Joe Montana: Bengals fans, you might want to skip this paragraph. Montana victimized Cincinnati twice in the Super Bowl, leading his 49ers to victories in both Super Bowl XVI and XXIII. But it was the latter game that showcased Joe Cool at his most clutch. Not only did Montana pass for a then-Super Bowl record 357 yards, but he drove his team 92 yards in 11 plays for a 20-16 come-from-behind win. Montana threw a 10-yard pass to receiver John Taylor with just 34 seconds left to win the third of his four Super Bowl titles.

Adam Vinatieri: The most clutch kicker of our time? You can certainly make the argument, as Vinatieri pro-vided the decisive points in each of the New England Patriots first three Super Bowl wins in XXXVI, XXX-VIII and XXXIX. His game-winning field goals in the first two games came in the closing seconds, and lets not overlook the fact that he pro-vided the game-winning field goal in the snow in Foxborough during the Patriots first playoff run with Tom Brady at quarterback. Vinatieri provided three more field goals in Super Bowl XLI to help the Pats win a fourth championship.

David Tyree: With defender Rodney Harrisons hand in his face, Tyree hauled in Eli Mannings 32-yard pass, pinning the ball against his helmet and giving the Giants a first down on the drive that resulted

in the late touchdown that gave New York the 17-14 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Manning escaped the three defenders who almost sacked him on the play, and Plaxico Burress caught the game-winning touchdown later in the drive, but Tyree provided one of the most clutch catches in NFL history.

Santonio Holmes: Speaking of clutch catches, Super Bowl XLIII also came down to a late touch-down. It was Holmes (named the games MVP for his nine-catch, 131-yard performance) who toe-tapped in the end zone while falling out of bounds to secure the game-winning touchdown in the Steelers come-from-behind 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The 6-yard catch in the back of the end zone came with just 35 seconds left in one of the most exciting Super Bowls to date.

Malcolm Butler: Perhaps the most clutch defensive performance ever came in last years Super Bowl, when Malcolm Butler secured the Patriots 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. With everyone expecting the Seahawks to run the ball from the 1-yard line, Russell Wilson stepped back to pass, surprising everyone except Butler, who stepped in front of Ricardo Lockette for the interception and secured his place in New England Patriots and Super Bowl - lore.

Clutch performers5 of the Super Bowls greatest moments

After what seems like years of Super Bowl games that were decided early and definitively, weve been spoiled of late with close game after close game. And with close games come clutch performances.

Here are five such Super Bowl performers, with apologies to the many others from the first 49 editions of the big game who are not included:

Kathryn Smith becomes first-ever female coach in NFLBY FRED STABBERT III

It really wasnt a big surprise thatBuffalo Bills Head Coach Rex Ryanliked the work which KathrynSmith was doing. So when he named her Quality

Control Coach - Special Teams latelast month, the media should haveknown she earned it.But the national media, from ESPN

to Newsday to all the major sportsradio shows in between, talked abouthow Rex Ryan had done somethingwhich no NFL head coach had everdone named a woman as an assis-tant NFL coach. She worked very, very hard [to get

where she is], Bob Smith, her dadand former Sullivan County resident, said. The real message was fight foryour chance and outwork everybodywhen you get your chance.Thats how she got her job, Bob

said. Shes very detail-oriented.Rex is very sincere, he is what he

is, Bob said. And while some media have called

Rexs pick of Kathryn part visionary, part publicity stunt, Bob said the firstis more like it.You cant afford a token appoint-

ment [in the NFL], he said.Rex named the best person for the

    job he could find.

Started from the ground upHer parents, Ann and Bob Smith,

had moved the family from LakeHuntington to DeWitt, near Syra-cuse, when Kathryn was just sixmonths old so dad could practicelaw.Kathryns love of sports began at the

age of six when she started to swimcompetitively. An athlete, Kathryn played on her

undefeated Little League team andthen entered middle school at Chris-tian Brothers Academy betterknown as CBA one of the topschools in the Syracuse area. She swam on the team and played

lacrosse for six years, Bob said. And

she also was on the bowling team[because she needed something todo in the winter months].But where did she get her love of

football? The varsity coach at CBA asked me

to do statistics for the team, Bobsaid. I agreed and Kathryn helpedme her sophomore, junior and senioryears. We worked together and we both

really enjoyed it, he said. There wasa lot of action. It was go, go, go the whole game,

Bob said, the two of us workingtogether.CBA was a pretty good team during

that time, building the likes of GregPaulus. Paulus was the quarterbackof the 2004 Christian Brothers Acade-

my football team, which won theNew York State Championship. But Paulus isnt the only CBA grad

to make it in sports.Kathryns friend, Erica LaGrow, is

the head womens lacrosse coach atYale University.

College callsKathryn was setting her sights on

college and picked out St. Johns Uni-versity in New York City to major inSports Management. She became a manager for the

mens basketball team her freshmanyear by showing up every day at thecoachs office until he had to say yes.She then applied with the New York

Jets to become a Game Day SpecialEvents intern and sure enough, she

got the job. They liked the job she did and rec-

ommended her to continue after col-lege, Bob said. She basically helpedthem with scouting. Shes been in theleague 14 years.

The Big ShowNow that Kathryn is a NFL coach,

Bob said she will travel with the team. The Bills are coming off an 8-8 sea-

son in which they swept the New YorkJets to ruin their run to the playoffs. They are looking for even betterthings next season. Her job now will be in sync with

the season. You stay at work as longas it takes, probably having to workboth Thanksgiving and Christmas,Bob said. Thats showbiz.Kathryns promotion has also been

the talk of the town in Syracuse.Everybody is so happy for her,

Bob said. The news has made a bigsplash in a lot of schools and we haveheard from a lot of young women andyoung girls who are so excited.

Still a hometown girlKathryn loves to visit Lake Hunting-

ton, where her grandmother, EttaPierce, aunt and uncle Norma andPeter Pierce, and friends and cousinsall live. Aunt Susan and Uncle BobCouture live nearby in Beach Lake, Pa.Kathryn really considers Lake

Huntington her home, Uncle Petersaid. She always came here when shewas small, and when she came homefrom college she would come here. She spent every summer and long

vacation in Lake Huntington, Bobsaid. She was also a lifeguard at theDelaware Youth Center for twoyears.Peter said Kathryn tries to keep the

family on the straight and narrow rooting for the team she works for.My dad [the late Melvin Pierce]

was a Jets fan, Peter said. Kathryn isvery, very loyal to her team and likedto fill the seats with Jets people.Loyalty really pays off, he said.It sure does.
