10--LEVELLAND & HOCKLEY COUNTY NEWS-PRESS, Wednesday, May 29, 2013 AWARDS Numerous Sundown High School seniors were honored with scholarships at the High School Awards Assembly held on Friday. Janice Legan, counselor at SHS, was joined by Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president of South Plains College, Mike Box, chairman of the SPC Board of Regents, Abel Perez, president of Levelland Noon Rotary Club, Kevin Elmore, Levelland Kiwanis Club, and Blake Moore, Lyntegar in Tahoka, in presenting scholarships to many students. Dr. Sharp and Box said it was their pleasure to be representing South Plains College in announcing the scholarship recipients for the Class of 2013. “You are all to be congratulated for your hard work, your dedication and your leadership that is being recognized this morning,” said Dr. Sharp. Dr. Sharp added that SPC was pleased to be offering scholarships to 38 SHS graduating seniors, totaling $39,000. “This year, we were able to provide a scholarship for every Sundown High student who applied for a scholarship,” said Dr. Sharp. The SPC Opportunity Scholarship award ($250) recipients were: Rebecca Bailey, Alexander Cancino, Carl Demel, Tyler Elliott, Chance Hinson, Bryan Jacquz, Adrian Marinelarena, Aaron Martinez, Victoria Martinez, Bryce McHam, Zachary Murillo, Emmanuel Realyvasquez, Marissa Rodriguez, Caleb Vaught, Kaleb Vega, Maggy Villarreal, Wesley Wright, and Nydia Young. Other SPC scholarship awards: The Roland Martin Memorial Scholarship for $500, went to Raylee Wilkes. The South Plains College Family Scholarship for $500 was presented to Harley Reyes. Recipients of the Vergie Belle Smallwood Achievement Award for $500 were Lauren Marek, Miranda Perez, Raylee Wilkes, and Jessica Polson. The John L. Smallwood Leadership Award ($500) was presented to Robby Escobar, Devin Kaleb Elmore, Johnny Hernandez, and Michael Serna. Receiving the John L. and Vergie Belle Smallwood Scholars program presents students designated as Smallwood Scholars with $2,000 scholarships, explained Dr. Sharp. Shelby Beardsley was chosen by the faculty of the SPC art department to receive the Christine DeVitt Memorial Scholarship in Art in the amount of $500. Collins Evan was also selected to receive the Royce Elam Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Other students receiving Smallwood Scholarships were: Caleb Fryar, Brenda Guardiola, Kyler Marshall, Morgan Sick, BreAnne Strickland, and Desiree Trinidad. Dr. Sharp and Box also presented the Valedictorian ($5,000) and Salutatorian ($3,500) Scholarships, for SPC tuition and fees, to Spencer Rawls and Dawson McClendon. Receiving the Rube Morris Memorial Welding Scholarship for the amount of $500 was Robby Escobar. Michael Serna was additionally selected to receive the SPC Family Scholarship for $500. Devin Elmore, Jessica Polson, and Desiree Trinidad, the Ted and Delores Davis Family, $500 (each). KaLee Dehnel and Brenda Guardiola, the Mary Lynn Sherley Scholarship, $500(each). Victoria Garza was awarded $500 by the Texas Association of School Boards for her winning essay and panel presentation held in Corpus Christi. Victoria Martinez was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Generation Texas. SPC matches this scholarship, so it totals $2,000. Collin Evans, Spencer Rawls, and Wesley Wright earned $2,650 scholarships in bowl competitions held by the Texas Association of Community and Schools Academic Challenge.
