Sunflower Genetics 2011 Production Sale - Friday March 25th, 2011

Transcript of Sunflower Genetics 2011 Sale

WELCOME to the 15th Sunflower Production Sale!

Wow! How else can you describe the cattle markets? Record prices paid for all weights of cattle and the future looks great. Excitement is at an all time high in our industry. The importance of genetics in your cow herd is more valuable than ever. Our breeding program has not been around forever, but for 30 years we have worked to develop Angus & Simmental genetics that work together to create the perfect blend into the best, most predictable SimAngus genetics available. Long before the term SimAngus was coined, we have realized the benefits of crossing the two most powerful breeds into one genetic package. Today you can capitalize on our diligent efforts to move your cow herd into the future. Countless sources point to the importance of crossbred females in the cow herd, and there can’t be a better cross than Simmental and Angus. Market signals only get stronger that the need for crossbred feeder cattle that can grow efficiently and yield high quality carcasses, will become more and more valuable in the future. The bulls selling are bred to perform in all aspects of the beef industry. Our cowherd is expected to excel in a commercial envi-ronment of forages and minimal labor. We have always felt we should handle our cow herd the very similar to our customers. If they can excel for us, they will work for you. We have been collecting the feedlot and carcass data on our cull steers that didn’t make it into the bull pen. The last 153 head of steers, have gained 3.86/day for 162 days and graded over 70% choice. Their data proves you can have efficient cows whose calves excel in the feed yard and yield high quality carcasses. Ask many of our customers how their calves perform and you’ll find the same story. To meet your needs, we have culled the bulls hard. Our cull-ing method only allows the best bulls to make it to sale day. We start at birth identifying bulls that won’t make our pen. Again at weaning the bulls are screened for performance. The bulls in the sale average over a 104 weaning ratio with an average birth weight of less than 81pounds! Later we again sort the bulls on phenotype, fleshing ability, disposition, and type. Any bull not meeting our standards is culled. Throughout our feeding period the bulls are continually screened with another group identified as yearlings and culled. The end result is a great set of bulls that will work for you and we can be very confident you will be satisfied with your purchase. We look forward to seeing you Friday March 25th at the Ranch on a beautiful, warm day. You are welcome to view the bulls anytime before the sale and if you have any questions, please feel free to call. Sincerely, The Gleasons

Factors to consider about Sunflower Genetics

We have a one track mind!

We are committed to produce one thing, the genetics for commercial producers who are focused on efficient production of a great product that our ultimate customer, the consumer, will enjoy:BEEF! Our dedication to you, our customer, is the driving force behind all of our decisions. Knowing the genetics we select in turn impacts your cow herd, we make all of our decision based upon how our actions will be a positive direction for your cow herd. For our decision to be relevant to your operation, we must design our management of the cow herd around the same circumstances your herd lives in. With that in mind many factors are important.

Cow herd record keeping First and foremost, our record keeping must be top notch to track individual and herd records. Each decision impacts not only the factor involved but usually affects other situations involving the management of the cow herd. The only way to follow such relation-ships is to have a record system that follows these interaction of management and productivity. We keep records not only as to weight measurement of the calves, but conception, calving, weaning %, productivity of pastures, and many other factors related to the management of the cow herd. Our cull steers are on feed to collect carcass data and will be used to aid us in our selection proc-ess. We feel tracking and measuring many factors gives us a better understanding of how our genetics work for us and in turn the predictability of our genetics in your cow herd.

Efficiency of Operation We strive to make our cows work for us not us working for them. This is the opposite of some purebred operations. Believing in the fact the most efficient forage harvester found is the cow, we force the cow herd to graze as much as possible. We utilize intensive rotational grazing where possible and the use of cool season grasses in conjunction with planted forages to enable the cow herd to utilize their ability to digest roughages. We don’t feel our cows should be pampered or have any special treatment. Survival of the fittest theory is the best way to find the genetics that really work the most efficient. Rather it be feed, labor, or other purchased in-puts efficient use is the key to making our operation profitable and in turn provide you with the genetics that work in real world situations. “we keep a close eye on our bottom line to help you improve yours”.

Teamwork For our operation to run smooth, it all takes teamwork. As the old saying goes, “there is no I in team” our business is no different. In our case, everyone pitches in to get the work done and every decision has to be how the work will get done. From discussion with our supplies to working with you, team work is the most important factor. Working with you about what genetics are needed in your herd is the best way we can plan ahead to supply your future needs. We enjoy discussing genetics and how they impact each calf crop. We study bloodlines for countless hours researching and looking for those that truly work into the production of beef. Work-ing with you, finding the next bull, in management of your cow herd, to marketing your calves, it is our favorite thing about the busi-ness. “Working together to help each other”, is the best way it can be said. Working with you about your selection in turn helps us decide which direction to go with our next generation.

