~ New young families on a free 1st membership year have made generous, appreciative dona-tions, starting to build a meaningful future here with their young families. What a supportive statement that makes for their future with us! THANK YOU!

~ We even have a few donors from outside the congregation who use this opportunity to show their connection and appreciation. THANK YOU!

But Wait… there are more opportunities! We are on the brink of two important initiatives:1. Sustaining Members are people who choose to pay additional dues to further support TSTI… (Yes, you read that right!) We have about 40 Sustaining Member households. Years ago when we had an increase in families who need-ed to pay lower dues, people stepped up and paid a higher rate to help balance this. Please email me if you are interested in participating.

2. We are also about to embark on a signifi cant Campaign to raise our next Endowment in honor of Rabbi Cohen’s 25th year with us… We are in need of people to help us structure this cam-paign and get it underway – PLEASE email me if you can help!

THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!!

From the Rabbis’ Study

This month, I will have the privilege of accompanying our 11th and 12th grade students, lead by Director of Youth Engagement Erica Shulman, on a four-day educational tour of our nation’s “deep South.” We will begin in Atlanta, then travel through Ala-bama to Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma to learn in-situ about the Civil Rights movement. We will visit the headquarters of the Southern

Poverty Law Center, walk the Edmund Pettis Bridge with locals who participated in the original Selma-Montgomery Freedom March, visit the Rosa Parks Museum, and attend Sunday services at Ebenezer Baptist Church where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once preached . . . and that’s only some of what we will experience!

This trip is part of Hebrew High’s multi-year travel program, in which students travel to Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC, and now Georgia/Alabama in order to learn about the Jewish role in the development of that particular place and its most important historical events. In Philadel-phia, students learn about the role of Jewish communities in the founding of our nation, and in New York, they learn about the waves of Jewish immigration that shaped the city we now know and love. In Washington, we learn about the Jew-ish imperative to stand up for the rights of the less fortunate and lobby our Congresspeople on Capitol Hill. This trip to the South represents the fourth and fi nal installment of this in-credible travel program, and will aff ord students the opportu-nity to learn not only about the Civil Rights Movement itself, but also about the important Jewish role in the movement through fi gures like Leo Frank and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

I am tremendously proud that our high school students leave their time in Hebrew High with a broader perspective of the Jewish impact on American history, and a clear understand-ing that our work is not yet fi nished. Yes, we raise our stu-dents to be mensches, but we also want them to understand that being a mensch means more than just being nice; it also means raising their voices on issues that matter, following in our prophetic tradition to demand justice and equality for those who are most vulnerable in our society.

When we return from this trip, several students will share their experiences during services on Friday, February 9th, at 6:00pm. I hope you’ll consider joining us that evening to learn from our teens about what is sure to be a deeply mean-ingful experience.

B’Yedidut,

Dear Friends,

This weekend I drove to Bos-ton to visit my father in the care facility in which he now resides. My sister Martha lives just a few miles away and visits him every day. When I drove up to Martha’s home, I was not surprised to fi nd a lawn sign stating “Hate Has No Home Here.” It had, however, been blown over in a recent storm and was now sitting on its side. Seeing it laying there struck me as a powerful reminder of just how easily that message can be lost.

We then went over to visit my father. As we walked through the facility, Martha not only knew every resident and caregiver by name but she also paused for a mo-ment to inquire as to the wellbeing of each. I could see how much it meant to each of them that she took the time to express her interest in them. The kindness, care, and compassion she displayed was likewise a powerful reminder to me. In this case, it showed that even when a sign of love is knocked over, without too much eff ort it can be lifted high once again.

This, in turn, made me think of the prophet Moses.

Ask most school children if Moses possessed any unique attributes and you will likely be told that he had a stut-ter. The Torah, however, simply indicates that Moses was “aral sfatayyim,” that he had “uncircumcised lips.” The phrase aral sfatayyim tells us that his speech was in some way “covered over” but it does not specifi cally say he stuttered. He might just as easily have had a fear of speaking in public or was, as I was as a child, unable to pronounce the letter “S.”

Elsewhere in the Torah a similar phrase, “ aral lev,” is used. It translates to “uncircumcised heart” and suggests a heart which is covered over, hardened and callous. It speaks to someone who lacks compassion. It is not a compliment.

