INTRODUCTION

A NEW GENERATION OF ARFFV FOR ICAO “CATEGORY 10”

► The IVECO MAGIRUS SUPERDRAGON is an 8x8 Airport Rescue Fire

Fighting Vehicle designed and built in accordance to the ICAO and

NFPA latest requirements in terms of vehicle performances and

configurations.

► SUPERDRAGON is equipped with rear mounted IVECO TWIN ENGINES

POWER PACK and is specially designed to perform as a first

response appliance at aircraft emergencies, crash situations, fire

fighting and rescue at the biggest airports.

► The vehicle - fully equipped - is capable of reaching the scene of

emergency with rapidity, high mobility and safety. It is also

capable of discharging foam while the vehicle is in motion at high

speed forward and backward.

► The Allison fully automatic transmission provides a very fast

acceleration, a high speed and the maximum mobility on any

pavement in all seasons under all weather conditions.

► Easy operation, safety, reliability, easy access for repair and

maintenance are ensured.

► CANBUS technology has been adopted for the complete vehicle.

► SUPERDRAGON is able to function in different areas: on the sea

where there is a high humidity and on the high lands above the

sea level where the weather can be cold and dry.

► DISC-BRAKES provided with EBS - Electronic Brake System –

including ABS. Moreover an engine power brake ITB type (Iveco

Turbo Brake) is provided to assure high brake performances and

low components consumption

► The vehicle is pleasant in design and has a high quality finish and

painting. The SUPERDRAGON is built and designed following the

IVECO MAGIRUS ISO 9001 procedures.

AFTER-SALES SERVICE

The IVECO MAGIRUS DRAGON Series vehicles are built using serial standard

IVECO components. This condition ensures to the airport authorities the

possibility to use the worldwide IVECO network in order to access to remote

diagnostics, spare parts and all other connected services.

The engines used on our Dragon range vehicles are used on the IVECO

STRALIS range which is manufactured in Ulm (Germany). The ALLISON

gearbox installed is of a commercial type used on commercial vehicles, like

trucks, buses, etc. and therefore service and spare parts are available

through the ALLISON&IVECO SERVICE throughout the world.

Besides the above mentioned IVECO/ALLISON facilities, our “Customer

Service” for Airport Vehicles is well organized to provide faster responses to

worldwide Airports needs. Our “fast-moving spare parts” department is able

to deliver the requested spare parts within few days from the airport

request.

ENGINES

The vehicle is provided with an IVECO “TEP” (Twin Engines Power-Pack)

rear mounted, electronically controlled fuel injected 4-stroke: total power

1080 HP (794 Kw) with max. total torque 4200 Nm (EURO 3).

The IVECO “Twin Engines Power-Pack” has sufficient horsepower, torque

and speed characteristics to meet and maintain or exceed, all the specified

performance characteristics, and acceleration times.

OPERATIONAL MODE

- In DRIVING MODE both engines of the “Power Pack” will drive the vehicle

- In PUMPING MODE the left engine of the IVECO “Power Pack” will be

coupled through the power divider installed on the vehicle to drive the fire

pump at the maximum performances independently of the vehicle drive. The

second engine of the Power Pack will be fully independent to drive the vehicle

at different speeds in forward and reverse direction (Pump & Roll

operation).

- In EMERGENCY MODE: In case of failure of one of the two engines, the

remaining one can drive the vehicle and/or attack the fire (left engine).

Engine cooling system

Type: Water circulation cooling. The engines cooling and heating

system is designed to operate at full load without

overheating in ambient temperatures. The engines are

provided with an AC 230V heater/s.

Provision is made for the connection of the heating

elements by Rapid starting kit device installed on the

vehicle and supplied by means of a quick automatic Auto-

Eject plug/socket.

The heaters will keep the engines (water and oil) preheated

for immediate start up at full engines power.

DRIVELINE

Type: 8 x 8 all wheels drive chassis.

Gearboxes: Automatic transmission ALLISON with torque converter with

automatic controlled forward gears and 1 reverse.

A “lock-up” device prevents the converter from engaging

when pump and turbine rotating speed is the same, in this

way the hydrodynamic fluid does not flow and heats

useless.

