tartan! Music,
Haggis,Kilts &
more!Thanks a zillion!
It seems there is always something to be hugely thankful for! This time I want to thank EVERYONE who helped to make the Tea with Diana Gabaldon and Shenanigans great successes. We did very well financially at both events because of GREAT silent auction items (a special thanks to Kris Satterwhite who made oh so lovely baskets and goodies and the Barb Ripple for her beautiful jewelry). The new addition at the tea (a no host bar) was a great success and Michael Satterwhite was the whisky guy of the day. John McGregor did a super job organizing Shenanigans and the Knockabouts, McTeggart dancers, Kari's fiddle kids and Megan McPherson really entertained the crowd. Good times were had by all and that is to the credit of those who put so much into each event! THANKS!

Bottles and cutlery needed! Don’t throw away those empty plastic water and soda bottles!
Save them for NACHS! We are gathering clean, empty, small water and soda type bottles
for a plant project for SOAR INTO SPRING. Help NACHS teach kids about growing
things by donating bottles we can use. We also need old metal spoons and forks to make
wind chimes for SOAR INTO SPRING. This is recycling at it’s best. We will use loads of
neat old stuff to make cool wind chimes! If you have items to donate call Jude at 928-556-
3161.
Bicycle Signs
Time is drawing near for the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival! Last year we tried a fun project by having a neat small sign made to hang from the back of a bicycle seat advertising the festival. Our own Todd Barnell rode that sign all over town and had many great conversations with folks who were interested. If you ride a bike and would be willing to put on a sign please call Jude and she will get one done up for you! 928.556.3161.
Volunteers Needed for Soar Into Spring!
The City of Flagstaff is once again readying themselves for Soar Into Spring....a wind/spring
festival at Foxglenn Park. In order to give back to the community and to positively impact
kids, NACHS will again host a crafty booth. We will offer the kids the opportunity to make a
wind chime and to plant something (herbs, etc.) and take it home with them. So, we need
HELP! The event will take place from 11 to 4 on April 25th and we need folks willing to
spend all or part of that time helping the kids. If you are interested please call Jude at

The Grand Canyon Celtic Arts Academy is really excited for its inaugural year
bringing some fantastic musicians from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to teach a two day
workshop in July and perform at the Northern Arizona Celtic Highland Festival. The
workshops will take place July 15 and 16 and will offer instruction in Irish fiddle,
flute, penny whistle, DADGAD guitar, Irish tenor banjo, and bodhran.
Instructing the fiddles will be Devin McCabe. Devin has been playing music since
the age of five and has been involved in traditional Irish music for approximately 10
years. He began fiddle instruction under Milwaukee native Ed Paloucek and Chicago
fiddler Liz Carroll and has taught himself the concertina and whistle in recent years.
Teaching Irish flute and penny whistle is Brett Lipshutz. Based in Milwaukee, Brett
has been playing various flutes for over 25 years. He has played Irish and
Baroque music for 15 years. Brett has twice played at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil
and toured with the Trinity Irish Dance Company. In addition to involvement in
theater projects, school outreach programs and many recordings and radio
broadcasts, he is an active teacher. Brett most recently returned from Paris,
France, where he taught flute and whistle at the Association irlandaise.
Teaching Irish DADGAD guitar, Irish tenor banjo, and bodhran is Randy Gosa.
Randy has studied music with several musicians such as Liz Carroll, Silé Shigley,
Andy Irvine, Tony Nother, and has studied at the University of Limerick, Ireland
with Niall Keegan and Sandra Joyce. In addition to being a string musician since
the age of 12, Randy is a graduate of Visual Art and Celtic Studies from the UW-
Milwaukee. He is also an active céilí and set dance musician in Milwaukee and
teaches at the Irish Fest School of Music.
The Grand Canyon Celtic Arts Academy is directed by Kari Barton (Living
Traditions Presentations) and is part of the Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage
Society. For more information, please contact Kari Barton at

From Normandy in France, the name probably comes from "Brix" near Cherbourg. Like
many of the early Scots nobility, the first Robert de Brus came over with William the
Conqueror in 1066. A later Robert de Brus accompanied King David I when he returned
to Scotland in 1124 from his sojourn in England. The family became established in
Annandale in what is now Dumfries and Galloway. The family also owned extensive
lands in England. As a result of marriage to the daughter of King David, Robert de Brus
became Earl of Huntingdon.
At one point, when King David invaded England, Robert de Brus gave up his holdings
in Annandale to his son and joined the English forces. He later captured his son at the
Battle of the Standard in 1138. Generations after that, Robert the Bruce, Earl of
Annandale, became ruler of an independent Scotland and achieved the great victory at
Bannockburn over Edward II in 1314.
The royal line died out 50 years later when the first Stewart monarch ascended the
throne as a result of his descent from Bruce's daughter, Marjory. But the Bruces were
granted land in Fife and continued as a noble family. In 1633 Thomas Bruce was created
the first Earl of Elgin. It was the 7th Earl of Elgin who rescued the marbles of the
Parthenon in Greece, now in the British Museum and known as the Elgin Marbles. His
son was an eminent diplomat and became Governor General of Canada.