I see far too many examples of this in our world today.

Time and time again, the Torah reminds us of the need to balance the rule of law with compassion. The rule of law is important. But compassion is too. And I still believe there can be a balance between the two. That, I believe, is one of the great lessons of Judaism. At a time that feels increasingly callous, the response can only be to redou-ble our acts of kindness and love.

We got back to my sister’s house after visiting my father, brushed off the sign and put it back in its place. Because, at my sister’s house, Hate Has No Home. That should be the case anywhere we go.

We are going to have the pleasure of welcoming world-renowned Jewish artist-educator Hanoch Piven on Sunday, February 4, for a workshop with our fi fth graders and their parents. Through our community shaliach, Michael Levi, we are partnering with several organizations to bring this experi-ence to TSTI. We are very grateful to Jewish Federation of Greater Metrowest, Camp Harlam, and World Zionist Organi-zation for their partnership.

The theme of the program is a family portrait, and we looking forward to seeing what our families produce. This is a perfect follow up experience to the My Family Story program our stu-dents took part in last year, where they explored their family roots through heirlooms and values.

Hanoch Piven is an Israeli artist who has gained recognition for his use of found objects to create portraits. Through his programs, he helps people see the world diff erently, to view the world around themselves and their surroundings with new eyes.

Throughout the last 15 years Piven has conducted work-shops for children and adults alike. The workshops allow participants to easily experience a creative process and en-ables introspection and communication through the creation of a collage with common objects.

The witty illustrations of Hanoch Piven have appeared in most major American magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and in many European pub-lications from The London Times to Der Spiegel and in Israel in the daily Haaretz.

Piven has lectured extensively about creativity and its ap-plication to various aspects of life in diverse platforms across the world, from Teach for All Global Conference to Tedx Conference in Jerusalem. See his website, wwwpivenworld.com for more info.

Do you have a pet? Cats and dogs, especially can give unconditional love. Many will snuggle with you when you are feeling sad or sick. They might

learn some tricks. They may do cute things that are complete-ly unexpected.

In TSTI’s preschool, we know how important it is for young children to learn about empathy. We give our students the opportunity to care for animals as well as for each other. We teach how to approach an animal, how to hold them, how to feed and how to clean up after them.

Currently we have Brownie the bunny, Esther the guinea pig, Angelina and Snowfl ake the pet mice, Marianne the 16 year old frog, Luca Brasi the goldfi sh, and the latest additions to TSTI’s animal kingdom, Stick Stickley and Stickbug McStick-ster, our stick bugs. To be honest, these stick bugs are not all that exciting compared to our fuzzy creatures or swimming ones. They basically never move, they don’t make any noise, and they aren’t particularly pretty to look at. They are WAY too delicate to be handled by a child so why is it that these little 2 inch insects are the most popular in our pet room right now? Is it because they are the newest acquisition in our menagerie? Is it because they are rarely seen in the wild? Is it because you don’t see their poop in the cage like we do with the bunny and guinea pig? Maybe they are popular because they don’t move quickly enough to scare anyone. Or perhaps because they rarely move at all, they are just easier to watch closely, especially with a magnifying glass. Maybe it’s not the bugs the children like after all, but rather they love using a new tool that makes the little bug seem enormous. Typically a large bug would frighten children and adults alike. Maybe there is something about having the control of making the stick bug appear larger than it is but only when the child controls when to do so. I’ve observed children look at the bug, then look through the magnifying glass at the same bug, move the magnifi er away from his eye, put it back again, and repeat this process over and over trying to make sense of the magic that has just occurred. Little, big, little, big, little, big.

Our little ones have very little power over much in their lives. They are told when to wake up, when to eat breakfast, what to wear, where to go to school, when to nap, etc. With so little control over their day to day routines, no wonder children like to pretend to be superheroes. In their pretend play they can rule the world, take risks, and feel big and powerful. They can do what they want, when they want. Even make little stick bugs look enormous. How exciting it must feel to have that kind of power.

The President’s Point of View

(cont. on page 2)

I want to thank our High Holy Days Appeal donors for their generosity. We are thrilled that we surpassed

our goal! (Of course if you meant to donate and forgot, we will happily include your donation; every single dollar is important!)

