Smart Grid - Definition

The Smart Grid is a modernized electric distribution system that combines advanced communications and controls to create a responsive and resilient network. It provides the basis for increased reliability and efficiency.

Smart Grid – Key Components(PPL)


• Alstom Software• Allows System Operators (SOs) to monitor

conditions and remotely control devices in the field

• Identifies the most likely location of faults based on device feedback (previously relied largely on customer calls)

• Alerts operators, via alarms, when a condition arises that is out of normal operating range.

• Provides analysis on loading and power flow characteristics.

• Ability to run operational scenarios in “study” mode.

• Self Healing capability (future)• Primary requirement to maintain an “Operational

Model” that is in sync with current field conditions.
