Midwest and finished on top across the South in Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas - in addition to Oklahoma. He gained an unexpected victory in Texas, where he was neck-and-neck with Sanders for much of the night, and the New England state of Maine was not called in his favour until Wednesday afternoon. Sanders opened Super Tuesday as the undisputed Democratic frontrunner and was in a position to claim an insurmountable delegate lead. And while he scored the night’s biggest delegate-prize in California, he scored just three other decisive victories, winning his home state of Vermont, along with Utah and Colorado. In Biden and Sanders, Democrats have a stark choice in what kind of candidate they want to run against Trump.Biden racked up his victories despite being dramatically outspent and out-staffed. Moderate rival Bloomberg, for example, poured more than $19m into television advertising in Virginia, while Biden spent less than $200,000. Bloomberg spent more than half-a-billion dol-lars in Super Tuesday states overall. Black voters have been key to Biden’s success. Biden, who served two terms as President Barack Obama’s vice president, won 60 per-cent of the black vote in Ala-bama, where African Ameri-cans made up more than half the Democratic electorate on Tuesday. Bloomberg earned 25 percent and Sanders won about 10 percent of African American votes, according to AP VoteCast, a wide-ranging

survey of the electorate.Perhaps another theme of the night was long lines. Some voters in Texas report-ed waiting up to five hours to vote. By 11:30pm in the state, lines were reported in several places, including Texas Southern University.

“If you’re in line to vote, stay in line!” Sanders tweeted late in the night. The ultimate nominee must ultimately claim 1,991 delegates, which is a major-ity of the 3,979 pledged delegates available this primary season.

Lewis Urges Voting During ‘Bloody Sunday’Anniversary In Selma

The Georgia Democrat and civil rights icon spoke on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where he and others faced state-sanctioned violence for peacefully marching. Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) made a surprise appearance at Sunday’s commemorative “Bloody Sunday” march in Selma, Alabama, urging at-tendees to use their right to vote “to redeem the soul of

America.” White Alabama state troopers fractured Lewis’ head when he was 25 years old on what became known as Bloody Sunday, when Lew-is and several hundred other voting rights activists faced state-sanctioned violence for peacefully marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge from Selma to Montgomery on March 7, 1965.

Incredible moment in the middle of the Edmund Pettus bridge during #Selma55 bridge crossing.

THE DAY AFTER 9/11, SADDIQ HOLLIDAY WALKED INTO AN AIR FORCE RECRUITERS OFFICE.

HE’S BEEN SERVING HIS COUNTRY AND HIS COMMUNITY EVER SINCE.

Why did you join the military?

After the attacks on 9/11, it was the first time in my life as a civilian that I felt I had no way to protect my family. I felt that if I was able-bodied and able to stand guard over our country, I needed to do it in some capacity.

What was your job in the Air Force?

Initially, I was a weapons systems airman on fighter aircraft. I later became a systems technician and maintained electrical and support components of the aircraft.

How did your military experience prepare you for your career at Dominion Energy?

Dominion Energy is really good at looking at your military experience and finding the right fit for you within the organization. For me, my experience in electronics was a natural fit, and I started as a customer projects designer working on the distribution of energy to homes and businesses.

How does Dominion Energy support its veterans?

Everyone at Dominion Energy, including management, is supportive. It’s like a family here, and we have each other’s back.

We cover for each other under many circumstances, including military leave. Dominion Energy does go above and beyond by covering the difference between our military pay and our Dominion Energy salary when we are called to duty. It makes a big

difference knowing your family won’t take a financial hit while you’re

serving your country.

What’s your current position at Dominion Energy?

I’m now a strategic staffing specialist for Human Resources. Through the Troops to Energy Jobs program, which connects

our nation’s military veterans to careers in energy fields, I

help service members and veterans transition their skills to the energy industry.

How many pushups can you do?

Not as many as I could in boot camp.

The commemorative gath-ering honored the Selma pro-test and those who suffered in the fight to ensure voting rights for Black Americans. “Fifty-five years ago, a few of God’s children attempted to march from Brown Chapel AME Church across this bridge,” Lewis, 80, said in a passionate speech on Sunday. “We were

beaten, we were tear-gassed. I thought I was go-ing to die on this bridge. But somehow and some way, God almighty helped me.” “I thought I was going to die on this bridge.”The Georgia congress-man’s remarks came as the Democratic primary ramps up, with South Carolina voting on Saturday and 14 additional states voting in

the upcoming Super Tuesday primaries this week. Lewis used the moment of the pri-maries and the nature of the Selma march to encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote. “We cannot give up now. We cannot give in. We must keep the faith, keep our eyes on the prize,” he said. “We must go out and vote like we never, ever voted before.”

Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1986 to serve Georgia’s 5th district, which encompasses much of Atlanta. He is often referred to as “the conscience of Congress” and is widely re-spected on both sides of the aisle. Lewis frequently talks about getting into “good trouble,” a reference to his repeated arrests during his time as a civil rights activist. Lewis on Sunday brought up the necessity for those attending the march to make “good trouble.” “Some people gave more than a little blood, some gave their very lives. So to each and every one of you, especially you young people … go out there,” he said. “Speak up, speak out. Get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” It was unclear in advance whether the congressman would be able to participate in the Sunday march, after he was diagnosed in Decem-ber with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Lewis said he is un-dergoing treatment and that he intends to keep serving his district as he does. “I’m not gonna give up. I’m not gonna give in. I’m gonna continue to fight. We need your prayers now more than ever before,” Lewis said on Sunday. “We must use the vote as a nonviolent instru-ment or tool to redeem the soul of America.”

Athletic trainers are certified professionals who help your student athlete in case of injury and develop important return to play protocals.

Does My Kid’s Sports Team Really Need an Athletic Trainer? (Yep!)

Could the Browns trade up for Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons?

You’re chatting with your teen about sports practice when your budding ath-lete mentions the school’s athletic trainer. Admit it: Your first thought was, “The school’s what?” If you’re a little fuzzy on the whole athletic trainer thing, you’re not alone. So what do these profession-als do for student athletes and sports teams? Athletic trainer supervisor Manny

Economos, AT, separates the facts from the fiction.Myth: Athletic trainers are the same as personal train-ers. No, they’re different. (But it’s a little confusing with those similar names.) Here’s the scoop: Personal trainers are fit-ness instructors who develop exercise programs for clients and help them reach their fitness goals.

Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who help prevent, assess and treat sports injuries and other medical problems. Myth: The athletic trainer’s only job is to treat sports injuries. Treating sprains, stress fractures and the like is a big part of the job. But that’s just for starters. “Pre-vention, treatment, rehabili-tation — athletic trainers

perform many tasks,” Econo-mos explains. “Think of us as a healthcare resource for athletes.” An athletic trainer can: Assess and treat inju-ries: They assess and treat orthopaedic injuries such as sprains and torn ligaments. Help with rehab: Once the injuries have healed, athletic trainers play a key role in rehabilitation. And they often develop return-to-play protocols to help players get back in the game safely. Provide emergency care: Athletic trainers are trained to jump in when there’s an emergency, including cardiac arrest or a spinal injury. They can administer CPR if someone stops breathing or use an automated external defibrillator (AED), an elec-tronic device that can restart a stopped heart. Assess and treat concus-sions: Athletic trainers assess athletes for signs of concussion and help them return to play safely. Treat sports-related illnesses: From heatstroke to stomach bugs, athletic trainers can spot all sorts of illnesses, and often treat them, too. (And they can

help coordinate care with your child’s doctors.) Work on injury preven-tion: Athletic trainers help athletes understand best practices and healthy habits to prevent them from get-ting hurt in the first place. Myth: Anyone can be an athletic trainer. Sure — but only if they do the work and get certi-fied. Athletic trainers are required to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited athletic training program. The majority have a master’s degree or higher. To become a certified “AT,” they have to pass an exam given by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer.Myth: Athletic trainers are for the pros. Not at all. Athletic train-ers in high schools were less common a generation ago, so don’t feel bad if you’re not up to speed. But these days, more and more high schools — and even middle schools — are adding athletic train-ers to the staff. In other words, your student athlete is probably much more familiar with athletic trainers than you

Hey, Mary Kay: Any chance the Browns could trade up for Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons? — 440 area code. Hey, 440: Browns GM Andrew Berry said at the NFL combine this week that he’ll be flexible about trading up or down, and I believe he’s open to anything that will make the Browns better. With Simmons rock-ing a 4.39 in the 40 -- for a 238-pound linebacker -- and nailing the rest of his NFL combine workout Saturday night, he won’t be available to the Browns at No. 10. In fact, after his blistering 40, ESPN’s Louis Riddick surmised he won’t go lower

