    If youre like most health-consciousAmericans over 40, youre probably takingone or more nutritional supplements. And

    if youre like many, you may be a tad disap-pointed at the results youre getting.

    If that describes you, then youll lovethis report. It reveals the missing linkthat prevents most people from getting theresults they should. Listed below are threesimple things you can do to make anyherbal remedy or nutritional supplementwork up to 500% better!

    These simple steps can make a dramat-ic difference in your health and well-being.

    (1) Buy Your Supplements Based onQuality Not Just Price

    The biggest reason supplements dontwork is they simply arent absorbed intoyour bloodstream very effectively. This canbe caused by two problems: The first has todo with the supplements; the second has todo with your body. Lets deal with the sup-plements first.

    Poor quality supplements dont breakdown effectively and, even when they do,they often break down in the wrong place.For instance, many take so long to breakdown, theyre in your intestines before any-thing happens. This prevents them fromgetting properly absorbed.

    Some vitamins have a higher potencythan others, some have better ratios of par-

    ticular nutrients, and some are betterabsorbed. You usually get what you pay for,so the least expensive supplements are

    often not the best.First, they tend to be lower in potency.

    You can tell this simply by looking at theingredients list on the label. In cheap sup-plements, the amount of each nutrient list-ed will be a fraction of the amount you real-ly need for optimal health. If you comparedthe cost ratio per ingredient, youll see veryquickly that you actually pay a lot more forcheap vitamins than you do for high-qual-ity supplements.

    Second, they tend to have the wrong bal-ance of nutrients. Frequently, their formulasare based on older research and are not thebalance that current scientific research sug-gests your body needs. That means yourepaying for supplements that just dont workvery well. Dont waste your money.

    Most importantly, they are not particu-larly well absorbed. This means that theamount of a nutrient on the label is muchless than the amount that gets into yourcells. In other words, youre not getting theamount you think you are.

    No supplements are 100% absorbed,but the cheaper ones tend to be much lessabsorbable than more expensive ones. If youdont buy supplements that break down andget used by your body, youre wasting yourmoney and fooling yourself about how muchyour body is actually getting.

    The form of vitamin or mineral you takeis even more important than how much youtake. The higher the quality, the more itgets absorbed. Each vitamin and mineralhas specific forms that are better absorbedthan others. Here are a few of them.

    Calcium, magnesium, and many otherminerals are best absorbed when they arebound to citrate, aspartate, picolinate, oramino acid chelate. Minerals need an acidicbase to break down and get used. If yourstomach does not produce enough stomachacid (hydrochloric acid) to help the absorp-tion of these nutrients, the form the miner-als take will give you the acidity you need toutilize them.

    The other problem with absorbability

    is the type of vitamin used. Is it the naturalform or the synthetic form? This makes ahuge difference. For instance, opponents ofnatural foods and natural supplements haveargued that synthetic vitamin E is just aswell absorbed as natural vitamin E.However, scientific studies show that natu-ral E is much better absorbed than the syn-thetic. When youre buying supplements,how can you tell which one is in the bottle?Simple. Your vitamin supplement will say

    either d-alpha-tocopherol or dl-alpha toco-pherol. You can remember which is naturaland which is synthetic by thinking, theextra l is for limited absorption. Dl-alphaforms of vitamin E are synthetic.

    But even within the natural supple-ments, there are differences. For example,most B vitamins will break down in yourbody just fine. But some forms dont need togo through your liver for your body to usethem. If you have hepatitis, are a recovering

    alcoholic, or suspect a clinical or sub-clinicalliver problem, you may want your supple-ment to contain an easy-to-absorb form ofthe B vitamins.

    Vitamin B6 is called pyridoxine. Yourliver has to metabolize it. On the otherhand, Pyridoxyl-5-phosphate, or P-5-P, is aco-enzyme form of vitamin B6. That is, itturns into B6 in your body, and does so

    without going through your liver. So itseasy to absorb and tolerate. Co-enzyme Bvitamins are best absorbed. If you think youwant co-enzyme Bs, look for Pyridoxyl-5-phosphate on the label as an indicator ofthe form of the B vitamins it contains.

    Finally, are capsules or tablets best forabsorption? It depends on the quality of thesupplement. Cheaper tablets may not disin-tegrate properly, while good quality ones do.Because some nutrients are best utilized inthe stomach and some in the small intes-tines, the better brands are formulated sothat the ones that need to be released first,in the stomach, are. Capsules are releasedin the stomach. Bottom line? Dont shop byprice; buy a good quality supplement.

    If your supplements arent working aswell as you think they should, it could bethe quality. Make sure youre buying thehighest quality available. If you are, andyoure still not seeing results, make sureyour body can digest them efficiently.

    (2) Solving Poor Digestion

    If youve looked at your supplementsand know youre buying the best qualitypossible, but they still arent working, the

    problem may be your stomach. The problemmay be your stomach isnt digesting thesupplements adequately. If you get gas,bloating, heartburn, or indigestion, youprobably have a digestive problem.

