WINTER BOWLS CARNIVAL 201654th
Sunshine Coast QueenslandYour holiday bowling destination
PRESIDENT’S INTRODUCTION
W E L C O M EOn behalf of the Sunshine Coast District Bowls Association, we welcome all bowlers and visitors to our 2016 Winter Bowls Carnival. We look forward to catching up with all those who are returning for this year’s carnival and to new entrants and visitors. We continue to be impressed by the calibre of bowlers playing in these events which are arranged to cater for bowlers at all levels so that the chances of doing well are enhanced as much as possible. Following record entries last year we are continually trying new events and to repeat those that have been popular in the recent past. We are very proud to introduce for the first time an event for juniors only, which is conducted during the school holidays and will be a major feature for our carnival. Feedback from past participants have helped us to bring to you a good mix of events and we are sure you will enjoy each and every event you enter.
The Sunshine Coast clubs hosting the various events are some of the best clubs in Queensland and their greens should be at their finest during the carnival season. A number of clubs within our District will also be hosting their own carnivals and details are included in this publication.
A new event introduced a couple of year’s ago, “The Hinterland Fours” continues to be an outstanding success and will be held again this year. The Hinterland has much to offer and we are sure that those who visit this region will enjoy the experience.
We encourage all bowlers to support the many events and enjoy the hospitality of the clubs they visit and we are sure you will be most welcome.
We are grateful to our many sponsors, particularly those mentioned in this booklet, including our major sponsors ‘The Sunshine Coast Council’ and ‘Sunshine Coast Destinations’. If you are doing any sightseeing we commend the council tourism body to you as a valuable source of information and assistance.
Wherever you choose to play bowls during the carnival season we wish you success and enjoyment.
Geoff Osborne President SCDMBA
Welcome to our beautiful Sunshine Coast and to the 2016 Winter Bowls Carnival.
Always one of the most popular events on the Coast’s calen-dar, the carnival is celebrating its 54th year which is a huge achievement for the sport of bowls, the region’s bowls clubs and communities and most of all you, the bowlers, who continue to support all of the events.
The Winter Carnival continues to develop and there are a number of new initiatives this year, including a new event for juniors – the next generation of bowlers.
With several thousand participants from all over Australia and New Zealand attending, this competition is a wonderful oppor-tunity to showcase what a magical place we live in.
When you’re not playing, I encourage you to take the time to see everything on offer from our beautiful hinterland to our pristine beaches.
Whatever your interest, the Sunshine Coast offers a diverse variety of attractions to visit, fine food and wines to taste, shop-ping and markets and an abundance of great places to stay.
For our New Zealand visitors, direct flights between the Sunshine Coast and Auckland continue to operate seasonally and coming seasons are being extended due to the service’s popularity.
We locals are truly proud of the place we call home and hope you will be enticed to come back again soon for a longer stay.
I’m sure the competition will be spirited, but friendly. and I wish everyone the best of luck. Happy bowling!
Mark Jamieson MAYOR
MAYORAL MESSAGE
W E L C O M E
From the spectacular coloured sand cliffs in the north, to the iconic Glass House Mountains in the south, the Sunshine Coast is a very special, natural place.
On the Sunshine Coast, the only thing more refreshing than the water is the lifestyle. With its endless beaches, lush rainforests and easy smiles, it’s a place where you feel like a local from the moment you arrive, a place where you can forget everything - and that feeling is unforgettable.
From the first game played in the region dating back to 1936, the Sunshine Coast is one of Queensland’s most popular bowling destinations.
Our popular haven for lawn bowlers offers facilities and venues across the Coast, and a
range of social and competitive carnivals to appeal to beginners and competitive bowlers alike.
Whether it’s a trip to the Sunshine Coast with fellow members from your local club, a group of friends, a loved one, or your family; it’s not only a hub for bowls lovers but it also offers plenty to see and do as a destination.
It is home to an endless number of exceptional attractions, activities and events.

NambourWith a comfortable blend of shopping, business, health, education, events and entertainment, Nambour offers a laidback lifestyle with a strong community focus. As a town, Nambour is the backbone of the Coast, the quiet achiever, going about its business without fanfare. Nambour has two bowling clubs, Nambour Heights and Nambour.
YandinaThis is the famous ‘Ginger Town’ of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, which boasts some of the most beautiful country in Queensland. Yandina lies just to the north of Nambour, and is extremely rich in natural rainforest parks and reserves.
WoombyeWoombye used to be called ‘Cobb’s Camp’ due to the fact that it was a staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches. Home to luscious sub-tropical fruits, and the popular macadamia nut, it is the site of a thriving farmers’ market.
MapletonSituated in the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the scenic drive to Mapleton from Maleny, taking in Montville and Flaxton, is one of the most stunning on the Sunshine Coast. Throughout this beautiful district, art and craft galleries abound, along with potteries, antique shops and museums.
PalmwoodsSet in a mosaic of avocado, custard apples and pawpaw orchards, orange groves, and banana plantations, Palmwoods is an arts and craft hub only a few kilometres south of Nambour. It’s within comfortable driving distance of Buderim and the charming Blackall Range villages of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton.
