    DIRECTOR S NOTES

In a December of 1946 New York Times review of the film, Its a Wonderful Life, Bosley Crowther wrote that the movies weakness was in its sentimentality and the illusion it creates of real life. Mr. Capras nice people are charming, wrote Crowther, his small town is a quite beguiling place and his pattern for solving problems is most optimistic and facile. But somehow they all resemble theatrical attitudes rather than average realities.

Well, then how appropriate that we should be staging the theatrical version of this movie that in 1990 was deemed culturally, historically, and aesthetically sig-nificant by the United Sates Library of Congress. (Take that, Mr. Crowther!)

Of course Im being flippant regarding that 1946 review, and I even understand why other similar criticisms of the Frank Capra classic exist. But who among us hasnt needed to be reminded of the effect we have on those around us and the world beyond? We sometimes examine where we are and find it not to be living up to the youthful dreams of where we thought wed be. We can mistakenly judge our lives and our very selves a failure for not achieving those dreams, forgetting the importance of what we have done and who weve helped along the way.

In the spirit of this story, I asked the cast to start each rehearsal with someone sharing a personal Wonderful Life moment, to tell the rest of us something about their lives that reminds them how valuable they are and how good life really is. There were many.

May you be reminded of how much you mean to so many people and the good effects you have had on the world around you.

    Merry Christmas!Mark Salentine

    B IOGRAPHIES

Jennifer Allen (Stage Manager)Jennifer Allen loves Christmas and is thrilled to work on this project with old friends and new faces. Jennifer admits

to having a pretty wonderful life and is currently planning a wedding to a pretty wonderful guy, Chris, whom she cant wait to wed next July. As President of the Board of Directors, Jennifer encourages everyone to see what a wonderful life they have and rally behind the George Baileys in their life and community.

J.W. Anderson (Mr. Gower)J.W. vividly recalls seeing ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE on the Channel 6 late, late show almost fifty years ago. He thinks

it was the first time he ever shed a tear (just a little one!) watching a film. When he heard they were doing the show here, he just hoped he could get a part in it. This is his third show at Sunset. Thanks, Mark!

Randall Anderson (George Bailey)A founding member of Wisconsin Hybrid Theatre, Randall is delighted to return to Sunset. Audiences may remember

him from RUMORS, AUNTIE MAME, and A FEW GOOD MEN. Randall is thrilled to work once more with all the talented artists at Sunset, and urges everyone to be mindful of the lives we unknowingly touch.

Ruth Arnell (Mary Hatch/Bailey)Ruth just couldnt pass up a chance to act with Randall Anderson and is particularly delighted to work with him in

such a fun Christmas classic! Previous roles include Meg Magrath in CRIMES OF THE HEART, Tracy Lord in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, Brooke Ashton in NOISES OFF, and The Girl in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. She dedicates this performance to her Uncle Steve. Merry Christmas,