    Poor digestion can be caused by anovergrowth of bad bacteria or yeasts inyour digestive tract. H. pylori, clostridium,and Candida are just a few pathogenicbacteria and fungi that can cause ulcers,cramps, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal

    symptoms.

    The solution is easy. Just take probi-otics and other digestive enzymes.

    Youve probably heard of Lactobacillusacidophilus, and possibly bifidobacteriabifidus, as well. They are two of the mostcommon types of probiotics, and the moststudied. Acidophilus concentrates on thesmall intestines while bifidus lives in the

    large intestines, or colon. Both of them pro-duce enzymes that help digest foods. Theseenzymes also help ferment fiber found inbeans and other carbohydrates into fattyacids. One of these fatty acids is calledbutyric acid. Your colon uses it as a fuel.Interestingly, butyric acid is low in many

    people with digestive diseases like colitis,colon cancer, and irritable bowel disease.

    Acidophilus and bifidus both acidifyyour intestines. Since minerals need acid inorder to be absorbed in the small intestines,adding acidophilus to your diet can help youabsorb more of the minerals in your foods.Bifidus creates an environment in yourlarge intestines that kills pathogenic bacte-ria like staphylococcus and E. coli. Manypeople who get food poisoning from foodsthat contain harmful bacteria have low lev-els of probiotics. This is why food poisoningtends to affect children and older people themost. These populations, due to a high-sugar diet or years of poor eating, oftenhave insufficient friendly bacteria to handlepathogens.

    Bifidus also manufactures many of theB-complex vitamins. Since vitamin B12 isabsorbed in the large intestines, taking

    bifidus supplements could increase yourB12 levels if you are a vegetarian, or if youhave a B12 deficiency anemia.

    There are two ways of increasing pro-biotics. The first is to eat more foods thateither contain them (like sauerkraut,yogurt, tofu, miso, and tempeh) or feedthem. By the way, although yogurt containsacidophilus, its usually a very smallamount. Dont depend on yogurt to solveyour low-probiotic problem. Its just a good

    addition to your diet for extra support. Asubstance in fruit sugar (fructose) andgrains called fructooligosaccharides feedsfriendly bacteria. Eat one or two servings offruit every day to feed your friendly bacteria.

    The second way to increase probioticsis to take them in supplement form. If youdecide to take supplements, be aware thatmany of the products on the market are low

    in potency. The company should readily pro-vide you with its potency numbers.

    How long should you take probiotics?It all depends on the health of your intes-tines and on your diet, and how quickly youfeel a difference in your ability to digestyour foods. But health care practitionersfrequently suggest a three-month course ofany supplement. After three months, see ifyou notice a decline in your digestion whenyou discontinue taking probiotics. They aresafe to take for any length of time.

    (3) Another Cause of Poor Digestion

    Some vitamins (B12), minerals (includ-ing calcium and magnesium), and proteinsneed stomach acid to be absorbed properly.

    If you cant digest your foods and supple-ments, you cant get all of the nutrientsthey contain. Insufficient calcium and mag-nesium leads to osteoporosis. Not enoughvitamin B12 can contribute to anemia. Inaddition to selective malnutrition, you maynot feel satisfied after eating. This can leadto overeating and weight gain.

    Protein digestion depends on havingenough stomach acid. When your stomachreleases hydrochloric acid (HCl), it signals

    your body to make pepsin, an enzyme need-ed to digest various amino acids (parts ofproteins). Some of the amino acids that aredependent on pepsin and HCl preventdepression, anxiety, and insomnia. So yourmood can be directly related to insufficientstomach acid!

    But theres more. Bacteria that causedisease cant survive in the presence of acid.Bacteria live and colonize in the mouth,esophagus, and intestines, but they cant

    survive in a healthy stomach. Bacteria thatcause food poisoning, like E. coli and salmo-nella, cant live in a stomach with sufficientacid. This is why were more susceptible tofood poisoning as we age.

    As stomach acid declines, low acid-related disorders increase. These run thegamut from dermatitis to ulcerative colitis,gallstones, lupus, rosacea, stomach cancer,

    and all of the conditions mentioned earlier.Insufficient stomach acid is a huge problem.Too much stomach acid isnt.

    To fix a low stomach acid problem,simply buy hydrochloric acid (HCl) tabletsat your local health food store or on theInternet. Make sure you take them with

    food. And if youre taking anti-inflammato-ry drugs like steroids, aspirin, ibuprofen, orother NSAIDs, talk with your doctor beforetaking it. They may not interact safely.

    Which brand should you buy? It does-nt really matter. But since stomach acidtriggers the production of pepsin, make sureyour HCl supplement contains this enzyme.TwinLab sells HCl with pepsin throughhealth food stores. Talk with your doctor

    about the amount to take. When its notpossible to take HCl, take a graduallyincreased amount of either vinegar orlemon juice. This wont work as well asHCl, but it will help.

    (4) Toxins and Pollutants

    Finally, putting good stuff into yourbody isnt always enough. You also have totake the bad stuff out! If youre loading upon supplements, but havent taken all the

    toxins out of your system, the supplementssimply arent going to be as effective.

    The Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) recently (2001) releasedresearch showing the population at large ismuch more exposed to and contaminatedwith chemicals than previously thought.

