Job Description

Job Title: DentistDepartment: Oral HealthReports To: Dental Director FLSA Status: ExemptApproved: June 2006Revised: November 2010

SUMMARY: This position assesses and evaluates the oral health care needs of patients; performs selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks; institutes and manages care for patients; and performs related work as assigned. This position is also responsible for ensuring the establishment and participation in clinic-wide integrated services such as Well-Child checks and Chronic Care Management, as well as Community Outreach Programs. This position provides direct clinical supervision of oral health staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Perform direct patient care by providing dental services including but not limited to preventive and restorative care.

2. Responsible for the recommendation and/or administration of medications in accordance with standards of care adopted by the Alaska State Board of Dental Examiners and policies of SCHC.

3. Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies4. Research and develop a knowledge of evidence based oral health procedures and

educational tools and methods to instruct and guide patients to optimal oral health including prevention and treatment techniques.

5. Ensure the establishment and participate in clinic-wide services such as Well-Child checks and Chronic Care Management as well as Community Outreach Programs.

6. Accurately record existing diagnosis, exam notes, on-going care and referrals according to an established format, including using appropriate procedural coding.

7. Participation in quality assurance program development and implementation.8. Dispensing of medications.9. Adherence to the Center’s dental policies and procedures.10. Participation in community outreach and education efforts as necessary.11. Supports and participates in SCHC efforts to be a trauma informed organization. 12. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONISBILITIES:Received: Works under the supervision of the Dental Director. Supervision is received through personal conferences, general observation of work in progress and periodic review by supervisor of completed work.

Performed: Supervision of dental staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Current (annual) TB screening, Hepatitis A and B immunization is required of all SCHC employees handling medical waste. Alaska driver’s license recommended.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:Graduate of an accredited nationally recognized dental program / school. Professional license to practice as a Dentist. Must obtain and possess or be eligible to apply for Alaska Dental license. Must be in good standing with national and / or state professional organizations, with current continuing education requirements and professional licensure. Two years minimum working in rural and /or underserved clinical environment preferred. Current DEA license required (or in application process). Current ACLS required. Additional emergency licensure recommended (PALS, ATLS, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1. Absolute understanding of need for patient confidentiality in all Sunshine Community Health Center matters.

2. Knowledge of dental clinic operations including medical recordkeeping and dental charting.3. Knowledge of the principles of supervision and training.4. Knowledge of OSHA Blood borne Pathogen Standard and adherence to safety rules and standards.5. Effective leadership skills; mentoring and development of dental team.6. Skill in operating x-ray equipment and film processing.7. Possess excellent organization skills including accurate and legible records and the ability to multi-task.8. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to exercise sound judgment.9. Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and with patients, visitors and employees of varied and diverse backgrounds as well as alternative lifestyles. 10. Ability to work independently and use good judgment in work prioritization.11. Ability to complete difficult/complex tasks.12. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods of time, speak, hear, write, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel and operate a keyboard. Employee must also have visual acuity to read small print and view a computer monitor, reach to the top of a five drawer filing

cabinet, lift boxes of no more than 30 lbs. May need to lift medical equipment and help in lifting patients occasionally.WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee generally works within the interior of a healthcare clinic/office environment. Employee may travel between multiple worksites and be responsible for own transportation. Out of area travel may be required on occasion. The general work environment is clean with a moderate temperature and noise level. Employee will be required to use a computer and other office equipment and participate in communication through typing, reading, writing and telephones, etc. The employee may be in contact with patients under all conditions and circumstances, e.g., illness, emotional duress and hostility. Daily work activities also involve contact with the general public, staff members and government representatives under all conditions and circumstances.

OSHA:The employee may be exposed to infectious waste, blood, body fluids, communicable/infectious diseases, air contaminants and hazardous chemicals. All SCHC facilities are non-smoking. SCHC will provide the employee instructions on how to prevent and control such exposures. The employee may be exposed to the Hepatitis B Virus. SCHC will make the Hepatitis B vaccination available to all employees free of charge