Gearbox is provided with cooling systems that provides

thermal stabilization at temperature range -25°C to +50° C.

N° of speeds: 6 forward plus 1 reverse.

Transfer case: Heavy duty type with grinded spiral teeth gears in order to

reduce noise.

The transfer case includes a proportioning differential

providing permanent drive to the front and rear axles via a

torque divider, 50% to front axles and 50% to the rear

tandem axles. Differentials locks are provided and actuated

by a switch from cabin.

All axles (including front axles) are provided with

transversal driver-controlled differential locks. Transfer

case, front axles and rear axles are provided with

SUSPENSIONS

The suspensions are designed to allow the vehicle, loaded or unloaded, to

travel at high speed over paved road surfaces, and at moderate speeds over

rough or unimproved terrain.

Type: Rigid axle with independent suspension coil-spring

type. A variable rate coil spring in combination with a

V-rod/trailing rod system to guarantee superior off

road and high speed paved road capabilities. In

addition shock absorbers and stabilizer bars are

provided to meet the load capacity and handling

characteristics of the vehicle.

BRAKES

BRAKE SYSTEM EBS (Electronic Braking System)

Service brake: Operating by a pedal control valve acting on all wheels.

The chassis is equipped with dual circuit service air brakes

with Anti-locking Brake System (ABS) which complies to

ECE R 13 regulation and NFPA 414 recommendations.

• While braking on flat, dry road, speed 32÷0 km/h, main

brake actuates with delay of 5 m/sec.2

• While braking on flat, dry road, speed 30÷0 km/h,

emergency brake actuates with delay of 4 m/sec.2

Parking brake: Parking/emergency brake system – Independent fail safe,

spring applied, pneumatic activated release, two, (2) acting

on rear axles, two (2) chambers per axle are provided.

Parking brake warning light indicator on cab dashboard.

Additional features: brake cylinders with rapid opening

system to allow quick departure even in case of miss air

pressure.

Holding capacity minimum 20% slope.

Holding capacity of service brake: 50% slope.

Dryer: WABCO, one chamber air dryer.

PNEUMATIC SYSTEM

Pneumatic system: Including two air compressors – 630 cm3 each - with

desiccant dryer and wet/air pressure storage tanks with

moisture ejectors are provided.

Air connection pipes are provided with quick connections

and are made of plastic resistant to weather conditions,

chemicals, variable plus/minus temperatures and UV

radiation. They are also certified for use in pneumatic,

pressure braking systems mounted on vehicles.

Pneumatic systems is provided with light and sound

signalling in the cabin, actuating in case of pressure drop in

the system. Sound is also audible outside the cab besides

inside.

The system is provided with air tanks equipped with safety

and drainage valves.

Automatic drainage valves will be provided with heating

element powered from 24 V electrical installation.

A 230 V air compressor with automatic control system is

installed. This compressor is mounted inside the Rapid

Starting Kit provided with the vehicle, it maintains the

chassis air system at the minimum operation pressure

required.

WHEELS AND TYRES

Type: Single tyres on all axles, tubeless type with all terrain non

directional tread. The tyres are certified by the tire

manufacturer for high-speed use. All wheels are

interchangeable on all axles.

STEERING

Position: Steering controls are located in the centre–left side of the

cabin (425 mm from the centreline).

As alternative the steering controls are located at

centre-right of the cabin or at centre (in this case

seats configuration may vary).

Hydraulic power assisted steering system ECE-compliant is

provided. The design permits manual override in the event

of failure of power assist.

The wall-to-wall turning diameter of the fully loaded truck is

≤34 m. (less than 3 times its overall length - acc. to NFPA

414)

Steering column

adjustment: Provided for inclination (forward and backward) and

vertical.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Type: 24 Volt

Batteries: N.4, in series, 12V – 220 Ah. An electrically remote-

controlled battery main switch of vehicle’s engine and pump

is provided.

Master switch: Provided and installed within the cab in easy reach of the

driver. The master switch will bypass the radio, to ensure

that the radio is capable of being operated when the master

switch is in the "OFF" position.

Alternator: 28V – 180 A (2x90 A) for 5040 W

Protection: All circuits are protected against overload by a fuse box in

the cab.

