We want to take this opportunity to thank all our
volunteers, sponsors, donors and their families.
We cannot achieve these milestones without
your continued support.
We want to thank Bay Area Tamil Manram and
Bharati Tamil Sangam for supporting this
project from the beginning.
Our special thanks to cast and crew of Abirami
Fine Arts for working tirelessly to bring this play
to us. Out of passion for this art form and being
staunch supporters of CIF, actors have spent
their own money in making the colorful
costumes you are going to see today! You can be
rest assured that 100% of your donations will go
directly to this project.
We thank you once again for being here this
afternoon. Now sit back, relax and enjoy!

“veLLOttam” Synopsis
The Pandiya dynasty was an ancient Tamil
dynasty, one of the three Tamil dynasties. The
early Pandiyas ruled parts of Southern India
from at least 4th century BCE. They ruled their
country Pandya Nadu from Madurai. The
Pandiya empire was home to temples including
Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, among
others.
This play focuses on the Pandiya King
Nedunchezhiyan, who is considered the greatest
of all the early Pandiya kings. It is said that a
coalition of his neighbors including the Cheras,
Cholas and five other kingdoms, met him at a
pitched battle in Talaialanganam, in present-
day Tanjore district. Nedunchezhiyan emerged
victorious in the battle and came to be known as
Talaialanganathu Seruvendra Pandiyan.
The play depicts the foiled plot on the life of
Nedunchezhiyan’s son, Ukkira Peruvazhudi, the
weddings of his son, Ukkirap Peruvaludi, his
foster son Poovazuthi, and Nedumara Valluvar
(who later becomes Thiruvalluvar in later years).
The play starts on the first day of Chitthirai
Thiruvizha (festival) in Madurai Meenakshi
Amman Temple and end on the last day of
Chitthirai Thiruvizha 51 years later.
Due to 50 years of famine in Tamil Nadu, the
Tamil Sangam was dispersed. The play also
depicts the resurrection of Tamil Sangams.
These were assemblies of Tamil scholars and
poets that, according to traditional Tamil
accounts, occurred in the remote past. Legend
has it that the third assembly of the Sangam was
held in the present-day city of Madurai. Poetry,
music and dancing were popular among the
people of the Sangam age. They were experts in
folk songs and folk dances. The arts of music and
dancing were highly developed.
The play ends with the release of the one of the
legendary works, Thirukkural to the world.
The play is staged by Abirami Fine Arts and is
completely produced and presented by local
talents in the Bay Area.
