The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department (LASD) supports the proposed empirical study of radicalization and violent extremism in the United States submitted for DOJ funding by the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission (City HRC) and Missouri State University (MSU). The experimental study’s focus on using randomly-selected Internet and social media content to evaluate response from targeted audiences with radicalization potential will enable law enforcement and community partners to better hone preventative programs and budgets that can increase support for actionable policies with clearly-demonstrated effects.

Given the long-term partnership and CVE outreach efforts that both LASD and City HRC have been effectively engaged in, we feel that the findings of the purposed research will further inform our collective efforts. We are particularly interested in better understanding effective social media engagements as preventative tools.

As a key law enforcement agency in one of the proposed study’s targeted geographic area, the LASD will provide support to the City HRC and MSU team in the following ways:

1) Provide unclassified content for the randomized social media content.2) Indicate a list of groups or profiles the department identifies as having a propensity

for extremism.3) Partner with City HRC and MSU to promote research findings with other law

enforcement agencies.4) Use findings to inform CVE policies and enhance development of prevention and

intervention programming.
