PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Women’s golf on the Sunshine Coast and the South Burnett is certainly alive and well! We go into the 2016 District Championships with nominations far exceeding expectations and it seems that every time I hear about an Open Day, it’s been over-subscribed or bursting at the seams with players.

Alive and well also are our elite Junior girls who brought home the 2016 Junior Jug – a marathon effort in truly dreadful weather.

Our elite Juniors are working hard on their handicaps and playing in events here and away, yet we have very few junior girls coming through the ranks (that we know of, at least). Most will not have handicaps, and might be in clinics or having lessons. This is the group we need to identify and nurture in 2016-2017 so that, when the time comes, they are ready to take the place of our talented girls as they reach the end of their junior years. To this end, District Council will have a special focus on Junior girls in the coming year, and support from Clubs to further this cause will be greatly appreciated.

It's been a rewarding year for me personally as President of the District and the support and guidance from Delegates has made it a great learning experience. The highlights of my first year have been many:

Winning Junior Jug Small Grants initiative and the 5 innovative programs developed in clubs as a result Development of a comprehensive Child Protection Policy Introducing a District Newsletter Incorporating the North Coast Zone Ladies’ Golf Association into the District structure Maleny Golf Club joining the District Council Gunabul Golf Club gaining affiliation with SCBDWG Preparations for hosting the Meg Nunn Salver Tournament at Kingaroy in September.

Curiously, despite the active involvement of so many women in golf, finding volunteers to help on committees is our biggest stumbling block at both Club and District level. Hopefully in 2016-2017, we will see an increase in the number of our clubs sending a Delegate to Council. At the moment, only about half of our clubs have someone at the table to help promote golf for womenand girls.

I recently met a wonderful 96 year old woman who still plays golf twice a week and maintains a very nice handicap. Her wise observation that “golf doesn’t recognize age” is one of the reasons that we, at the District level, continue to work through the Council to create opportunities for more women and girls to have some exposure to this wonderful game. In the pages that follow, the efforts of the various District committees demonstrate the wide range of functions that the Council fulfils to achieve this worthy goal.

JUNIOR GOLF

It is with great pleasure that I present this year’s report. We have had a very productive year regarding the juniors once again.

It all started with the Sarah Jane Kenyon event held at Caboolture on 15 November 2015. We lost to Brisbane but the matches were very well played and the results were just as tight as in previous years. Nikita O’Hara (Caboolture) teamed with Rebecca O’Neill (Gympie) and squared their match as did JasmineO’Hara (Caboolture) and Samantha Pearson (Maroochy River). Justice Bosio (Caboolture) and Naomi Moore (Noosa) lost 2/1 as did Cassie Porter (Peregian Springs) and Bridgette Griffin (Maroochy River). Andrea Szerszen from Brisbane accepted the trophy from Cassie at the presentation. As the Junior Jug girls are exempted from selection and with the junior numbers declining , it will be hard to get 8 players for this year’s event at Virginia Golf Club. The quality of our juniors is certainly improving with the great coaching and the dedication of the parents to take them all to different venues to compete.

Junior Jug 2016 - Gatton Jubilee Golf Club Well what can I say? What a team! This year we selected Cassie Porter (Peregian Springs-hcp 1.6), Danika Coyne (Maroochy River-hcp 3.3) and Samantha Pearson (Maroochy River-hcp 8.2). The course was a typical country course and was well presented. The weather was another story. It was cold, wet and windy with half the course being closed part of the time due to flooding. We played a composite course for 2 rounds and luckily we had a bye in the worst of the weather. However with all this thrown at us our team proved too strong for all the opposition and WE WON!! This is a first for our new District. Congratulations to Cassie, Danika and Samantha for the great golf they played. The girls represented the District with pride and were a pleasure to be with for the week. I really appreciate and thank Diana Banks,Dianne Porter and Tony Pearson for making the week so special.

