College Bound: Step by Step College Readiness Department, HISD Room: Auditorium College Bound: Step by Step will explore what is college, ways to prepare your child for college, and resources to pay for college. Language: English/Spanish Translation Helping Your Student Decide What to do After High School East End Chamber of Commerce Room: 102 Come learn how to prepare your child for college or technical school, and what you must do to ensure your student is on the path to success. Explore what jobs require degrees, certifications, etc., and what local opportunities are present for your student to find rewarding careers in their own backyard. Language: Spanish Library Services: The Digital Age Library Services Department, HISD Room: 114 Find out how to access and use the Free Digital Resources offered by Houston ISD. Learn how to help your child with homework, research, and digital tools that can enhance your child’s learning! Language: English/Spanish Translation Disability Awareness and Identification Special Education Department, HISD Room: 103 Come learn indicators of disabilities such as speech impairments, dyslexia, autism, and emotional disabilities. Families will gain an understanding of how to access the referral process and the intent of Special Education services. Language: English/Spanish Translation Parent Engagement – Why does it Matter? Texas PTA Room: 110 Come learn the different types of engagement – school, community, state – and the similarities between these forms of engagement. Examples will be shared of how easy it is to engage in ways that make a difference for your children, your family, your school and your community. Language: English Connecting Kids to Health Coverage Health Services Department, HISD Room: 101 Your child or teen may qualify for free or low cost health insurance through Children's Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Come determine if CHIP or Medicaid is right for your family, and receive free assistance with the application process. Language: English Healthy Eating for Families Nutrition Services, HISD Room: 113 Want to learn how to eat more healthfully? Healthy Eating for Families discusses creating healthy meals, healthy snacks for kids, how to get kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, healthy beverages choices, reading food labels and more! Applying to College will provide a detailed overview of how to go from grade school to college. The Houston Public Library will be available to register families for library cards, provide literacy information, and give families updates on all the resources the HPL has to offer! Language: English 7 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed Space City Tutoring Room: 102 Families will be introduced to seven concrete strategies that can use to support their children's academic success.
