NEWSLETTER Sunshine Coast SportFishing Club Inc If you missed it, you had better have a reason better than ‘The Don’s’ average because it was an awesome trip away. We had three houses all in the same street, which made for a very social but relaxed atmosphere. There was a good mix of relaxation and full on fishing action as well as a vari- ety of fish being weighed - from Carl’s teeny tiny whiting larvae, to some beautiful slab sided reds. Not only did Mark Armstrong weigh in the winning Red Emporer, but he was also responsible for the four batteries donated as random prizes. Thanks Mark! Thanks also (once again, and always) to Wayne and Barb at Maroochydore fishing world for supporting the club with a huge bonus of vouch- ers for random prizes. Hi all, A great time was had by all who attended the Inskip trip, a

total of about 25 members with 10 boats turned up throughout the 2 week comp.

The fishing was a bit slow at times and the winds didn't help either. Some very nice fish were caught

over the 2 weeks. After 23 years of building his boat, Ken finally got it in the water, after a few

teething problems all went well and he brought a nice feed of fish home. Wade also had a couple of problems again, but they were

sorted out quickly. Col blew his battery up in his 4wd on the way up to Rainbow Beach and his gear

box on the way home, but he did win a battery at the end of the comp. Many thanks to Wayne and

Barb for their sponsorship and to Mark who organized the 4 batter-ies to be prizes for the comp.

There will be a video night at the club meeting with the

highlights of the trip. Cheers Vince.

Captain Saunders

“Congratulation Ken on completing your boat. You have done a fantastic job and should be very proud of it.”

After starting his boat 23 years ago Ken has achieved a mile-stone and on Sunday 1st of May, he launched it and christened her “Catch 23”.

Starting it 23 years ago and it taking 23 years to build are two dif-ferent things. 23 years ago, it started off as a set of drawings, and 6000 x 1200 sheets of aluminium.

Nothing was router cut and nested with tabs, weld part A to part B in those days. It was a case of making templates from the draw-ings onto thin tin, cutting them out and then scribing the shape onto the sheet of aluminium and cutting it out with a circular saw and power plane.

Within a few months a boat hull had taken shape. It did kind of get its first water test in the back yard at Ferguson Ave around 1992 ish when it flooded from the rain that year. She floated and that was considered pretty good so it was given a new home on a trailer.

However due to that bloody nasty thing called work, on the trailer is where it sat for the next 22 years before Ken got back into it again. Having a hull welded to-gether is deceiving, It looks boat like, and you know it floats - A few week ends and the odd late night in the shed and she’ll be ready to go. HAA NO WAY! I have helped my parents fit out a 44’ sailing cat and seen them fully build a 40’ power cat but I can still scarcely believe the amount of work that Ken put in to finish Catch 23.

Congratulations Ken, she is a great boat, looks awesome and just ask Joan & Carl, and Vince and Joe, you wont be able to sneak out to a secret mark ‘cause on the wa-ter she stands out a mile away. WELL DONE!
