MAGNETIC SEPARATION

Magnetic separation is a technique which allows materials with different magnetic properties to be separated by the use of magnetic fields. The separation is achieved using a magnetic field which generates a force on magnetisable particles.

Page 9: superconductivity and its application

At its most basic, magnetic separation is demonstrated in scrap metal in which a simple electromagnet is used to lift ferrous from non-ferrous waste. Current technologies can extend the technique for the removal of very small, weakly magnetic particles from liquid or gas flows using powerful superconducting magnet technology.

SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET

A superconducting magnet is an electromagnet made from coils of superconducting wire. In its superconducting state the wire can conduct much larger electric currents than ordinary wire, creating intense magnetic fields. No energy is dissipated as heat in the windings. They are used in MRI machines in hospitals, and in scientific equipment such as NMR spectrometers, mass spectrometers and particle accelerators.

SUPERCONDUCTING HIGH GRADIENT MAGNETIC SEPARATOR The HGMS separators and filters are

designed around a unique magnetic system with high capacity matrix material which together produces the required high magnetic field gradient to enable the capture of normally weakly magnetic or paramagnetic minerals.

It works on the principle of superconducting magnet.

WORKING The Quantum Design SHGMS system features

two independent processing canisters which are switched in and out of the magnetic field. One canister processes material inside the magnetic field until it is fully loaded with magnetic components while the other is cleaned simultaneously outside the magnet. The canisters are then exchanged automatically so that the clean canister moves inside the magnet and begins to processes material while the loaded canister is cleaned outside the field. This sequence repeats and results in continuous processing.

APPLICATIONS OF SHGMS TECHNOLOGY Purification of kaolin (also known as

China Clay) to increase its brightness, and thereby significantly increase its value.

SHGMS is capable of extracting and concentrating very small particles of weakly magnetic materials.

The food, pharmaceutical and biochemical industries.
