Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not

do any work. God's action is the model for human action. If God "rested and was refreshed" on the seventh day, man too

ought to "rest" and should let others, especially the poor, "be refreshed." The Sabbath brings everyday work to a halt

and provides a respite. It is a day of protest against the servitude of work and the worship of money. Christians keep

Sunday as a holy day in the place of the Sabbath, because Jesus rose from the dead "on the first day of the week

(Sunday)." Because it is the "first day," the day of Christ's Resurrection recalls the first creation.

Because it is the "eighth day" following the Sabbath, it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by Christ's Resurrection.

For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord's Day Sunday. It is Easter which returns

week by week, celebrating Christ's victory over sin and death, the fulfillment in him of the first creation and the dawn

of "the new creation" (cf. 2 Cor 5:17). It is the day which recalls in grateful adoration the world's first day and looks

forward in active hope to "the last day", when Christ will come in glory (cf. Acts 1:11; 1 Th 4:13-17) and all things will

be made new. Sunday is expressly distinguished from the Sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for

Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the Sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfils the spiritual truth

of the Jewish Sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. "Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is

celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal

Church."

The Sunday obligation: The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other

holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass. The precept of participating in the Mass is

satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the

evening of the preceding day, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed

by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.

A day of grace and rest from work: Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done, human

life has a rhythm of work and rest from activities that hinder the worship owed to God. The institution of the Lord's Day

helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives. Sunday is

traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. In

respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians should seek recognition of Sundays and the Church's

holy days as legal holidays. They have to give everyone a public example of prayer, respect, and joy and defend their

traditions as a precious contribution to the spiritual life of society. If a country's legislation or other reasons require

work on Sunday, the day should nevertheless be lived as the day of our deliverance which lets us share in this "festal

gathering," this "assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven."

The charity of truth seeks holy leisure- the necessity of charity accepts just work.

Take a Moment to Reflection

• Do you believe God will save everyone no matter how they live their lives?

• What did Jesus mean about entering through the narrow gate?

• Do you believe you are on the right path now in your life?

Page 5: Sunday, September 01, 2013 Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28 …...22 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, September 01, 2013 Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a; Luke 14:1, 7-14

Caring is our starting point. “How can we

help?” That energizing question moves 1.7

million Knights of Columbus throughout

the world into action. It is the starting

point for action programs that make a

difference in the lives of the people in their

parishes and communities every day.

Knights develop and carry out these

programs specific to the abilities to their

local council and the needs of their Church,

community, council, and the youth with

the commitment to achieving real results.

Serving others is not only part of what we

do, it’s who we are. Together the Knights

of Columbus have a powerful voice. Our

foundation is our faith and we are an

organization like no other. Alongside the

countries that have the Knights of

Columbus presence such as the United

States, Canada, all of South and Central

America, Philippines, Guam, Siapan,

Poland, Bahamas, Porto Rico, Virgin

Islands, service bases around the world,

recently added Lithuania and Ukraine to

our growing global presence.

The Knights of Columbus are men of faith.

Guided not only by our belief in God and

the Catholic Church, but belief in each

other and in ourselves. We are the Knights

of Columbus, an organization strengthened

by the successes of the past, and driven by

the goals of the future. Dedicated to the six

key areas of service - faith, community,

family, youth, culture of life and fellowship.

We are dedicated to making a difference