To date, we’ve had 345 donors this year totaling $278,804. Budget was $275,000.

I wanted to share some interesting details about our do-nors (typical of recent years) and thank each of you!

~ Many, many people give year after year and often increase their donation a bit each year. This is a major reason we are able to remain successful even though our overall temple membership count is trending downward. THANK YOU!

~ We had many new donors this year…THANK YOU!

~ I am particularly heartened that some of our families who receive assistance with their annual dues, choose to donate what they can as their year ends. What a genuine way to say thank you to the place that makes it possible for them to enjoy temple membership all year. THANK YOU!

~ We have families who previously received assistance with dues, who now pay full dues as their fi nancial situa-tions improved. A number of these families are pleased to donate and help today’s families who receive dues as-sistance. This is what a supportive community is about! THANK YOU!

~ Many of our senior staff , offi ce staff and clergy make donations to this campaign. This layer of dedication to our congregation is a shining example of the appreciative environment created on many levels of our community. THANK YOU!

~ Many of our Florida snowbirds and other out-of state residents donate year after year. Although they don’t live locally at all or perhaps even part-time, this group is a con-sistent and critical support to TSTI. We are so blessed with people who are passionate about TSTI’s future. THANK YOU!

It’s Purim time again.

This is always a fun time. We get together. We sing silly songs. We get dressed up. We eat a few too many hamen-taschen. A good time is had by all.

For the past few years we have also gathered just before Purim as an adult community to learn a little bit more about the real story of Purim. What’s the real story? Come and fi nd out.

There is a time and a place for everything and when we are young it’s important that we celebrate this as a story of good triumphing over evil. It’s ok that we learn that Esther won the crown in a beauty contest. We learn to love the story and then as we are able to understand it better we learn more about it. That’s one of the reasons we read the same texts over and over again, year after year. The text stays the same, but we change, and so does both what we see refl ected from the texts and what we seek from them.

This year we will seek a more adult, but still fun, refl ection of the text. This year:

Everything You Need to Know About Saying Kaddish

February 7 at 7:00pmInstructor Rabbi KleinWhy does Kaddish, the mourners’ prayer, have nothing to do with death? How often are we supposed to say it after a loved one dies, and should we say it at all if we aren’t personally in mourning? Why is the Hebrew of the prayer so diffi cult, and how is it diff erent than other prayers we say when we pray together? If you’ve ever wondered about any of these questions, or if you’ve struggled to recite the Hebrew or connect to this prayer, then this class is for you! We will review the prayer itself, and work to understand it’s origins, meaning, and its place in the context of Jew-ish mourning rituals. PrimeConnection Warms the Winter

Approximately 50 stalwart souls braved the snow to attend the Friday, December 15, Hanukkah dinner, so let’s hope the weather holds off for our February event, a Chinese New Year dinner celebration, chaired by Bobbe Futterman, to be held at the China Chalet in Florham Park on Thursday, February 22. Evites will follow.

For those who receive the Bulletin early, Richard Koch will hold his photography class on Thursday, February 1 at 1:00 pm in the Mansion . Bring your camera.

Let’s gather together this spring for a second night Passover seder to be held Saturday, March 31, at temple with Rabbi Cohen leading the service. Matty Goldberg and Ann Merin are chairing this event and will welcome help.

Hold the date for our spring bash, Trattoria 432 at Club Prime-Connection, to be held in the ballroom on Saturday evening April 28, with Ellen and Irv Barocas chairing…and looking for a few other chairs to pitch in for this highly anticipated night.

Celebrating Passover at your home and have a seat or two available at your seder table? We’d like to pair you with a Temple member who would enjoy home hospitality. Can you host? Are you looking for a seder? Contact: Pam Rodman-Paro, 973-699-4022.

At Menorah Chapels, we’ve been serving the Jewish community for over forty years... and we will continue to serve with honesty, integrity and dignity for many years to come. We are the only strictly Jewish funeral home in Union County that maintains its own building and

are not affiliated with any other funeral home.

We were here for you yesterday... we are here for you today, and we will be here for you tomorrow.

Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.