Junior Championships – Nambour Golf Club, Sunday 7 August 2016 Congratulations to Rhianna -Maree Lewis from Gympie for her outstanding score of 67. This was an equal course record with the previous record being held by Leanne Bowditch for many years. Rhianna pipped Sarah Wilson by 1 shot and this was also a remarkable effort and a first for Sarah to shoot under par. Sarah won the nett with a 66. Zoe Maxwell (Virginia GC) with 86 won the gross in the 2nd Division, with thenett going to Jasmine O’Hara (73). Our Championships were once again held in conjunction with the Men’s SC&SBDGA for the Rodney Pampling Trophy. Rhianna also won the girl's event. Lochie Coleborn (Mt Coolum) won the boys with a great 69. Thank you to Cal Roberts and Nambour GC for hosting the event and to the Men’s Committee for their input and contribution towards prizes for the girls. A big thank you to Katherine Kirk for her ongoing sponsorship of this event.

This year the SC&SBDGA Men’s Committee have selected 2 girls for special clinics and they are Justice Bosio (Caboolture) & Jasmine O’Hara (Pelican Waters).

Congratulations also to Justice Bosio on her selection to attend the Hills Golf Academy Clinic. This scholarship is offered every year with Rebecca O’Neill attending in 2015. Her golf and confidence has improved partly due to this experience. Bridgette Griffin was offered the same opportunity but has declined due to other commitments. The girls learn a range of golf skills before playing in the Hills Junior Classic (36 hole event and Greg Norman Qualifier) on the final two days.

Thank you to Diana and her committee for everything you have assisted me with in the past 12 months. I really appreciate your input.

Dorothy Retschlag, Junior Coordinator

SENIOR WOMEN'S GOLF

Our three events for 2015/2016 were extremely well supported by the Senior Ladies of our District.

District Senior Women’s Championship 2015 – Kingaroy Golf Club Proving that it was a popular event, we had 115 players participate in the 2 day (36 hole) District Senior Women’s Championship played in Kingaroy.

Results:A Grade: 36 Hole Champion Lyn Wong Tin Can Bay 36 Hole Nett Jenny Smallcombe Mt Coolum B Grade: 36 Hole Champion Coral Palmer Caloundra

36 Hole Nett Leigh Bruschweiler Mt Coolum C Grade: 36 Hole Champion Tracey Liddelow Caloundra 36 Hole Nett Beryl Miller Nanango

The members of the Club were fantastic hosts and I sincerely thank them for their assistance.

Senior Women's Event 2016– Noosa Golf ClubOur event in March was held at Noosa where we had the unprecedented misfortune of having to ballot players out due to receiving about 170 entries. Restriction on the number of players gave us 118 starters. Thank you to all at Noosa, particularly Alice Daw and the Ladies who worked tirelessly to make sure everyone had a great day.

Senior Women's Event 2016– Nanango Golf ClubWe ventured to Nanango in June for a beautiful day in the country with 76 players. Joy Cavanough and her merry band of Nanango members couldn’t do enough for us, and were wonderful hosts. Small country clubs are a wonderful example of how people work together.

Special Thanks to the 2015/16 Senior Women’s Executive CommitteeJenny Smallcombe (Mt Coolum) - Sue Pottle (Kingaroy) - Delma Cagney (Caloundra) - Pat Plowman (Beerwah) - Joy Hatton (Gympie) and the District Council for supporting senior women's golf this year.

Financially this year we had a loss of $141.05 which was very minimal considering the purchases made. We purchased a Laptop, Printer and Internet dongle for use by the Co-ordinator. The March and June event raffles were run by the host clubs and not our Committee and an amount of $128.10 was prepaid for the Championships to be held in September this year at Tin Can Bay Golf Club. Our appreciation to Linda Urquhart (District Treasurer) who has handled the financial payments on our behalf.

The Year Ahead We look forward to another successful Championship this year and the year ahead. We welcome all players from within the District aged 55 years and over to join our events. Courses and dates have been booked for the 2017 year: Friday 24 March at Murgon; Monday 19 June at Cooroy; and our Championships at Mt Coolum Golf Club on 11th and 12th September.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being Co-ordinator over the last 3 years and re-establishing what was once the Veteran's Committee, and it is my sincere wish that someone steps up this year at the Senior Women’s AGM and takes over the reins and carries the Committee onwards.

Phyl Hallewell Co-ordinator, SCB&D Senior Women’s Golf

NORTH COAST ZONE LADIES GOLF

The NCZLGA golfers have had another successful year with increased participation which reflects the enthusiasm and enjoyment of various competition formats at all levels of ability. As the new President I am grateful to the Executive Committee who have been very supportive and offered advice when required. Special thanks to Lyn Black (Sec/Treasurer), Linda Urquhart (Pennant Coordinator) and Lavinia Hill (Championship Manager) who perform their duties most efficiently. Thank you also to the Nambour Golf Club for making their Clubhouse available for our meetings.

