best automation tools available if you

spend any kind of time in the Terminal

world with more than one networking

    device or server. Using the

    Commands feature, you can

duplicate a single command on as

many devices as possible in a single

    SuperPutty window. I will thoroughly

explain how to accomplish this as well as show you my favorite

features to enable (or disable) in this wonderful utility.

First off, realize that this utility is not a stand-alone utility. It is a

wrapper for the popular Putty program. Now, lets get Putty

downloaded so that we can install SuperPutty.

    Install SuperPutty

Navigate to the SuperPutty Download Page and download the

SuperPutty program you would like to download. I

downloaded the latest beta version (1.2.0.8) at the time of

    writing this post.

After extracting the .zip archive, place the SuperPutty-v1.2.0.8

    folder on your Desktop.

Navigate to the Putty Download Page, download

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

Navigate to the Putty Download Page, download

the putty.exe program and place it into the SuperPutty-

    v1.2.0.8 folder.

Double-click the SuperPutty.exe file and point the putty.exe

Location to the putty.exe file in the SuperPutty-v1.2.0.8 folder.

Now, change the location of the Settings Folder to

the SuperPutty-v1.2.0.8 folder as well so everything

SuperPutty-related is all in one place. It should look like the

    following:

Save Your Favorite Putty Settings In a Sample Template

If you like to customize Putty to have your favorite

background/font colors or customization, now is the time to do

that. You will thank me later.

Open up Putty, make your changes and save the session with

a name like MY PUTTY SETTINGS, like you see below:

Create Your First SuperPutty Device Session

Right-click on the PuTTY Sessions folder, click New Folder

and create whatever folder structure you would like. I started

off with two folders, one called SSH and another called

    Telnet.

Right-click the SSH folder, select New and the window below

    appears.

Enter whatever you would like to call your new session under

Session Name. I normally input a hostname here.

Input the IP Address into the Host Name/IP Address field.

Make absolutely sure that you change the PuTTY Session

Profile to the MY PUTTY SETTINGS selection that you

created earlier in the Putty window. That way, you will not

have to make your customization changes for all new

sessions that you create in SuperPutty.

Also, if you would like, feel free to input your username in the

Login Username field so you dont have to type it out every

time. When you are done, it should look something similar to

    the following:

    :

Complete this process for as many hosts as you have to

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

    manage.

Note: There is also another option to Import from PuTTY

Settings or Import from PuTTY CM Export if you want to

    explore either of those options.

I also like to auto-hide the Sessions and Layouts windows to

give me a little more screen real estate by clicking the two

    pins in this image:

Logging In to Two or More Devices and Using the Tabs

Once your new sessions have been created, double-click on

each of them to log into more than one at a time and watch

them fall under tabs next to each other.

It gets a little complicated here, but at this point, left-click and

hold on to the second session and drag it onto the bottom part

of the cross that appears as you see below:

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

At this point, both tabs will be visible.

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

    Using the Powerful Commands Feature

This is where it gets fun. At this point, type a command into

the Commands field and press Enter.

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

As you can see, the sky is the limit as to where this can be taken.

With this feature, you can do a large amount of work in a very short

period of time by jamming as many sessions in one window as you

can see the outputs. You can also create custom layouts and save

them for future use to really save yourself some time!

As always, dont be afraid to experiment with mass changes like

these. If you mess something up on a grand scale, guess what?

You can fix it on a grand scale as well. Can you see yourself

improving your productivity using this utility? If so, leave a comment

I am completely new to SuperPutty and trying to figure out

how to use layouts. Can layouts be changed after Putty

sessions are started? When I switch to a different layout it

closes all of the open sessions then opens each Putty

window ready to log in. Is that the way it is supposed to

work, or is there a way to get it to change the layout of

currently opened Putty sessions without closing them?

I like this tool but cannot get the colours to stick. when I

change the default fonts I am happy until I exit and restart.

Then the colours have regressed to the factory settings.

Even when I start a new session, my new defaults are not

    respected.

Any Ideas what I am doing wrong?

    Automation-Nation on February 11, 2014 at 6:53 am said:

@Gil: I apologize for not having time to write up a proper

reply, but re-read the Save Your Favorite Putty Settings In a

Sample Template section. Where it says I made a Putty

session called MY PUTTY SETTINGS. That Putty session

(That has my color settings as well as my other favorite

Putty tweaks) is then used on the SuperPutty session. After

you have created a SuperPutty session, right-click it and

click Edit. In the Edit Session window, find the drop-down list

for PuTTY Session Profile. Find MY PUTTY SETTINGS

    and click Save.

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

The next time you login to that SuperPutty session, it should

reference the color settings you saved in the MY PUTTY

SETTINGS Putty session. I hope this makes sense.

    Good luck!

Is there a way to automate the input of device specific

commands and pipe the output to a second command? I.e:

    Show ARP ip address

    Pipe out put to:

Show ip interface brief (interface from ARP IP address

    command)

If so, can someone help me figure the command syntax

    out?

    Thank you!

So am trying commands in multiple session and getting the

split tab as in here but command runs only on one host?

    Automation-Nation on March 7, 2014 at 9:32 am said:

@Suresh: When you open a new session, the default

should allow commands to be run on every session. To

check to make sure the option is active for that session,

right-click the session tab and make sure that Accept

Commands is checked. If it is not, click it and try the

Commands field again to make sure the command went to

that window. Then make sure all sessions have that option

checked. If it does not automatically get checked each time

a session is opened, I would see about opening a ticket with

the folks at http://code.google.com/p/superputty/ to report

    the bug.

Found an answer to the Missing menu bar.

The F3 key toggles the Menu bar. Remember to click on

the title bar, (do not be active within the Terminal session,

When the terminal window is in focus, F3 key does not

    work).

Or, (hard way) There is a settings file. (exit the superputty

    program).

    (On Win7, c:\users\\SuperPutty.settings ).

This is an xml file. Here look for setting ShowManuBar, and

    make it True.

In the worst case, delete the settings file and start over.

    It a great software.

I need only one more thing.

I need to execute a shell script after I put user and

    password.

    How?

Please could you send me examples?

I put the next in the windows edit session:

    PuTTY session Profile= default settings

    Login Username= PePe

    Extra PuTTY Arguments= -pw pepe

Would I need to put any parameter if I need to execute a

    shell script after login?

    Thanks a lot !

    1. Create a putty profile.

    2. Put your command in Connection -> SSH (Remote

    Command)

    3. Save profile

    4. Select the profile in the Superputty session.