RAPID STARTING KIT

Power supply: From external electric network, working at 230V 50 Hz

connected to the vehicle via electric cable and quick-release

plug (AUTO-EJECT type) with socket located at the rear part

of the vehicle.

Functions:

• Air-pressure charging for keeping the air pressure at

constant level in the pneumatic circuit;

• Automatic battery recharging complete with automatic

device for energy preservation;

Extra functions only for

very cold areas:

• Engines and gearbox pre-heating system

• Water/foam tank heating system

Others:

• An “on charge” warning light is installed into the

instrument panel. The warning light indicate when the

charger is in operation.

• One (1) loose cable, complete with plugs compatible with

the mentioned “auto-eject” socket is supplied with the

vehicle.

CABIN

Type: Modern and aerodynamic, large and comfortable, the IVECO

MAGIRUS forward control cab “panorama type” is provided

with large windscreen (in one single piece) and windows all

around the cabin and on the upper and lower part in order

to allow excellent visibility to the driver and to the crew

Material: Aluminium, corrosion resistant.

Construction: Design based on FEM (finite element method) is made by

aluminium self-supporting profile frame construction,

reinforced / bonded with deep formed metal panels.

Mounting: Independent of the remaining superstructure. Mounted via

permanently elastic rubber-metal elements.

Insulation: Cabin is thermally and acoustically insulated against noise

generated by running engine and pump. Noise level in the

cabin is < 80 dBA at 80 km/h. Under other working

conditions noise level does not exceed 88 dBA;

Seats (1+2):

• 1 (one) seat for the driver in the central-

left/central/central-right position

• 1 (one) seat for a co-driver beside the driver seat

• 1 (one) seat for the crew member located in the rear-left

side of the cab

• 1 (one) seat for the crew member located in the rear-

right side of the cab is available only with central-right or

central-left steering (on request)

The crew seats are provided with an integrated bracket for

SCBA (type 6,8 L).

All seats are equipped with heavy duty 3-point inertial

safety belts and headrest, and the dimensions are suitable

for sitting comfortably with the fire-fighting suits.

Doors:

Hinged type 90° opening doors. Doors are mainly

constructed in glasses in order to allow good side visibility

for the driver and co-driver. Door cabin access is provided

with ergonomic steps, lighting and holders.

Sliding type automatic opening towards the front

direction (bus-type) are available as optional. The system

provides that doors will shut automatically when the speed

of the vehicle will exceed 5 km/h.

Interior finishing: Floor and steps are made of non slip surfaces. Ceiling roof

and side wall are skinned by easy to clean material. The

interior of the cabin ensures easy access/exit to the right

and left and to the roof.

Additional heating

System: Heating system – Webasto type - is available as optional

for cold areas. It is independent from the engine and

provides heating for the cab during operation outside at low

Chassis control panel: Laid out so that information relating to automotive functions

are displayed centrally in front of the driver (see picture 2

and 3). Including multi-functional display with all indicators

and control instruments of chassis and engines. Positioned

in front of the driver behind the steering wheel.

Fire-fighting control panel:

Indicators and control units to control the whole fire-

fighting apparatus are located on “console” dashboards in

the cab, arranged to allow easy operation for the driver and

co-driver.

Provided between driver and co-driver, integrated by a wide

12" Touchscreen located in the upper part of the central

console (see picture 1 and 2).

All instruments and warning lights located in the panel and

control panel are illuminated by back-lighting. All panels are

easily removable for normal maintenance.

Touch-Screen 12" provides all info on pipe-line and control valves. Emergency system:

• in case of failure of electric systems there is possibility of emergency control of extinguishing installation;

• after activation of the “rapid start” switch a coloured display shows all operational parameters of the extinguishing installation;

All valves of the water/foam system are remote controlled

from the cab and manually controlled for emergency

situation from the locker.

Particular control systems are labelled for easy identification for inspection or repair. Operation devices are automated.

BODYWORK AND LOCKERS

Construction: Body frame is a modular system aluminium made in order

to be lightweight and completely corrosion proof. It is

designed to be resistant to variable static and dynamic

loads. The body allows very comfortable access to all the

components which require maintenance and repair. Opened

flaps, drawers and platforms, when protruding more than

250 mm beyond the vehicle contour, are equipped with

warning marks. Warning light in the cab is on when a locker

is open.