Clemson Line Backer Isaiah Simmons

Q & A With Mary Kay Cabot - “Hey Mary Kay”

than No. 4. He’s a versatile, game-changing, disruptive hybrid linebacker who can cover, rush, tackle and more. He’s perfect for today’s game, and an antidote for the Travis Kelces and George Kittles of the NFL. If the Browns can find a left tackle elsewhere, it would be aw-fully tempting to try to to move up for Simmons. But I’m guessing they’ll stay put and select the best heir to Joe Thomas available. Hey Mary Kay: What do you make of the Browns even bringing up the possi-bility of trading OBJ? Do you think there’s a chance he’ll be traded? — 773. Hey, 773: I think Andrew

Berry struck the right note when he said he’ll listen to offers for Odell Beckham Jr. and others. He didn’t slam the door shut on trading Beckham, and that’s the appropriate response. Most players have a price, and he didn’t acquire Beckham in the first place. But I think the Browns are committed to keeping Beckham here and getting the most out of him in 2020 in this new offense and with what they hope will be a rejuvenated Baker Mayfield. I’m sure teams will call, but as Berry noted, most trade talk is hollow. Hey, Mary Kay: With the free agency and the draft approaching, do you see the Browns upgrading their run defense in any way over the next two months, as it was in the bottom third of the league again? — 330 Hey, 330: I definitely be-lieve the Browns will make a concerted effort to upgrade their run defense by adding some defenders and by wel-coming Myles Garrett back

See Mary Kay Page 9 See Trainers Page 10

into the fold. They lost a lot of key defenders to injury last season, including Olivier Vernon, Morgan Burnett and Christian Kirksey. Even though they’re prepared to let Joe Schobert walk, I think they will add a few key defensive players in free agency and draft some to shore up the porous defense. New defensive coordinator Joe Woods is very big on tackling and technique, and the run D promises to be better. Hey, Mary Kay: Many talent evaluators have left the team. Andrew Berry said that wasn’t a problem. Who are the evaluators left on the team he is speaking of? — Fred D., North Canton Hey, Fred: Berry is talking about execs such Director of Pro Scouting Dan Saganey and Assistant Director of Pro Scouting Glenn Cook. Berry has also brought former Browns personnel exec Ryan Grigson back on board as a consultant and will add him full-time after the draft. But you’re right. The Browns lost a lot of experienced and accomplished evalua-tors when John Dorsey, Eliot Wolf, Alonzo Highsmith and Director of College Scouting Steve Malin were let go. For-tunately for Berry, he’s been scouting all of these players since the fall and just has to make sure he’s drafting for the current coaching staff. Hey, Mary Kay: Everything we’re hearing about all the coaches and GM is eerily familiar to what we heard last year. All of you seem so positive that it will work this time. Are you just drinking the same Kool-Aid but a different flavor? If not, why not? — 216 Hey, 216: I believe that each new head coach and GM deserves a chance to come in and prove they can do the job without being

condemned before they’ve played their first game. Do we know for sure it’s going to work? No. The Browns are trying something new again, going with a very young duo in Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski, who are rookies in their new roles. They’re also reverting to a heavy emphasis on analytics in all aspects of football, including player performance, and that will take some getting used to. But Berry and Stefanski check off a lot of boxes of highly successful people, and deserve a chance to show what they can do. Hey, Mary Kay: Please tell me we are going to keep Rashard Higgins. — 216 Hey, 216: I think there’s a chance Higgins will be able to command more on the open market, so my guess is that he’ll test the free-agent waters first. If he doesn’t get what he wants, he could re-sign with the Browns at a lower price. I know he’d like to be here with Baker Mayfield, and that there was no way that was going to happen if Freddie Kitchens was back. Hey, Mary Kay: At No. 10, left tackle is the obvious need with the super talent that will be there. Will they also fill the right tackle spot in free agency or the draft ? — Bud Genovese, President, Bay Area Browns Backers Hey, Bud: Yes, they will also look to upgrade the right tackle spot in free agency or the draft. There are several right tackles due to become free agents in Jack Conklin and Bryan Bulaga, and they are on the Browns’ radar. If they land one in free agency or in a trade, it frees them up to draft other positions. I believe they’ll try to add a starting left tackle, starting right tackle and a starting right guard.

