students will be given 30 minutes to complete their writing,

without teacher help, dictionaries or other assistance.

● evaluated with the district Grade 3 writing matrix and anchor

papers

Intermediate Year-end Assessment➢ Reading - BERA B

Writing Sample- first draft only - total= 40 minutes, including 10 minutes of oral

discussion.

Completing AIPs

➢ Re-assessment tab in ELL Database

● when assessment is completed, update AIPs online and print

for the upcoming school year.

● ***specialist ELL teacher signs and dates the AIP

● attach testing protocols to the AIP for the upcoming school

year. Use the new checklist as a sleeve to keep the documents

together.

● AIPs must be completed by the end of the school year.

● selecting allows the ELL teacher to enter the annual

reassessment details for a student

● select to complete the AIP for the next school

year

● select the edit button beside the prior reassessment to edit or

modify an existing AIP

➢In the top left corner, select the appropriate school year, 2018.

➢If students have been assessed at the Welcome Centre from

March onward, you do not have to reassess these students.

You will only be allowed to select a

particular year once. If for some

reason, the current year has already

been selected, complete the AIP by

modifying the existing AIP.

Exit Guidelines

Students exit ELL for one of the following reasons:

• They have demonstrated proficiency in their English language skills and are meeting expectations in academic subjects.

• They have reached 5 years of service and the funding has expired and they are meeting expectations in the classroom.

• Their learning profiles demonstrate the need for LSS support and/or they have received 5 or more years of ELL support.

• Their parents have declined ELL support.

• International student is returning to home city.

• Student moves to another school district.
