Seasonal Celebrations
Our Holiday Concert is on
December 13 at 1:00 and
6:30. This year the
following classes will
perform: Barker, Lowes,
Johnston, Fordyce,
Copeland, Junior French
and the Junior Choir. If
your child is not attend-
ing both performances,
please let your child’s
teacher know so that they
can plan accordingly.
Primary classes will
perform in the Spring
Concert (check out the
school webpage google
calendar for the spring
concert date as well as all
special events booked
throughout the school
year: https://
schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/

Bake Sale
As is Sunnylea tradition, we
will be having a bake sale at
the Winter Concert on
December 13. The bake
sale will take place between
5:30—6:15 and 7:30 and
8:15. Proceeds from the
bake sale go to Out of the
Cold. https://
allsaintskingsway.ca/out-
of-the-cold/ Thank you to
the Green Team and
Mr. Kyle for organizing this
fundraiser. If your child is
performing in the concert,
further information will be
provided.
Food Drive and Toy Drive:
Fill up the Ambulance!
We will be collecting non-
perishable food items to
support Weston Food Bank.
We are also collecting new
toys. Donations can be left
in the boxes located near
the office until December
13th. Our goal is to collect
300 food items. Thank you
for your support.
Gently Used Winter
Clothing
We are collecting gently
used winter clothing to
donate to Fairbank
Memorial. Fairbank serves
it’s local community, as
well as having several
special needs classes.
Please leave any clothing
at the front foyer by
December 10th.
Growth Mindset
At the end of the day, ask
your child questions that
foster growth mindset.
What did you learn
today that surprised
you?
Did you make any
good mistakes today?
How did you learn
from them?
What did you do today
that was so hard it
made your brain grow?
How did you help
someone else learn
something new today?
Did you choose your
thoughts wisely by
reminding yourself
hat you can change
and grow?
Grandfather
Teachings:
Love/Eagle
We continue to
explore teachings
of indigenous cultures
based on the seven
grandfather teachings.
This month we will be
focusing on the Eagle.
The Eagle
represents
unconditional love
and the need to
understand each
other. Teachers will be
exploring love in many
ways, such as love of
self, love of the world,
love of family and
friends.

Safety Matters
appropriately for the weather. Un-
less we receive a cold weather
warning, students will continue to
go outside for recess breaks. In the
winter, dress your child with layers
of clothing and warm boots with
deep treads to prevent slips and
falls. Make sure the head, neck,
ears and hands are covered to pre-
vent frostbite.
As well, students
should bring a pair
of indoor shoes that
can be left in a on
the ledge above
your child’s hook.
The flu virus spreads quickly and
easily among children at school and
at play. The flu is spread by cough-
ing and sneezing and from touching
contaminated surfaces like toys,
doorknobs and computer keyboards.
Children should be reminded to wash
their hands frequently during the day
and to cover their nose and mouth
with their elbow when coughing or
sneezing. To help control the spread
of the flu virus, children not feeling
well should remain at home.
The climber is closed during much of
the winter months due to ice accumu-
lation. Please do not use the appa-
ratus during this time. It can be very
slippery when covered with a dusting
of snow. A reminder that the climber
is intended for use, and designed for,
grades 1 to 5—not kindergarten chil-
dren. Kindergarten parents and care-
givers are asked not
to use the climber.
The winter
weather will
soon be here
and with it
comes a num-
ber of safety
reminders.
Parents dropping students off at
school are asked to be extra care-
ful when walking on sidewalks
and paved areas. Mr. Traichel
shovels and salts paths and door-
ways before school starts. How-
ever, it is not always possible to
have it all done before the bell
rings. Please be patient. If drop-
ping your child by car, please
drive slowly, knowing that it takes
longer to stop.
Ensure your children are dressed

