Learning Targets
• I can explain lab safety rules and procedures.
• I can describe lab safety equipment, personal protective equipment, emergency equipment and their location.
Common Sense
• Common sense and maturity are the most important tools in a lab setting.
• Most accidents can be prevented if you use common sense and make safety a habit.
Table Team Discussion
• In your table teams, generate a list of common sense safety rules for the lab.
• For each rule, briefly explain why this rule is important.
• Be prepared to share.
Preparing for a Lab
• Prior to beginning a lab:
– Do not touch any equipment or begin a lab until the teacher instructs you to do so.
– Review and follow all directions and safety precautions provided by the teacher.
– Read all lab procedures before beginning the lab.
– Review any Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
– Inform the teacher of allergies and special medical conditions.
Preparing for a Lab
• Prior to beginning a lab:
– Cover and protect all skin lesions.
– Remove lanyards.
– Wear closed toe shoes.
– Pull back loose hair.
– Put on all necessary personal protective equipment (i.e. goggles, aprons, gloves, etc.)
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• An SDS provides information on chemicals including chemical/physical properties, health considerations, storage information, disposal information, etc.
• Corrosive – contact destroys living tissue and well as some equipment.
• Flammable – catches fire easily and capable of burning rapidly.
Common Sense Safety Rules