Genetics Our business is to produce genetics that are profitable for you. All factors considered, the bottom line is that for us to be profitable, our genetics must be of value to you. With that in mind, every decision we make revolves around that simple fact. This is why we provide the pieces for a systematic planned crossbreeding program. Data proves that the crossbred cow is 23% more efficient and produces 3 more calves in her lifetime! That is real dollars. We design our program to enable you the select the genetics you need to achieve your crossbreeding goals. Blending the two most powerful breeds in the world into the perfect blend. We prefer to stack generations of similar genetics to provide you with predictable results. With that thought, we place considerable pressure on our cow herd to perform under commercial cow herd management. Those that excel are selected and the process is repeated over and over again. Utilizing AI and embryo transfer allows us to put as much pressure on our genetics as possible. Constant culling and selec-tion is done to find the genetics that will provide you with years of value.

Future Always looking down the road and towards the future is constantly on our mind. Trying to stay ahead of your needs and selection for genetics that add value in the future is the basis of all of our decisions. As more technology becomes economically feasible it will be utilized to discover the best genetics and how they fit into your operation.

We are totally dedicated to help you make a profit in the beef industry

Simmental, Angus or SimAngus? We are often asked, Which breed will work best for me?” That question is why we produce Angus, Simmental, and Si-

mAngus genetics. There is no one answer for every herd. We have worked hard for almost 30 years to produce the ge-

netics that work in a crossbreeding program. Study any feeder cattle buyer survey and one of the most important factors

is the demand for crossbred feeder calves. Buyers know crossbreds perform better and make more money. They are

willing to pay for the extra performance. The real benefit is the crossbred cow. For you, this is where crossbreeding will

make the most money.

Now, how do you utilize the different breeds we produce? That depends on your situation and desired end product. If

you are breeding heifers and want to make great replacements, more than likely our Angus genetics are the way to go. If

you have predominately Angus type cows, the purebred Simmentals will work to add growth and yet still leave a great

set of replacement heifers. The resulting heifers from this mating are best mated to our SimAngus bulls to maintain het-

erosis and not get too much of either breed. The SimAngus bulls also work very well on mixed cow herds with many

different breeds and body types. They tend to make the calves more uniform than either of the purebred breeds.

What ever genetics you need, we can help fill those needs. We have worked hard to select the best genetics of the two

most powerful breeds that work together to improve your bottom line. As you study the bulls, the best way to answer

your questions, is to give us a call and we would be very happy to assist you in making your decision.

Changes at Sunflower Genetics

We are excited to announce we have purchased

Jim and Donna Bassett’s interest in Sunflower

Genetics. We now own Sunflower Genetics in

its entirety.

It has been a great relationship for the past eight

years. Jim has had a very positive impact on

how we run the business and his influence will

help us as we move the business forward in the

future.

We have leased Jim’s land and will continue

striving to provide you with the best Simmental

and Angus genetics available. We are looking

forward to working with each customer as they

work toward their goals.

On October 17, Maurice Gleason-Dad and Grandpa-lost his battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed.

He was instrumental in the early development of Sunflower Cattle Company well before we became

Sunflower Genetics. His wisdom, friendly attitude and courageous spirit will live on in our hearts.

Thanks Dad for everything that you taught us! You will be greatly missed by all.

In Memory of Maurice Gleason

EXPLANATION OF DATA

Homozygous –sire all black or polled calves Hetrozygous-will sire some red calves BW-Adjusted birth weight. Adj. WW-Actual weaning weight adjusted to 205 days with age of dam taken into account. Adj. YW-Actual weight adjusted to 365 days of age. In the case of the ones printed in catalog they are calculated and are not official. They may vary somewhat. SC-Scrotal Circumference is the actual measurement taken at semen check. Minimum requirement is 30cm. FS-Frame Score is hip height taken at the same time as the yearling weight. This height is adjusted to age.

EPD’s are a good indicator of the differences in a group of bulls or heifers. They are tools that can be used to help you in your decision making process. They are predictors of performance of a bull’s calves and are subject to change however. At this time though they are an excellent way to compare bulls and their abilities. Decide how a bull will be used and find one that fits into the parameters you have set. An example would be if you are looking for an Angus bull to use on heifers but you want to save heifers from. In this scenario you would want a low birth weight EPD and a Milk EPD that fits your environment. Using the index values of $W in the Angus or API in Simmental is the simple method to use when select-ing a bull to retain heifers. Utilizing the breed average on API Sunflower Genetics bulls are $6 higher than the average Simmental bull. A bull used on 30 cows over 4 years would be worth $720 more than the average Simmental bull! Other traits would be what also fits your environment. Another example would be if you are looking for a bull to use on the resulting heifers as mature cows and pounds of calf was your main goal you would look at weaning and yearling weight EPD for maximum gain. In this case if you are retaining ownership of the calves, use $B or TI indexes to assist you in your selection. These examples are for comparison only. Your situation is unique in many ways. Use the data to help find the ones that fit into your program. If you desire we can help you in your decision making on which bulls will fit best for you. Give us a call and we will help you decide how to place you emphasis. Something to keep in mind, EPD’s reflect measured traits of growth and carcass, but do not necessar-ily reflect such things as mothering ability, udder quality, soundness, disposition and many other traits necessary for the commercial cowherd. These are things we watch very hard in our bull selection and in turn helps you. We have always felt some of these traits are of more importance than those reflected EPD’s. If a cow won’t have a calf, raise him to weaning and his vigor carry him through to slaughter the EPD’s mean nothing. Another thought, more is not always best. Keep in mind your resources and labor. If you have any questions, give us a call.