    Today, at least 30,000 chemicals neverbefore seen on the planet are mass-pro-duced and released into the environment.We are digging up the earth and releasingliterally tons of naturally occurring heavymetals that nature had safely tucked awayin her innards. These, too, are making theirway into the food chain. We are adding amultitude of chemicals deliberately into ourfoods, calling them preservatives, and creat-ing hordes of artificial substances with propa-ganda that it is good for us (like margarine).

    Action to Take

    In order to detoxify your body, followthese easy steps:

    (1) Change your diet to eat only thethings God intended you to eat. Dont eatmeat from animals fed an unnatural diet.

    Dont eat fruits, vegetables, or grains thatare sprayed with pesticides. Avoid mar-garine and other fake foods, including mostvegetable oils and foods that contain preser-vatives. And drink water that is free of alu-minum, fluoride, and chlorine.

    (2) Stop smoking.

    (3) Work with a complementary doctorto wean yourself off of dangerous prescrip-tion drugs.

    (4) Have your mercury fillings removedby a biologic dentist.

    (5) Try a juice fast for a day every fewmonths.

    (6) Have chelation therapy performedon a regular basis, preferably every sixmonths. IV chelation is a simple doctor-administered treatment that will pull heavymetals out of your body. It can save yourheart, your brain, and the rest of yourorgans from damage done by metals.

    Chelation comes in several forms, but IVchelation is the best absorbed (at 100%,since it goes straight into your blood). Oralchelation is also effective, but its poorlyabsorbed. Suppositories split the differenceand can give you the most effectiveness forthe lowest price. And you dont have to goto the doctor. Whichever method you chose,chelation is vital for good health in thesepolluted times we live in. There are manyoral products on the market. Be sure to

    check the science they quote to make suretheir product works.

    Following some of these simplesteps could mean the difference betweensuccess and failure with supplements. Andnot only that, it could help improve thepower of your supplements by five timesor better.

    Since money isnt stretching as far asit used to, this is a good time for you to re-evaluate your supplements. Dont just stoptaking them or reach for the least expensiveones you can find. Vitamins, minerals, andother nutrients are either a wise invest-ment or a waste of money.

    Many people ask if its necessary totake supplements if they eat well. Theanswer is yes. Research shows the value ofboth a good diet and additional nutrients to

    get and keep you healthy. Even if youreeating nutrient-dense foods at every meal,its just about impossible to get enough ofeverything you need to stay healthy.

    Supplements are only valuable if yourbody can absorb them, and good-qualitysupplements those your body can easilyutilize are more expensive. But like anyother health insurance policy, theyre wellworth it. When youre financially strapped,you need insurance including supple-ments even more than before.

    Looking at Cost vs. Value

    You need to be able to afford your sup-plements, and they should be a good value.They need to work. Many companies usecheap materials that look good on labels,but dont break down in your body. No mat-ter what they cost, theyre not a good value.Supplements need to do more than look

    good. They have to contain the nutrientsyour body needs in a form that your bodycan use.

    Take calcium, for example. Some formsare poorly absorbed, contributing to arthri-tis and heart disease. Calcium carbonateand calcium hydroxyapatite are less wellabsorbed than calcium citrate. Every vita-min and mineral comes in forms that are

    better absorbed than others. Dry vitamin Eis better absorbed than the vitamin E gelcaps. Get value from your supplements bytaking those your body can use best.

    How to Bring Down the Cost

    Take a multi. If youre taking individ-ual vitamins and minerals rather than amultivitamin/mineral formula, youre pay-ing too much. You can save money by find-ing a formula that has all the nutrientsyour body needs in the necessary amounts.Although this may take some searching, itwill save you a bundle over the years.

    Get the right balance. The balance ofall nutrients is important. For instance,women need the right amount of calciumand magnesium. However, the majority ofcalcium/magnesium supplements containtwice as much calcium as magnesium.

    Women tend to be magnesium defi-

    cient, not lacking in calcium. So find amulti that contains equal amounts of calci-um and magnesium. Then if you need moreof either, you can get it in your diet or byadding it to your basic formula.

    Take what you need, not just every-thing that sounds good. Add extra nutrientsto your multi when you need them and takethem as long as necessary. If you havearthritis or fibromyalgia, an anti-inflamma-tory formula makes sense. But if your ten-

    donitis cleared up last year, stop taking itand see if its still necessary.

    Dont buy from MLMs (Multi-LevelMarketing companies) even if your bestfriend or a family member is selling them.They use a marketing approach that elimi-nates the middleman and sells their prod-ucts through word-of-mouth. MLMs allowpeople to set up their own company and

    work from home while promoting the prod-ucts they sell.

    While the overhead is low, the cost ofthese supplements is always higher thannormal because many levels of participantsare being paid from the sale of a singleitem. MLM vitamins are always moreexpensive than other similar formulas.

    If youre computer-savvy or have lotsof time for research, you can possibly findsupplements of good quality that cost less,especially if you buy them when theyre onsale. If you dont have the time or interestfor this, you can trust those sold byAdvanced Bionutritionals.