Remembrance Day
Thank you to all those who attended our Remembrance Day Service. Thank you to Mrs. Camilleri, Mrs. Bark-
er, Mr. Kyle, Ms. Varden and Ms. Fordyce for organizing such a meaningful service. Thank you to our current
servicemen (Tony Hampshire and Nathan Nugent), and veterans Ed Stafford (WW2) and Erica Johnston for
being part of the service. A big thankyou to piper Will McGuigan and to pianist Shannon Paterson.
Parent Council
Guest speaker - mark your calendar for February 26th
The parent council has arranged for a highly acclaimed guest speaker to join us in February. Paul Davis will be in our school to discuss
social media and online safety for children. He will hold workshops in the afternoon with students and then return in the evening to talk to
parents about concrete and specific steps we can take to promote the safety and wellbeing of our children as they learn to navigate online.
Please mark you calendars for the parent seminar taking place on the evening of Tuesday, February 26th. You can check out Paul Davis at
http://socialnetworkingsafety.net/sample-page/ or see his TED talk on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaEn0BQS0vY
New purchases
Most of the investments we have made in new classroom technology and new outdoor toys are in place in the school. The document cam-
eras are improving sharing and collaboration in the classroom. If you have a child in kindergarten, you have probably heard rave reviews
about the new outdoor play equipment that is helping the children build skills when they are outside. Check out the building toys, brooms,
tools, and other fun gear the children are using for exploration and development when they are outdoors.
Parent social
A big thank you to all of those who joined us at the Sunnylea Parent Social on November 8th! It was a fantastic night of food, drinks, silent
auction and catching up with friends both old and new. The event was a huge success and raised just over $6000 for our school which will
be used to support enrichment activities and resources for all Sunnylea students. Many thanks to all the wonderful individuals and busi-
nesses who donated so generously towards our Silent Auction including: Loblaws, Anny and Chris Richter, Table 21, Frank Pitsikalis, Re-
sortSuite, Lauren Currie, Bloor Meat Market, Lydia O’Neill, Jeff MacDonald, Poppy’s Collection, Orange Theory Fitness and Kingsway Village
Custom Homes. An especially big thank you to the kindergarten students in Ms. Mohan’s, Mrs. Walker-Penyk’s and Ms. Wielgus’ classes
who created such beautiful one-of-a-kind artwork for the auction!
Our next parent council meeting will take place in the new year on Wednesday, January 16th at 6:30pm in Ms Camilleri’s room. Everyone is welcome to
attend.

Silver Birch Club:
From January through April, grade 4 and 5 children will have the opportunity to join our Silver Birch lunchtime
reading club. A variety of excellent Canadian books are selected by the Ontario Library Association — 10 fiction
and 10 non-fiction.
Kids all across Ontario take part in the program.
We read the books and anyone who reads five in either category can vote for their favourite title in April. The
winners are announced at the Festival of Trees celebration at Harbourfront in May. It is a little like the Academy
Awards of books chosen by kids.
More information will be given in January when the club starts, but in the mean-
time, consider a title from the list as a Christmas gift or help your child to put
some of the books on hold in a staggered time frame at your local library. The
books are popular, and as we only buy one copy of each title for the library, any
titles that you are able to share with us would be greatly appreciated.

Ms. Breau and Ms. Akinyode for
coaching.
Choir:
Our junior choir will have their last
practice on December 6, in prepara-
tion for the winter concert.
Mrs. Camilleri and Ms. Fordyce
will be starting primary choir in
the new year.
Hockey:
The Sunnylea Hockey season is
around the corner. Due to a high
number of grade 4/5 boys and girls
interested in playing, Sunnylea is
looking to have two teams compete
this year. One team will feature a
format with GTHL players. Our
second team will feature house
league and recreational players.
Potential players will need to
already have equipment and some
playing experience. There will be a
few practices scheduled in 2019,
with separate tournaments in
Early March.
Ball Hockey:
For the second consecutive year,
Sunnylea will participate in co-ed
Grade 4/5 Ball Hockey. Please note
that ball hockey is only available to
athletes who do not compete on the
ice hockey team. Practices and the
tournament will likely take place in
February.
Hour of Code:
The week of December 3rd is the
week that Hour of
Code is celebrated
internationally.
Sunnylea students
will be participating
in the world-wide
event. Visit: https://

The Sunnylea Girls
Basketball team
finished their Western
Conference Tourna-
ment with a 2-1 win/
loss record. The girls
beat GRG 26-13 and Briarcrest
13-11. In their final game, the girls
lost a tough game against Gosford
by the score of 10-6. The coaches
would like to congratulate the girls
for the effort and positive
attitude. Special thanks to Lori and
Annabelle for driving and to all the
parents for their support and
cheering. Thank you to our coaches,
Mr. Evans and Mrs. Johnston.
Volleyball:
Our boys won their first tournament
and will be partici-
pating in another
tournament on De-
cember 11 (tentative