Performance Data Key

EPD explanation CE-The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to 1st calf heifers. A larger number indicates an easier calving bull.

BW-Calf weight at birth adjusted to age of dam. EPD is in pounds and predicts difference in the average birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to all other bulls

evaluated by the breed association. A lower number predicts a lower birth weight average and is an indicator of easier calving bulls.

WW-Weaning weight in pounds adjusted to age and dams age. EPD predicts differences in the average weaning weight of calves compared to other bulls. A larger

number indicates more growth.

YW-Yearling weight adjusted to 365 days of age. In pounds compared to all bulls evaluated by the breed association. A larger number predicts more growth between

weaning and yearling age.

MCE-Maternal Calving Ease. The ease with which a bull’s daughters will calve as 1st calf heifers. This reflects not only pelvic area but also desire to calve. A

higher number indicates more unassisted births on a bull’s heifers.

MILK-The maternal ability of a bull’s daughters. This is the weight a bull’s daughters calves compared to other bulls due to milk. A larger number indicates more

milk in a bull’s daughters.

YG-Yield Grade. A lower measurement indicates a leaner carcass.

IMF-an expression , as a fraction, of the differences in a subjective USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny at a given endpoint.

REA-in inches, is a predictor of the difference in the rib eye area of a sire’s progeny.

API-All purpose index for Simmental. Evaluates all traits for use on the entire cow herd. Use this Index if saving heifers.

TI-Terminal index for Simmental. Evaluates sire for feedlot performance where all calves end up on the rail.

$W-Value of calves at weaning. Used for Angus.

$B-Combines value of feedlot performance and grid value into one value. Used for Angus.

If you sell your calves by the pound, you have to look at this 3/4 blood bull. Simple math proves an extra 25 pounds per calf over four years of use on 25 cows is an easy extra $3,000 in your pocket! That doesn't even account for the extra profit his daughters can add.

I know it sounds like a broken record but putting calving ease and growth in a complete package is our goal. X193 is a great example of what we strive to pro-duce. This bull is young but don’t be afraid to use him on a smaller group of cows and he’ll be ready go full force next spring.

Every year there is a stand out bull. Most years it is one of our SimAngus bulls, but the one everyone asked about this year was this outstanding Angus bull sired by Leachman Paradigm. Once you see him, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Phenotypically he is hard to fault. Thick from end to end, soft easy flesh-ing, deep ribbed, and sound as you can make one. His individual performance is just as outstanding. Light birth weight, 123 weaning ratio, 115 IMF, 115 rib eye and yet leaner than average with a 67 ratio on rib fat! Can you imagine what that kind of performance could add to a group of calves? No surprise when you know his cow family. His performance is no accident as he is out of our Queen family. His dam is a awesome cow and her dam left her legacy that won’t be forgotten for a long time. If you would rather look at epds, take note of his calving ease and birth weight epd along with his $weaning. All combined, SFG Paradigm 053X is an outstanding bull with a different pedigree than most Angus that will be an outstanding investment at any price.

Last spring our calf crop was an exceptionally high percentage of heifer calves. Today you get to reap the

benefit of this fact. We are selling a great set of heifers that can add value to our herd or yours. Many are

out of some of our top cow families. We have always felt the cow made the difference as a great bull has a

great cow behind him. Over the years we have built our herd with this philosophy. In past years the females

we have sold have excelled in their new environment for their new owners. Many have made great show

heifers, a good number have went on to become donors, but they have all made outstanding cows. We breed

the cows to make bulls for our customers but have always felt an attractive look was a benefit also. That idea

is probably why heifers we have raised have won many ribbons for everyone at the halter. Matter fact heifers

from our herd have been Champion or Reserve at the Kansas State Fair and/or the Kansas Junior Livestock

Show for the past 7 years.

*As a special offer if you would prefer to buy bred heifers, we are offering to keep the heifer through the breeding season and you can pick up your bred heifers next fall. We will run the heifers with our replacements through the season under the same management. $300/heifer will cover the feed, pasture, breeding charges* and all labor through October. *breeding charges would include heat synchronization, AI with 1 straw of semen the same as we are using and the use of a cleanup bull.