“Some kids don’t want to come see us because they’re afraid they’ll be taken out of the game. But our goal is to treat injuries early so we can keep them in the game,” Economos says. No parents like to imagine their child getting hurt during a game or practice. But it’s nice to know there’s a healthcare pro on hand, just in case.

are! Still, it never hurts to remind your child that ath-letic trainers are a resource they can rely on. They might be a little unclear on the whole thing too — espe-cially if they’re new to team sports. And sometimes, kids are hesitant to talk to the athletic trainer if they think something is wrong.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Between people who are

in close contact with one an-other (within about 6 feet).Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected

person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or

possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Can someone spread the virus without being sick? People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occur-ring with this new coronavi-rus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. from person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (spread easily), like measles, while other viruses do not spread as easily. Another factor is whether the spread is sus-tained, spreading continually without stopping. The virus that causes CO-

VID-19 seems to be spread-ing easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.

By the early 1980s, 50-year-old Cleveland Munici-pal Stadium was showing its age. It had never possessed the charm of Boston’s 1912 Fenway Park or Chicago’s 1914 Wrigley Field, two baseball fields beloved by their fans. Instead, it was born of a compromise that dictated it be a multipurpose building. In the end, it was comfort-able for neither baseball nor football fans. It also was the first publicly owned major sports facility. The push for a new stadium began in earnest in 1983, when the estate of F.J. “Steve” O’Neill put the Indians up for sale. Then, on the night of March 12, 1984, in Baltimore, moving vans pulled up to the train-ing facility of the Colts and picked up all of the helmets, shoulder pads, footballs and other property of the NFL team and headed west to Indianapolis. The concern suddenly became: Would the Indians be the next team to pull up

stakes? The history In 1984, Cuyahoga County commissioner Vincent Cam-panella proposed a $150 million domed stadium south of Public Square. On May 9 of that year, voters rejected a proposal to pay for the domed stadium with an addi-tion to the sales tax. But by 1989, Michael R. White was mayor of Cleveland, and he and the Cuyahoga County commis-sioners came up with a plan for a baseball- only stadium to satisfy the Jacobs broth-

ers. At White’s insistence, the plan would include an arena to bring the Cleveland Cavaliers back to the city from Richfield’s Coliseum, which Cavs owner Nick Mileti had privately built for $17 million in 1972. The Gateway financing plan was based on a new tax that came to be called the “sin tax.” It was designed to provide half of the cost of the complex, on a 28-acre site that had been home to the Central Market and food-related retailers. The 15-year tax would add 1.9 cents to

the cost of a 12-ounce beer, 1.7 cents to a 5-ounce glass of wine, 3.7 cents per shot of liquor and 5 cents to a pack of cigarettes. The rest of the cost would be borne by private sources, includ-ing the teams, or by the buildings’ users, in the form of licenses for loges and premium seating. On May 8, 1990, 51.7% of county voters approved Issue 2. The Gateway Economic Development Corp. was created, and planning for the two facilities could move ahead. The cost was expected to be $344 million, though it didn’t quite work out that way — because of changes, delays and rising costs, the final tab would be in the neighborhood of $425 million, with the public pick-ing up the excess. On April 4, 1994, Presi-dent Bill Clinton threw out the ceremonial first pitch at

Jacobs Field; the baseball team owners had paid for naming rights. It took 11 innings for the Indians to defeat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 before a sellout crowd of 41,459. Why it matters today Though it was never a strong selling point at the time the sin tax was up for a vote, the role the Gateway project has played in the development of downtown Cleveland has been signifi-cant. The Gateway footprint at the time encompassed a hodgepodge of aging build-ings, including the Central Market, an Army-Navy store and storefronts that sold hats, wigs, shoes and clothing. On its last legs, too, was Record Rendezvous, the record store owned by Leo Mintz that sponsored the first ever rock and roll concert. That concert, and Mintz’s store, were key to Cleveland landing the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “If you want that quality of life that having sports teams provide, you have to subsidize it, and it is better to subsidize the venue than to subsidize the teams....” — Thomas V. Chema, executive director of the Gateway Economic Development Corp. from its inception in 1990 until June 1995.

The first event at Gateway was a Pittsburgh Pirates-Cleveland Indians exhibition game on April 2, 1984.