At the beginning of my tenure we were faced with the problem of insurance for our office bearers, in particular event coordinators. After several discussions with the District President we were able to put forward a motion that the NCZLGA should come under the umbrella of the SCBDWG. It was agreed that we would be a full SCBDWG committee which would continue to conduct the affairs of the NCZ as before.

I would like to thank the delegates for their participation and diligence in relaying information between the Committee and their clubs which has made decision making on important matters easier and quicker.

The Pennant season was once again well supported and congratulations to those teams who were successful. Unfortunately we had some disruption due to inclement weather but were still able to conclude the matches without too much delay. Thank you Linda Urquhart and those Clubs who were able to re-arrange matches. The Pennant season next year will undergo some minor changes after discussion with Club delegates and feedback from Clubs. These will be finalised in the near future.

The 2015 Foursome Champions were Jo Malone and Desley Neilson (Bribie Is.) with a scoreof 133, one shot ahead of Kimberley Crawley and Heidi Falconer (Maroochy River). SOUTH BURNETT ZONE

On behalf of the ladies of the South Burnett Zone, I would like to present my report on our golfing year to date.

This year has not seen an increase in our golfing ladies as would we like but the positive attitude and hard work by the clubs will hopefully see a future turnaround. “Girls into Golf” has been a mild success for Kingaroy with Jane Franklin again working hard to introduce golf to newcomers, along with her band of helpers and our local Professional. The disappointing part is the lack of junior girls which the Zone will need to address in the coming months.

This year has seen the South Burnett play host to the District Masters at Blackbutt and the Masters ‘2 Day’ Championships at Wondai and Kingaroy. Nanango had the honour of hosting the District Senior Women’s Championships in June with a wonderful rollup of 70 ladies enjoying the course.

Kingaroy is excited to have the honour of hosting for the District, the Meg Nunn State Match Play Tournament in September, and is busy getting the course and themselves ready, with the ground staff and volunteers working very hard to present the course in the best possible condition for the event. So farthe weather has played its part by giving us rain when it is needed and not too many frosts. All in all I think our visitors will enjoy the course but will find it different to what they are used to.

Congratulations go to our ZONE CHAMPIONS: A Grade Jane Franklin KingaroyB Grade Donna Askin Kingaroy C Grade Sally Robe Kingaroy

Foursomes Rebecca Payne & Kym Gormley BlackbuttMixed Foursomes Kym Gormley & Chris Bodey Blackbutt/WondaiSandgreens (2015) Marilyn Bird WondaiVeterans (2015) Sue Brandon Kingaroy

Pennants (to date) With 4 Open days still to be played, Gross is being led by Kingaroy 72pts from Blackbutt and Nanango on 68pts, in the Nett Kingaroy lead with 76pts from Nanango on 60pts. It’s still anyone’s game.

Midweek PennantsWith one round to go it’s a tight run to the finish between Kingaroy 2 on 20.5pts and the Zone Combined Team on 19.5pts with the final round seeing these two teams meeting up to find out who will represent our Zone. Good luck to both teams.

Our golfing year is a long way from drawing to a close but I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Zone Tournament Director, Rebecca Payne and Zone Office Secretary, Marilyn Bird for the tireless andcompetent work they do to organise Championships and assist our Clubs with anything they may need forOpen Days. Well done Ladies.

As I conclude my report I would like to thank everyone for their assistance to me throughout the year, and wish the District Committee and Clubs all the success and best for the rest of 2016 into 2017. May thenumber of women playing golf increase and everyone enjoy this wonderful game.

Venessa Hansen, Vice President South Burnett Zone

COMMUNICATIONS

In this financial year the District allocated $2000 to club initiatives that aimed to attract new golfers. A Grants Committee was set up comprising Cal Roberts (Nambour), Robyn Boreham (Headland) and myself. Each Club received $400. The following five applications were approved:

Noosa Golf ClubAdvertising to target working women to participatein 4 sessions on Saturday/ Sunday with the Club Professional.

Kingaroy Golf Club Program involves 8 free golf lessons including golf club usage free of charge for 2 hour sessions on Saturdays. Program also subsidised by the club with the Club Professional and Committee involved.