Storage lockers: N° 3 on each side of the vehicle, 2 on the lower side

between axles closed by light alloy roller shutters and 1

pump locker behind the water tank closed by hinged door.

All waterproof, with a quick release lock mechanism and

handle to operate them easily also using fire man gloves.

The lockers are provided with automatic controlled lighting,

vented and easily drained floors.

All lockers are provided with the necessary brackets or

straps, to secure equipment to avoid casual opening or

unlocking when the vehicle is in motion.

Pump locker: In a close compartment located between the “IVECO Twin

Engine Power Pack” and the water/foam tank.

Engine cover: Single unit made of aluminium, complete with side and top

hinged doors for inspection and maintenance.

Working deck: The upper surface of the tanks is lined by anti-slip material

consisting of Fiberglas and very thin quartz-sand, finally

colourless painted, in order to allow a safe walking-on.

A rear light alloy foldable ladder is provided for and easy

access to the vehicle roof. Protection rail (grab) hand rails

are provided for safe operations on the roof if the vehicle

with suitable lighting.

PUMP SYSTEM

vehicle movements at different speeds – front and rear,

allowing “full pump and roll operations”.

Engine actuation: From the dashboard in the cab and operation panel outside

the vehicle. Start-up is automatically repeated.

Battery: Starting battery with 12 V 220 Ah, sufficient for proper

energy balance with easy access for assembling,

disassembling, replacement and servicing.

Model: IVECO MAGIRUS automatic foam proportioner “Around

the pump” electronic type, providing a proportioning system

rate up to 10.000 lpm.

Material: Corrosion resistant light alloy.

Function: After the pump engaging, the foam system has just to be

switched on and the correct amount of foam compound will

be automatically admixed.

The system makes possible to admix the correct amount of

foam compound to the water, independently from pump

pressure and/or discharge output. The foam proportioning

system is suitable for all commonly used foam compounds

(type A & B), as well as synthetic foam compounds and

A.F.F.F. .

Admixing The rate of admixing can be set from the cabin by an

electric-control from the dashboard.

The selection is done from the cabin control panel by means

of three pre-set switches fixed at 1% - 3% - 6%.

When the system is actuated, concentration value is set to

6%.

Flushing: A flushing system is provided to clean the pump and all the

fire fighting piping contacted by the foam solution by using

clean water and discharging through the monitors or any of

the side lines. Flushing operation is controlled from the

dashboard by a switch and indicator light.

The piping system is made in such a way to avoid that the

foam goes into the water tank.

General: Electric equipment meets traffic regulations concerning

special vehicles.

Electrical fuses are grouped together in a suitable position

colour coded and are clearly identified for easy maintenance

operations.

Control system: Easy and clear comfortable push button system allowing

immediate action and use also while wearing fire fighting

gloves.

Vehicle lighting system:

N°4 front head lamps (high and low beam) N°2 front fog lights

N°2 rear stop lights

N°2 reverse lights operated by selecting the reverse gear

Additional buzzer: warning sound connected to the reverse

speed gear

Wheels rims: Black (RAL 9005): standard

Lockers: Silver-Aluminium RAL 9006

Painting powder tank: Red RAL 3000

Painting of greasy

points: Yellow RAL 1016

Marking and logo: On the bodywork according to Customer’s request.

Protective treatment: Treatment by sound-deadening paint, under the vehicle.

The vehicle parts are painted before and after assembling.

Reflective stripes: The vehicle will be delivered with special decoration made of

special reflective stripe in order to increase the vehicle

visibility.

STANDARD ACCESSORIES

Standard Accessories:

• N°4 hand lamps with recharger in the cab (powered from

24 V vehicle installation);

• N°4 wheel blocking wedeges

• N°1 set of vehicle tools;

• Wheel-air pump with manometer;

• Wheel wrench and wheel spanner;

• Hydraulic jack capable of raising the un-laden vehicle for the

changing of wheels (25 kN);

• Mud flaps are fitted to the rear of the front and rear wheels

and between the first and second axle.

Spare tyre: N°1, supplied loose
