1621 - Sundsvall established by Gustav II Adolf 1721 - The city was invaded and burned by Russian soldiers 1803 - The city is once again in flames. Smallpox and cholera breaks out. 1849 - The first steam sawmill built and becomes the start of the world’s largest sawmill industry1888 - Sundsvall burns and the entire city is destroyed. 9000 people become homeless. 1927 - East coast route inaugurated. Now the capital is only 3 hours away. 2001 - Sweden’s first international casino.

Drakborgen - Children Play CenterDrakborgen is a childrens play center in

Birsta. At Drakborgen, kids can play in one of Sweden’s largest play centers consisting of 3 floors, the slide, tunnels, suspension bridges, hopping castle and a mini-land for children between 0-4 years. Norra Berget - Sundsvalls City ParkNorra Berget (North Mountain) is Sundsvalls city park with an animal preservation, lookout tower, walking trails, playground, playhouse, cafes and restaurants. Do not miss Handelsgård Vinfabriken with locally produced crafts and small-scale produced delicacies. There is also an open-air museum with approximately 40 buildings from all over Medelpad, also included is one of Norrland’s oldest timber houses, Kyrkladan, which is dated back to 1310. See handicrafts, Maritime Museum with the famous Skvader (Swedish fictional animal, part hare and part grouse).

We show a variety of crafts such as the shoemaker and watchmaker; along with about 30 captain paintings. The museum also includes an exhibition on the Samis, who had their summer stays at North Stadsberget. Kulturmagasinet (Culture Warehouse)Glassed harbor warehouse with a museum, library, cafe, archives, program activities, open pre-school and consumer information. Bridges connect the buildings which gives it a special character. Sundsvalls MuseumSundsvalls museum is located in Kulturmagasinet which is located in the harbor area, at E4. The museum offers many interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions, and a program of activities to attract both the young and old. NatureKlampenborgs Nature ReserveNature reserve with ample presence of broadleaved trees, which were planted during the sawmill epoch and in the former herrgårdsparken (park). Here is also härnögraniten (granite), an unusual rock that exist only in three locations in the county. Location: Essvik, Kvissleby

Nature ReservesIn Sundsvall, there are several fine nature reserves, among other things: Stornäset - rich bird life along the seaside beach meadows.Brämön - Medelpads ultimate outpost in the sea.Grenforsen - beautiful ravin in lower Klampenborg - rich deciduous forest at the old sawmill.

Nature TrailsA 1.8 km long path with eight information stations where it describes the trees, plants and animals, forestry and nature conservation. The path is not used much, so

Fiskeläget LöruddenFishing village dating from the 1600s. Well preserved environment with chapel, fish, fish store, crafts and a stone labyrinth.

Kvissle-Nolby Ancient RuinsUnique ancient remains with Norrland’s largest kurgan (burial mound), a rune stone, early medieval church ruins and a grave with several kurgans. The ancient remains areat is one of the most visible markings of power and status north of Dalälven. The area is beautiful and well-kept with benches and tables, and a sign-posted archeology path which guides visitors through the 1000-2000 years old cemeteries and farms.+46 60-19 18 03

Njurunda ChurchBuilt in 1856-62 and in neoclassic style. Especially worth seeing is the astronomical clock, church stables which are 200 years old, and a church museum in the tower room with objects from the 1400s. Near the church is a grave from the Iron Age.+46 60-66 32 30

OtherLars Ahlin - a literary walkWalk in the footsteps of the author Lars Ahlin, born and raised in Sundsvall. It consists of 14 different locations in the city center, where there are enamel plates with text from Lars Ahlin books. Information and map is available from the Kulturmagasinet or Tourist Office.
