Besides SUNY Fredonia's amazing reputaon in the world of music educaon, the reason I came here was because of theteachers, the people, and the atmosphere. There is no other college like SUNY Fredonia that gives you the experience of a music educator and a professional performer at the same me. One of thebest experiences I've had here was performing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Masterworks Orchestra. The fourth movement has one of biggest bassoon solos in orchestral repertoire and tohave been able to perform it at the age of 19 was a life changing experience. For generaons, Fredonia has provided thetraining of many of New York’s most successfulmusic teachers. The Bachelor of Music in MusicEducaon is now one of Fredonia’s leadingdegree programs, and the graduate of thisdegree develops a high level of musicianship andis cerfied to teach music in the state’s publicschools.

We believe that a good teacher is a goodmusician, and good musicians like to makemusic. One facet of the program sets Fredoniaapart from other schools - Music Educaonmajors receive a 1-hour private studio lesson intheir primary performance medium with ourleading arst faculty for six or seven semesters, plus weekly master classes with other membersof the studio. Music Educaon majors also havethe same opportunies to parcipate inaudioned ensembles and compete forperformance honors.

Music Educaon majors are involved withhands-on teaching experiences in the publicschools beginning in the second semester oftheir freshman year. Typically, students have 200hours of direct field experience in as many as fivedifferent schools or districts, before studentteaching. Music Educaon majors also receiveintensive conducng training and benefit fromprofessional educaon courses taught by highlyspecialized faculty dedicated to teaching andstudent learning.

Composition majorsreceive private composition lessons, compositionseminars and master classes, and courses inelectronic music, orchestration, and counterpoint.Elective courses in acoustics, aesthetics, arranging, and improvisation are also available.

There is a strong emphasis on composer andperformer interaction. As often as possible, thecomposer will have been asked to write a piece fora particular occasion or friend. Practicallyspeaking, all works composed are performed, andeach student gains experience by writing for abroad range of instruments, chamber groups, andstylistic opportunities. Reading sessions with theSymphony Orchestra or the Wind Ensemble evenallow students to hear their short works for thelargest ensembles.

Strong emphasis is given toward collaborationsoutside of the School of Music as well. Composerswork with choreographers, filmmakers, directors, poets and other creative artists. In our twoElectronic Music Studios, students are exposed tothe latest digital technologies as well as earlytechnologies including a rare Moog modularsynthesizer.

The program allows the student to studycomposition in a standard program, or to electperformance or electronic music composition as anenhanced concentration.

Fredonia’s Bachelor of Science in Music Therapyis one of the most comprehensive in thecountry, based on the belief that an effecvemusic therapist is a proficient andknowledgeable musician who successfullyintegrates psychological and clinical skills intopraccal work. Our curriculum, approved bythe American Music Therapy Associaon, embraces the standards of music therapyeducaon and the professional competenciesof the AMTA.

The principals of music therapy have been usedfor millennia, and the praconers organized asa profession in 1950. The musical skills of the music therapistemphasize flexibility as a performer andinterpreter of music. The student will study aprincipal instrument, be encouraged to performin a broad range of ensembles, and to studyother music making strategies.

The demand for qualified music therapistsconnues to grow, and our graduatesconsistently score above average in theCerficaon Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)exam, have been hired in compeve musictherapy job searches, and have created newposions in the field.

The musical result of a recording project isincreasingly dependent upon the recordingengineer, and often the recording studio itselfcan be regarded as a musical instrument.