Bribie Island Golf Club Clinics on two levels - firstly, for beginners and secondly for graduated from Level one and past golfers. The Club Professional and Committee involved with resources for advertising, equipment and refreshments (see case study below).

Maroochy River Golf Club Come and Try Golf program to attract ladies in the local community. Program run on weekend and involving the Club Professional and Committee. Resources for advertising and the social aspect including refreshments.

Headland Golf Club 1000 flyers to launch Headland’s 2017 already successful SWING program

An Evaluation Sheet will be sent to the clubs to get feedback on how successful their programs were in attracting new players. This will enable Clubs to reflect on how they went, and what they would do differently next time.

Helen Emery Chair, Communication & Grants Committee

Case Study – Bribie Island Golf ClubWith $400 District funding and a lot of support from within Bribie Island Golf Club, Robyn Cantrill, the Ladies’ Captain, conducted a two-level Beginners’ Golf Clinic over 3 months, March to May, 2016. Theseclinics were designed as an introduction to the game of golf, making sure that attendees enjoyed the process, and made new friendships along the way. The Level One Clinic was a one hour tuition session over 5 consecutive weeks with the Club Pro, Brayden Campbell, on the range. The Level Two Clinic took participants on to the golf course to try out their new golf skills from Level One and to learn about course management and golf etiquette. The resources invested in the program were:

District funding for a local advertising campaign to attract participants Club Professional provided lesson packages at affordable rates Bribie Island GC assisted with morning teas and welcome packs Ladies’ Match Committee members volunteered their time to assist with lessons and

information sessions. Outcomes Twenty-three ladies successfully completed both levels of the clinics. A number have signed up for full membership and have registered to gain a handicap. Many have exchanged contact details and are nowsupporting each other out on the course and socially.

DISTRICT DELEGATE TO GOLF QUEENSLAND

The Golf Queensland AGM was held on 20 May 2016. Peter Castrisos, Judy Logan and Lorraine Matthews were re-elected to the Golf Queensland Board of Directors, with Peter since re-elected as Chair.

In a recent Golf Queensland (GQ) media release, Peter is quoted as aiming to “build industry sustainabilitythrough initiatives focusing on growing player participation and strengthening club operations” and “promoting new ways for people to become involved in golf while keeping traditional structures strong." We are in good hands!

Golf Queensland continues with its vision of More People Playing More Golf, and organises and administers a variety of programs to that end. These are detailed in the Strategic Plan 2015-2019 and the Annual Report (see Golf Queensland website) and provide interesting and informative reading.

The GQ website contains a host of relevant current information about golf in Queensland, including Women’s Golf, Junior Golf, iGolf, the upcoming Golf Month, workshop information, Club Support, assistance with rules and handicapping…. the list goes on. I would urge all of you to access the Golf Queensland website - it really is a valuable resource.

Golf Queensland is progressing a range of exciting initiatives including: OneGolf - a new governance model proposed by Golf Australia that has been under discussion

with States and Territories since 2014. It has a unitary management structure operating under a single strategic plan for all state golf associations. The aim is to achieve efficiencies through reduction in duplication of process such as governance, financial and administrative functions as well as greater opportunity to improve marketing and sponsorship through a national approach. This will continue to be a key issue for Golf Queensland and Golf Australia during 2017.

Queensland Golf Foundation has been recently established to build a stronger golf community, focusing on junior and female participation and Club and District Support.

Junior Golf Queensland is now in operation, with membership steady and participation on the rise. A Junior Advisory Committee has been established and the intention is to appoint 5 Contractors for 10 hours per week to visit schools and undertake promotional golf activities.

The Club Support and Development service is expanding. Tools such as the Club Health Check and Grant Writing Assistance Program are accessible via the online centre, the content of which isbeing updated to include video content and case studies. The Club Support Consultants are currently contracted from March – December 2016. Damian Brown is our District Consultant.

A District Development Forum will commence in November and aims to investigate common district problems and opportunities. It will be attended by District Secretaries and/or nominees.

A review of Inter-District Competitions (Women's Meg Nunn and Junior Jug events) is being progressed by District Presidents.

If you would like any further information please contact me as your Golf Queensland Delegate. If I cannot help, I should certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

Jane Franklin, District Golf Queensland Delegate
